On May 18, 2008, The Kurt Henry Band released its newest CD, Heart, Mind & All, produced by Eric Parker, also the band’s drummer – a fact that helps to explain the tight and varied rhythmic textures that make this a “must have.” Besides Parker, who has performed with Steve Winwood and Joe Cocker, among others, Heart, Mind & All has a great line up of musicians. David Sancious (Sting, East Street Band, Bruce Springsteen) plays piano and B-3. Harvey Kaiser (Sonny Stitt) is the saxophonist, and Larry Packer (Lou Reed, Hall and Oates, Phoebe Snow) plays violin and mandolin. Larry Balestra, former jazz band teacher, adds additional percussion. On bass is the mainstay of the band, Alan Groth, who first hooked up with Kurt during the 70s in the Womblers. Cheryl Lambert, singer, percussionist and harmonicist, has been performing in the band for five years. Of course, Kurt is the guitarist, lead vocalist and harmonicat.Listening to Heart, Mind & All, it’s immediately apparent why the selection of Eric Parker mattered so completely to an artist who has been known as a songwriter. This CD is as much about rhythm as it is about words, melody, harmony and counterpoint. Over the course of their five years of barstorming, Kurt has hammered out his philosophy that the principal task of the melodic players is to accompany the drums. The strength of the rhythm only accentuates Kurt’s melodic and lyrical song style. Percussionist Larry Balestra and bassman Albee Groth help Parker brew the glue that holds together a collection of songs so diversely appealing that any label seems reductive. This band is out to prove that audiences are just as eclectic as the majority of musicians, and if the music sounds good it doesn’t matter if it contains elements as varied as R&B, Caribbean, country-rock, jazz fusion, alternative rock and even English folk fusion. A great CD is for repeated listening and life time enjoyment.
