AMERICAN BALLAD (2022) is the new duo album from pianist Kevin Hays and drummer Bill Stewart. Largely improvised, the music was recorded over 2 days in Brooklyn in 2015 and remained unreleased, until now.
Listen: https://kevinhays.bandcamp.com/ https://kevinhays.com/ Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and singer/songwriter KEVIN HAYS, is internationally recognized as one of the most original and compelling musicians of his generation. Kevin has appeared on over 60 albums as a guest artist, recording with Chris Potter, Bill Stewart, Joshua Redman, Jeff Ballard, Nicholas Payton, and Al Foster, among others. Notable collaborations include a widely-acclaimed piano duo project with Brad Mehldau (Modern Music – Nonesuch), performances with James Taylor, Sonny Rollins, John Scofield, Joe Henderson, and Roy Haynes. In addition to his celebrated work as pianist and composer, Kevin has become increasingly known as a gifted and expressive singer/songwriter. In 2017 Hays joined the Steve Gadd Band. The group released their eponymous album which garnered a 2019 GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. He co-wrote several compositions with the other band members, and the album features Kevin’s own “Spring Song”, the sole vocal track. Hope (2019) his release, highlights the beauty of Kevin’s duets with Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke, who came to the world’s attention through his stellar work with Herbie Hancock. https://www.whirlwindrecordings.com/matt-brewer-double-bass/ MATT BREWER has worked with artists such as Greg Osby, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lee Konitz, David Sanchez, Terence Blanchard, Aaron Parks, Jeff “Tain” Watts, among others. He is featured on dozens of recordings, including two on the Blue Note record label. “Channel Three” by Greg Osby, and “Avatar” by Gonzalo Rubalcaba. https://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Al_Foster.html AL FOSTER , master drummer, has been a major innovator in the world of jazz for several decades. As a member of the Miles Davis band for thirteen years, Foster's contribution to Davis' music is articulated by Davis himself in his 1989 autobiography, Miles: The Autobiography, where Davis describes the first time he heard Foster play live... 'He [Foster] knocked me out because he had such a groove and he would just lay it right in there. That was the kind of thing I was looking for. AI could set it up for everybody else to play off and just keep the groove going forever."
Sunday 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm | Roxi Copland Singer-Songwriter, Americana, and Roots Music | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online and on the radio, NY See Map |
Roxi Copland forges her innovative sound at the crossroads of Americana, roots, and jazz. The Austin, TX-based, multi-award winning singer/songwriter's new EP 'I Come From Crazy' was called "Refreshingly honest" by Americana UK, and lauded by Americana Highways: "Has a real sassy swagger running through it...very well worth the listen". Throughout the EP, Copland’s sultry vocals are framed by country-tinged instrumentation from a stellar lineup of some of Austin’s finest. The resulting record - akin to a rowdier, rootsier Madeleine Peyroux or Melody Gardot - provides a perfect showcase for Copland’s unique strengths, her ability to play with tradition and give it her own stamp, one of equal parts confidence and wit, and one that will have you returning to I Come From Crazy again and again.

September 2–3, 7 PM. Philippe Quesne describes “Farm Fatale” as “a theater of postapocalyptic deceleration.” In a world laid waste by environmental collapse, human life has ceased. The sole survivors are five scarecrows, who embrace the roles of dreamers, poets, and activists in a quest for a kinder, less harmful future for the planet. The centerpiece of PATHWAYS 2022 programming, “Farm Fatale” introduces audiences and participants to new European theater in a rural, pristine setting. The work is a cautionary tale about one of the most pressing issues of today’s world.
As a comedic, dystopian pastorale exploring and commenting on the fragility and beauty of the earth’s ecosystem, Quesne’s “Farm Fatale” is a natural choice for PATHWAYS 2022: Blazing Trails to a Sustainable Future, PS21’s multi-disciplinary public initiative that features free performances, arts and environmental education workshops, circus and processional arts, participatory events, and installations. Saturday 7:00 pm | The Ed Palermo Big Band "Americana Returns!" | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
The world's zaniest big band returns to re-form the music of Zappa, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter...with comic diversions, because they can't help it!.
"Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk "[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world." – Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, and six-time Grammy Award winner "Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes palermobigband.com This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock. This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.” The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary. Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny. “I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.” Happy Together: https://youtu.be/0Ft46dKsqvo
