VIDEO: Klezskalypso (Teach The Ska | Honoring The Skatalites): https://youtu.be/cfrtull7udI

https://www.klezmatics.com/

Since their emergence more than 30 years ago, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a “Jewish roots band,” the Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form.

On their Grammy-winning 2006 album Wonder Wheel, the Klezmatics set a dozen previously unsung Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, widening their stylistic base by largely diverging from klezmer. They have also recently served as the subject of a feature-length documentary film, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground.

They have collaborated with such brilliant artists as violinist Itzhak Perlman, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and Israeli vocal icon Chava Alberstein, plus many other prominent artists working within multiple genres.

The Klezmatics’ music is not a strictly traditional variety of the klezmer genre. Rather it is a comfortable hybrid that appeals equally to those with no previous exposure to the music and those already familiar with it.

Jeff Tain Watts
http://www.tainish.com/

Jeff Watts, the drummer they call "Tain," spent his formative years with Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and his compositional skills now command equal attention.

Jeff joined the Wynton Marsalis Quartet in 1981 and proceeded to win three Grammy Awards with the ensemble: Black Codes From The Underground, J Mood and Marsalis Standard Time. Watts left Wynton Marsalis in 1988. After working with George Benson, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner, he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1989, winning Grammy's for I Heard You Twice the First Time and Contemporary Jazz.

Watt's Travel Band released "Detained in Amsterdam", and Watts's Blue Vol.1, celebrates blues and ballads, with an overall dedication to Jeff's mother, Marie Lewis Watts, who passed away in 2012. The recordings showcase Tain’s compositional range while hinting at a future as producer with his own studio.

In the film and television industry Jeff has appeared as both a musician on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as an actor, Rhythm Jones in Spike Lee’s "Mo Better Blues". Jeff joined Kenny Garrett's band after returning to New York in 1995 and continued to record and tour with Branford Marsalis as well as Danilo Perez, Michael Brecker, Betty Carter, Kenny Kirkland, Courtney Pine, Geri Allen, Alice Coltrane, Greg Osby, McCoy Tyner, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Harry Connick Jr, and Ravi Coltrane.

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts

In a country that loves its Celtic music, it’s no surprise that Vancouver’s Pat Chessell has become known as one of the most exciting roots artists in Western Canada. Pat’s rootsy vocal style, charismatic stage presence and expert musicianship (guitar) are making for an ever-growing audience of enthusiastic fans. While his mostly original music falls solidly under the broad umbrella of ‘Celtic’, Pat’s range is prodigious and eclectic. It’s been variously described as straight-ahead “folk”, “upbeat Celtic influenced Canadian folk/pop”, and “moving mid-and-up-tempo contemporary Celtic”, among other labels. His tunes have also, on occasion, known to be tinged with Americana influences.
But, to cut to the chase, it’s all Pat’s music. Its music played and performed, and often written, in Pat’s distinctive and unique voice; strongly rooted in the Celtic tradition, but with an open-hearted connection to the place he calls home and the modern world around him.

Award-winning folk singer-songwriter duo Curtis & Loretta’s music comes straight
from the heart. With their extraordinary harmonies, insightful original songs, and
parade of stringed instruments, they were named “Best Acoustic Performers of the
Twin Cities” by City Pages. The Minneapolis couple’s latest recording is all
original songs of real-life unsung heroes.
“Known simply as Curtis & Loretta to most folks, the husband and wife duo of
Curtis Teague and Loretta Simonet has been making vital and lovely music
together for some three decades. With their brilliant, self-penned odes, these two
take music and give it space to hang out for you to enjoy. Accompanied by an
array of instruments including but not limited to Celtic harp, mandocello,
mandolin, guitars, clawhammer banjo and National steel ukulele, plus a touch of
kazoo, harmonica and shakers, they blend humor and realism in a poignant
performance of super-duper stuff.” ... Tom Irwin, Illinois Time

What if the family narrative that shapes us is a lie? “Three Decembers” tells the story of aging Broadway star Madeline Mitchell and her two adult children as they struggle to connect and heal old wounds while family secrets are revealed. This intimate, compelling drama takes place over two decades during the AIDS crisis, and has been hailed by critics as a modern masterpiece.

The one act “Three Decembers” takes a deep look at the meaning of connection in the contemporary American family through the story of Broadway star Madeline Mitchell and her children. Stage Director Beth Greenberg, renowned for her work at the New York City Opera, says of the opera: “Buried secrets…dark whispers…love, and devastating loss…all collide and burst forth in “Three Decembers.” With its skillful balance of drama and èlan, the work probes the fraught relationships between a successful actress-mother and her two children at the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic.”

"You Never Know is a wide ranging romp, full of ....peerless musicianship inspired by music from India and Morocco as well as the maverick jazz of Miles Davis and Frank Zappa." - Banning Eyre, Afropop Worldwide

“Crushed between the borders of Morocco, jam band land and the kingdom of avant-garde jazz lies Club d’Elf...James Brown-meets-Sun-Ra.” – Jed Gottlieb, Boston Herald

"....the lovechild of Pink Floyd and George Clinton, dropped in Marrakesh...deeply psychedelic...." - WNYC.

The band's new album, 'You Never Know', offers gnawa refracted through a prism of contemporary psychedelia—Morocco turned technicolor. The record unfurls upon kaleidoscopic clouds of spiced smoke, shifting from chopped dub-jazz through trance epics that reimagine Boston as a city of bazaars.

Club d'Elf pay tribute to the music and musicians who have been primary influences, with half the album being covers of gnawa, Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Moroccan band Nass el-Ghiwane, and Frank Zappa. The other half consists of original music inspired by Rivard's personal journey into darkness following a near death experience in the remote jungle of the Peruvian Amazon.

Each Club d'Elf performance features a different line-up, drawn from a constellation of some of the most creative improvisers from the jazz, DJ, rock & world music scenes of Boston, NYC and beyond. The band's music draws from a startlingly wide spectrum of styles, including jazz, hip hop, electronica, avant garde, prog-rock and dub.

A Night at the Opera with Stephanie Blythe & Laquita Mitchell
Classical/Opera
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts

Katonah, NY   See Map
On Site Opera presents an evening of operatic comedy and tragedy featuring international star Stephanie Blythe. In Lesson Plan, Blythe stars as an acclaimed opera diva who thinks she will be teaching a master class with trained singers at a prestigious conservatory. Instead, due to a scheduling faux pas, she takes the stage for a group of liberal arts students at a community college — a group with little singing experience or interest in what the great diva has in mind. Intercepted by an overwhelmed school administrator (Laquita Mitchell) with a side hustle as an amateur choir director, the pair clash over teaching technique, singing, and the true meaning of art. In the second half of the program, Blythe reprises her acclaimed tenor debut in the role of Don José in excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen, joined by Mitchell and Maya Lahyani for a thrilling program of arias and duets from this timeless opera arranged for two piano accompaniment.
