Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online and on the radio, NY   See Map
Jessica Smucker believes that the best way to change the world is to channel our pain into connection. Her songs have a way of reaching deeply into people’s souls and inviting the kind of reflection that feels both reassuring and unsettling. Wrapped in catchy melodies, her lyrics appear simple on the surface, but each listen will uncover more hidden pockets of nuance. She’s the kind of writer and performer who can lull a noisy room into a hush with a single line.

Based in Lancaster, PA, Jessica was raised in the Mennonite faith tradition by a family full of storytellers, activists, adventurers, and pranksters. She performs regularly throughout the U.S and has won national songwriting contests like SolarFest’s Singer/Songwriter Showcase Competition and the Connecticut Folk Festival Song Competition. In her life beyond music, Jessica is a published poet, a social justice warrior, a freakishly good Scrabble player, and mother to two of the smartest people she’s ever met in real life!

Jazz
Emelin Theatre
153 Library Lane
Mamaroneck, NY   See Map
Improvisation is not just a technique for Grammy nominated artist Cyrille Aimée, it’s a way of life. The acclaimed vocalist ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from sneaking out to sing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by The New York Times. Among countless accolades, Aimée won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. As an actress, Aimée co-starred with Bernadette Peters in a Stephen Sondheim tribute at New York’s City Center which inspired her to dig deeper into Sondheim’s repertoire, resulting in her fourth and most recent album, Move On: A Sondheim Adventure. She’s shared her story via master classes, a TEDx talk, and a few addresses at the Conference on World Affairs.

Classical/Opera, Instrumental, and Contemporary
Howland Cultural Center
477 Main St.
Beacon, NY   See Map
Join us for this exciting and varied program in the unique and stunning Howland Cultural Center! Led by conductor and music director David Rudge, we open with two works by American composers: Arthur Foote's soulful Air, and Jessie Montgomery’s Strum which draws on the characteristic strumming of string instruments and, she writes, “salutes American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement." Next we feature concert pianist Sandro Russo, a recording artist who has toured internationally to rave reviews, as soloist in Liszt’s highly dramatic Malédiction for piano and string orchestra. We end with Tchaikovsky’s lush Serenade for Strings, a work that runs the gamut stylistically and expressively. It begins with a homage to Mozart, flows into a lilting waltz, offers a melancholy elegy at the heart of the work, and comes to a rousing and dance-like conclusion. Expect the unexpected!
