Live Jazz Music with Big Yellow Taxi from 12 noon.
A Delicious Jazz Brunch
Craft Beers, Summer Spritzers, Fresh Lemonade and more!

Jean-Michel Pilc ~ Piano

Ari Hoenig ~ Drums

Jean-Michel Pilc
http://www.jeanmichelpilc.com/

Mr Pilc seems to have dropped from the sky fully formed, with technique and his ideas in place. He is a physical and densely harmonic player, a splashy stunner who also has a Rubik's-cube mind for chord substitutions." - Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

Jean-Michel has signed with Jusitin Time Records and, notably, released his EP VISIONS (2021):

https://open.spotify.com/album/4u5UdwIFe3KOGsYOAj6S5C

François Moutin
https://www.moutin.com/Francois.html

François Moutin's bass chops are practically unparalleled; his facility in the highest register allows him to double melodies and sound almost like a guitar. - All Music Guide Expert Review

Ari Hoenig
WWW.ARIHOENIG.COM

"Ari Hoenig is one of the most maniacally obsessive, spasmodic and musical drummers in jazz." - JAZZ TIMES

Hoenig is known for his unique ability to modify the pitch of a drum, using drumsticks, mallets, and even parts of his body. He can play any note in the chromatic scale, virtually any melody, and even improvise on a chord structure in the same way as any other instrumentalist would.

Since meeting at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1991, Viator & Maxey have been on a musical journey through the clubs and venues of Austin and around Texas, through the Rocky Mountains, the American West, and Louisiana. Drawing from their divergent backgrounds – for Mark, the rhythms of his Cajun origins, country blues, the singer-songwriters, and for Susan, classic country twang and Texas songwriters – they have developed a sound that is roots driven and original. They incubated their approach by playing and singing with such Austin artists as Jim Stringer, Slaid Cleaves, Jane Gillman, Steven Fromholz, Bobby Bridger, and many others, developing their craft and paying their dues.

“Imagine if Hank Williams had mutated into Captain Beefheart, acquiring a bunch of primitive electronic equipment along the way, and you’ll get some idea of where Johnny Dowd is at... Gloriously deviant.“ - The Independent (London)

Johnny Dowd
http://www.johnnydowd.com/

“Dowd has made a career of making music full of piercingly bleak, hard fought, gnarled dreamscapes that make David Lynch’s tales seem like those of a choir boy. But just when I thought I had him figured out, Dowd delivers a blues record so beautiful that I cannot stop playing it. It is also full of demons that live on a merry-go-round with feedback and distortion taking the places of the painted ponies going up and down. Paradoxically, it’s his most accessible music in quite a while, maybe ever.” - No Depression (US)

This is a man clearly in charge of his musical vision, and that vision includes a broad grasp of rock’s so-called rich tapestry. Dowd ekes out noir-ish psychedelic blues, takes old surf riffs and slows 'em down to a funeral procession trudge, and yelps his way through "trashabilly".

Johnny Dowd is an American alternative country musician from Ithaca, New York. There's a strong undercurrent of black humor and the absurd in his work. His song-style style comprises experimental, noisy breaks and strong gothic elements, lyrically and instrumentally.

There’s something uniquely fun about Amy LaVere, even when she’s breaking your heart.

Amy LaVere
https://www.amylavere.com/epk/

Well known among songwriters and critics alike. NPR’s Robert Siegel says she “specializes in lyrics that are more barbed than her sweet soprano prepares you for.” Her growing catalogue of material and steady critical acclaim suggest a first-tier presence on the Americana and indie-folk/punk circuits. Her latest album Painting Blue comes out August 16th on Nine Mile Records (Glorietta, David Wax Museum, Carson McHone, Patrick Sweany, Greyhounds).

Amy’s live performances are anything but predictable. She might appear on stage with a full band, sporting a mask and pink wig, or simply be a natural in blue jeans and sandals, but her upright bass and clever song delivery are constants. Her voice is at once the bully and the victim.

Music fans first discovered this “sweet soprano” on This World is Not My Home in 2005, but it was her Jim Dickinson-produced breakout album Anchors & Anvils two years later that put Amy LaVere on the map. Stranger Me, the 2011 release on Archer Records, was called “the break-up album of the year” by Spin. Paste said it was “among the year’s best,” and it earned a first listen feature from NPR’s All Things Considered.
She followed it in 2014 with another critical smash: Runaway’s Diary, a concept album based on her own experience as a teenage runaway, produced by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars). American Songwriter called it “boundary pushing… heartfelt, reflective, challenging and consistently compelling.” NPR Music’s Robert Christgau said it was her best yet. Of Hallelujah I’m A Dreamer (Archer Records, 2015) No Depression said simply: “pure bliss.”

Painting Blue, produced by her husband Will Sexton, captures perfectly the moment that Amy is in. Will Sexton’s masterful production and Amy’s soft, clarinet-like vocal pour over you, pushing and pulling, stirring and calming. As we’ve come to expect, this record is honest, revealing and sounds uniquely like no one else.

Witness one of foremost instrumental trios of our times. Constantly seeking untapped musical terrain, New York-based guitarist and composer Oz Noy steps onto fertile ground, with Haslip (Yellowjackets, Jeff Lorber Fusion) and Chambers (Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic).

