"Make it Funky at 50" Celebrating the 1971-1974 Era of the Godfather of Soul with Fred Thomas of the J.B.’s
and Special Guest, legendary drummer - Bernard Purdie - the "funkiest soul beat" in the business, who has consistently anchored sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones with equal ease.

VIDEO: James Brown's Bassist, Fred Thomas: https://youtu.be/bVwlMtTUezM

Fred Thomas
https://www.facebook.com/FredThomasoftheJBs/

Fred Thomas occupies a special niche in the history R&B. As James Brown’s principal bassist since 1971 (the “Make if Funky” era), Fred participated in one the most prolific periods in the Godfather of Soul’s incredible career as a member of Brown’s band, the J.B.'s.

Fred can be heard on No. 1 R&B singles “Make it Funky”, “Hot Pants”, “Get on the Good Foot” and the Top 10 R&B singles “I’m a Greedy Man”, “There It Is”, and “Honkey Tonk“. He’s on the all-time classics “Papa Don’t Take No Mess”, "Doing it to Death (Funky Good Time)”, "I Got Ants in My Pants”, "Stoned to the Bone” and instrumental classics like “Pass the Peas” and “Gimme Some More”. Fred’s bass lines are heard on some of the most sampled songs of all time, including Bobby Byrd's "I Know You Got Soul" and Lyn Collin's "Think”.

Principle Members of The JBs ~

Fred Thomas / Bass, Vocals
Gabriel Caplan / Guitar (Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens)
Tyrone Cox / Trumpet, Vocals (Crown Heights Affair)
Kaori Kiki Nakajima / Tenor Sax (in Japan - Ben E. King, The Stylistics, Three Degrees)
Jackie Coleman / Trumpet (Antibalas)
Geoff Burke / Alto Sax (Harry Connick Jr. Band)
Ramsey Jones / Drums (GZA Liquid Swords)
Kevin Razcka / Drums (Antibalas)

Bernard Purdie

Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies. Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete; it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. A native of Elkton, Maryland - Purdie has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date.

ACCEPT ARE BACK!

The German kingpins of heavy metal will release their new, eagely-awaited studio album via Nuclear Blast on January 15th 2021. The ingenious title of the masterpiece is “Too Mean To Die”. Speaking of heavy metal kingpins, when ACCEPT first launched at the end of the 70s, the metal genre didn’t even exist – at first the band could only be labelled with the (quality) seal “crazy loud and crazy wild”. Today we know that this was (and is) metal par excellence. And we also know that ACCEPT opened the door to thrash metal, inspiring giants such as Metallica. Guitarist Kirk Hammett recently stated in the German magazine “Gitarre & Bass”: “Wolf Hoffmann has a huge influence on me.“ ACCEPT, who once had their origins in the city of Solingen, a city of sound, have been a worldwide music phenomenon for more than 40 years. They still impress with razor-sharp guitar licks and a steel-hard sound.

"Gangway" symbolizes of the start of an adventure; the first and last thing you see before you embark, and disembark during any journey. The concept was heavily inspired by Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" and Wayne Shorter's "Adventures Abroad the Golden Mean". The free open nature of "Gangway" takes on many shapes, and as a result, it will never sound the same, twice. Roney's intention for this piece is for it to be listened to while you're going somewhere you've never been before.

Music has always been a part of Wallace’s family pedigree. His father was world-renowned trumpeter Wallace Roney Sr. His mother - universally acclaimed pianist Geri Allen.

Growing up in a household full of music, it wasn’t long before Wallace took a serious interest in playing the trumpet. His idols included trumpet giants such as Kenny Dorham, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan, etc. At age 10 after showing enormous interest in playing, and a willingness to study harmony, his father gifted him his very own horn.

Since then, Wallace has shared the bandstand and garnered the approval of many legends the likes of which include Chick Corea, Jimmy Heath, Charles Tolliver, Lenny White, Buster Williams, Jack DeJohnette, and the late great Ornette Coleman just to name a few. Wallace, a graduate of the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of music, continues to play in numerous venues and performance spaces across the U.S and internationally, and remains a sought after trumpeter in the New York/New Jersey area.

Sony Legacy and Real Gone Music release ‘The Essential Eric Andersen’. Andersen’s songs have been interpreted by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, The Grateful Dead, Gillian Welch, Pete Seeger, Fairport Convention, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Eilen Jewell.

Eric Andersen
http://ericandersen.com/

Eric Andersen is widely regarded as one of the most poetic songwriters to spring from the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960’s - a multifaceted, complex and singularly driven artist whose early career saw great expectations waylaid by misfortune.

As a musician, he defies categorization. His artful mélange of love, despair, hope and stirring memory has earned him a passionate international following and the respect and admiration of artists ranging from Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen to Lou Reed and Wyclef Jean.

For Andersen, every big break seemed to be followed by crushing disappointment. The premature death in 1967 of his newly acquired manager, legendary Beatles’ mastermind Brian Epstein, took its toll. Six years later, one of the most baffling events in the history of contemporary music occurred—a career-changer that still haunts Eric from the shadows. In 1973, during a corporate shakeup at Columbia records, 40 master recording tapes for a highly anticipated release mysteriously and inexplicably disappeared. Never before or after has a record company lost a complete album. Although the tapes resurfaced 16 years later, his career had been forever altered by the event—no plausible explanation has ever been given.

A remastered two CD set has been made available, containing Andersen's BLUE RIVER his 1972 CBS debut produced by Norbert Putnam, and STAGES (his 1973 "lost" album for Columbia). These recordings feature, among others, Leon Russell, Joan Baez and Dan Fogelberg.
