"The Deadliest Ed the world has ever known!"

VIDEO: Happy Together: https://youtu.be/0Ft46dKsqvo

The world's zaniest big band returns to re-form the music of Zappa, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, and more...with comic diversions, because they can't help it!
"Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk

"[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world."
– Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, and six-time Grammy Award winner

"Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes

https://www.palermobigband.com/

This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock.

This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.”

The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary.

Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny.

“I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.”

Folk-rock legends the Felice Brothers and singer/songwriter Skullcrusher to perform at the Paramount for the first time EVER on Saturday, August 6!
“The Felice Brothers, who began as New York City buskers, came to prominence during the late-Aughts folk-Americana boom ushered in by groups like the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons. But unlike many of their contemporaries, the band has, from its inception, prioritized self-definition over success, intentionally steering their career away from big-time opportunities… ‘All your favorite bands want to be in the Felice Brothers,’ Deer Tick guitarist Ian O’Neil recently wrote. ‘It’s time that the band get the credit that they and their music deserve.’” – Rolling Stone
“Skullcrusher is not a metal band, or an industrial band, or whatever other abrasive genre you’re probably thinking of. It’s the solo project of LA singer-songwriter Helen Ballentine.

Blending elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian “ethno-chaos” band DakhaBrakha—a quartet from Kyiv—creates a world of unexpected new music. Their name, “DakhaBrakha,” means “give/take” in Old Ukrainian, and reflects their resilience and philosophy. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music, the band added rhythms of the surrounding world to create the unique and original style that has become their hallmark. At PS21, DakhaBrakha will perform their original live accompaniment to Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s “Earth,” the 1930 Ukrainian silent masterpiece.

“The group mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures, often with the close harmonies usually associated with Balkan music. But it’s really the live shows that take DakhaBrakha beyond mere curiosity to utter brilliance.” — NPR

Ukrainian cinema begins with “Earth.” Dovzhenko, one of the pillars of the Soviet cinematic avant-garde alongside Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Dzig

Chris Beard is a world class modern Blues guitarist, with a unique and compelling voice. Using his dynamic combination assertive vocals and his exciting guitar. Following the 80’s model of Stevie Ray Vaughan which features a combination of traditional blues, high-energy guitar playing, and a contemporary edge, Chris Beard is able to traverse the recent blues past and propel his audience into the future.

When you grow up in a house filled with the blues, when your father grew up on Beale Street, when music was in your DNA, then blues is who you are and what you do. Chris's personal connections to the blues were forged with the living blues men he’s sat with since childhood. As the son of Joe Beard, the blues guitarist who grew up on Beale Street in the 1950’s, family friends like Matt “Guitar” Murphy and Buddy Guy stopped by, and young Chris became their willing pupil.

After years playing the clubs in and around Rochester NY, Chris was offered the opportunity to record. In 1998. He released his debut recording, Barwalkin’, on JSP Records. That record earned Beard a W.C. Handy nomination as Best New Blues Artist! In 2015 Chris released his album "Eye of the Witch".

Mississippi-born American blues and rhythm & blues musician, Joe Beard, the father of blues musician Chris Beard spent his youth surrounded by aspiring and veteran blues musicians. Matt "Guitar" Murphy and his brother Floyd Murphy were Beard's childhood buddies who got him started with blues guitar. In the mid-1950's Beard moved to Rochester, New York, and befriended Son House.

While visiting his brother in Chicago, he became enamored with the blues being played there and sat in with John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters.

Back in Rochester, he formed the Soul Brothers Six, playing bass and singing. Joe did not perform in public until 1965. From the '60s through the '80s, Joe gained a reputation as one of the best regional players in and around around Rochester and ultimately counted as one of the best nationally.

Guitar star Dylan Doyle delights audiences, but frustrates anyone trying to define his sound....It isn’t the 19-year-old’s job to define it. It’s his job to play it. And that’s what the Dylan Doyle Band will do..." - Wisconsin News

http://www.dylandoyleband.com/

Based in the Hudson Valley, rising star Dylan Doyle has been performing nationally, as well as internationally. Southern bred, northern raised, his trio’s style of music lies somewhere between roots rock and jam funk. It evokes Woodstock and dips into southern soul; a uniquely American sound.

Touring nationally since age 15, Dylan became a seasoned professional while relatively young. He has played with notable musicians such as, Rob Stoner (Bob Dylan, Don Mclean), John Platania (Van Morrison, Natalie Merchant), Ben Cauley (Otis Redding) and Bill Payne (Little Feat).

Stoner called Dylan one of the most prodigious players he has known, with abundant natural talent. John Platania has referred to Dylan as “The Future.” Ben Cauley, after playing with Dylan in Memphis said, “Dylan Doyle sounds like a young Jimi Hendrix.” In the words of Bill Payne upon sharing the stage, “Music is a conversation. Dylan spoke beautifully and was listening to the musicians around him. His play was imaginative and original.”

Attesting to Dylan’s versatility, Dylan has played the King Biscuit Blues Festival three consecutive years as well headlining the Grateful Garcia Gathering, the largest Grateful Dead festival in the Midwest. He consistently packs houses across Europe and the US.

The Bard Music Festival returns for its 32nd season with an exploration of the life and work of Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943), perhaps the last great exponent of Russian Romanticism, who nevertheless embodied many contradictions.

Through a series of themed concert programs, lectures, and panel discussions, Rachmaninoff and His World explores such themes as composition during the Cold War, virtuoso pianists and their public, and America’s ongoing love affair with Rachmaninoff’s music.

The full Bard Music Festival program will be announced in late April, complete with details of all health and safety protocols. Please note, this year, the Bard Music Festival semi-staged opera will be a part of the Weekend One program.