Video: Concert Medley: https://youtu.be/RyloGyhg88U

Oz Noy
https://www.oznoy.com/

The impact of Oz's unique, intoxicating style - jazz, funk, rock, blues, and r&b - has broken the rules of instrumental guitar by focusing on the groove. All-stars such as Keith Carlock, Anton Fig, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl often contribute on drums, with bassists Will Lee, James Genus, and Reggie Washington.
Oz won the highly acclaimed Guitar Player magazine readers poll for “best guitar riff on a record” in 2007, and Guitar Player’s 2008 “best new talent.” Noy has performed, toured and recorded with Chris Botti, Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper, Clay Aiken, Toni Braxton, Phoebe Snow, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Dave Weckl, Mike Manieri, The East Village Opera Company, Roger Glover, Bill Evans, Warren Hayes, Gov’t Mule, and Allen Toussaint, among others.

Jimmy Haslip
https://jimmyhaslipbass.com/

In 1975, Haslip began touring and recording with many different popular artists. In 1978 he met guitarist Robben Ford and keyboardist Russell Ferrante and formed a group to record Robben's first solo recording on Electra-Asylum. This critically acclaimed album, called " The Inside Story" became a landmark recording. This led to the formation of The Yellowjackets who recorded their debut album for Warners Bros. Records in 1980. Two time Grammy winners, The Yellowjackets, have been nominated for seventeen Grammys! Jimmy was also nominated for an Edison award in 2000, and another Grammy nomination, his 18th, for the Jeff Lorber Fusion “NOW IS THE TIME” recording, which he co-produced.

Dennis Chambers
https://www.dennischambers.com/

Chambers - well known for his technique and speed - has recorded and performed with John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, Niacin, Mike Stern, CAB, Greg Howe, and many others. Chambers is well-regarded for his ability to play "in the pocket" but can also stretch very far out of the pocket - a hallmark of his technique. Technically proficient, yet highly musical and groove-oriented in a wide variety of musical genres, but most notable for his jazz-fusion, funk, and Latin music playing.

“Eldorado Slim” is a a six-piece ensemble exploring early 1970s soul-jazz, acid funk and space spirituals!

FEATURING ~

-Scott Sharrard ~ (Little Feat, Greg Allman Band)
-Pat Bianchi ~ Hammond B3 Organ (Lou Donaldson, Pat Martino)
-Clark Gayton ~ Trombone (Springsteen, Wrecking Ball Tour)
-Craig Dreyer ~ Saxophones (Keith Richards, Joan Osborne)
-Fred Walcott ~ Percussion (Buster Poindexter, Shemekia Copeland)
-Tony Leone ~ Drums (Little Feat, Chris Robinson Brotherhood)

Where Bill Graham’s Fillmore East meets Detroit’s Club Mozambique you will find the sounds of NYC’s newest band, Eldorado Slim. Led by Little Feat Guitarist Scott Sharrard, the 6 piece lineup consists of some of New York City’s finest musicians. The band takes its name from an obscure Little Feat jam from the early 1970s.

Sharrard describes Eldorado Slim’s mix of 1970s instrumental covers as a blend of “acid funk and space spirituals”. The band takes their sound and repertoire from one of the richest chapters in American roots music history. Inspired by the consciousness expanding and hypnotic, improvisational funk of the era, music by artists like Grant Green, Eddie Harris, Lonnie Smith, The Crusaders, Cannonball Adderley, King Curtis, Chico Hamilton and Stuff. Eldorado Slim also nods to Scott Sharrard's work with Gregg Allman and Little Feat by occasionally doing their own instrumental interpretations and arrangements of tunes from those iconic rock and roll songbooks.

Scott Sharrard
https://www.scottsharrard.com/

Scott Sharrard is not only a member of Little Feat (since 2019) but was also the guitarist, musical director and Grammy nominated songwriter and producer for the Gregg Allman band (from 2008 until Greggs passing in 2017). Scott has been nominated for two Grammys and has released 6 solo albums under his own name as a singer/songwriter.

Along with Sharrard’s distinct blues inflected soul guitar style, Eldorado Slim’s instrumentation is propelled forward by Latin percussion, Hammond B-3 organ, drums and a horn section. The musical stew the band creates weaves between acid jazz and acid rock, with a constant grasp on the relentless pulse of rhythm & blues and some occasional post bop improvisation. In the chaos of our modern times, Eldorado Slim harkens back to a groovier time and an analog solution.

In the words of the great Maceo Parker, the band plays “2% jazz and 98% funky stuff.”

FINDING NORTH brings to life the powerful stories of the sacrifices and dreams of John P. Parker, a former enslaved man who helped fugitive enslaved people escape through the Underground Railroad in southern Ohio. Drawn from historical research, Parker’s tale is woven together with verbatim interviews and oral histories from contemporary community members who tell their stories of searching for haven in modern-day America. A timely and provocative contribution to the national conversation about prejudice, privilege, and human rights, the play is both an exploration and celebration of the continuing quest for justice and freedom in America.

Originally written by David Gonzalez and commissioned by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to celebrate the opening of Cincinnati’s Underground Railroad Freedom Center, FINDING NORTH is being revisited and updated through the collaboration of David Gonzalez with performer/director Daniel Carlton.

Based in New York’s Catskill Mountains, Ungar and Mason are best known for their work on the soundtrack of Ken Burns’s PBS documentary series, The Civil War. Ungar’s composition Ashokan Farewell became the musical centerpiece of the Grammy-winning soundtrack and was nominated for an Emmy. His fiddling is known for playfulness, drama, soul, and technical verve, as he explores many musical styles and idioms that he has internalized and made his own. Mason’s inventiveness on piano and guitar supports the tunes and follows the flow of the melody. Her rich and expressive vocals round out the experience of their award-winning concert presentations. Together they have recorded numerous albums of traditional and original fiddle music along with vintage country and jazz.
