Founder of the Alternative Guitar Summit—hailed by Pat Metheny as a premier forum for innovative guitar music—Harrison also composes for chamber ensembles and film. His project Free Country reimagines country and Appalachian music through jazz, connecting African, African American, and Eurocentric traditions in a sound called “the most singular vision you’ll hear all year” (London Times). Drawing from fiddle tunes, spirituals, and classics by Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, Harrison uses these pieces as launching pads for improvisation, expanding jazz’s boundaries across three albums released over 22 years.
