New Production
by Ernest Chausson The American Symphony Orchestra Conducted by Leon Botstein Directed by Louisa Proske Idealism, treachery, honor, and perfidy collide in this richly lyrical opera by French composer Ernest Chausson. This opulently scored work, which premiered in 1903, lays bare the tragedy of King Arthur’s betrayal at the hands of his queen Guinevere and his trusted knight Lancelot. Considered one of the finest examples of French romanticism, King Arthur (Le roi Arthus) was composer Chausson’s only opera—his own composing career was tragically cut short by his early death at age 44. Performed by a stellar cast, helmed by baritone Norman Garrett and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, this production of King Arthur takes us to a world in the midst of upheaval where long-standing codes of honor and loyalty no longer hold sway. Sunday 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm | Big Lazy | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
Big Lazy’s Guitar Noir sound can be heard in numerous films/TV series.
"Big Lazy, the elegantly gritty instrumental trio led by the extraordinary guitarist Stephen Ulrich, plays stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers' romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Herrmann." -The New Yorker “Avant twang, Americana noir, garage chamber music,...one thing is undeniable — the vibe is unforgettable.” -Dusty Wright, Culture Catch “This band has sonic gravitas… just the real sound of a band with chops, intelligence and a sense of humor.” -Sara Willis, Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) "The Big Apple Crème de la Crème." -Robert Christgau http://www.biglazymusic.com/ Big Lazy has flourished for over two decades in New York’s downtown music scene, playing their singular brand of noir and twang from dive bars to the The Whitney Museum of American Art. Big Lazy founder Stephen Ulrich is the composer for the HBO series Bored to Death and the art forgery documentary Art and Craft. Simultaneously noir and pastoral, gothic and modern, Big Lazy’s music conjures images from big sky country to seedy back rooms with deftness and a cinematic clarity. With sparse instrumentation - electric guitar, acoustic bass and drums - the trio forges American music from archetypes in Blues, Jazz, Surf, and Rockabilly. Their new album Dear Trouble features NYC luminaries Marc Ribot, Steven Bernstein, Peter Hess (Philip Glass ensemble) and Marlysse Rose Simmons (Miramar). With a nod toward classic guitar instrumentals, the new album captures the essence of the trio’s legendary live shows.
Sunday 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm | Amy Speace Singer-Songwriter, Americana | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online and on the radio, NY See Map |
Heralded by Rolling Stone and Billboard Magazine, Amy Speace’s newest release “There Used To Be Horses Here” has received widespread critical acclaim. Performing Songwriter gave it 5 out of 5 stars and Americana UK writes “a remarkable display of songcraft.” Beautifully uplifting and deeply personal, the album sets Speace’s majestic voice to symphonic arrangements, yet her songwriting remains intimate and emotional. She began her career in the iconic folk venues of New York City where she was discovered by Judy Collins and signed to her Wildflower Records label. Moving to Nashville in 2009, she has become one of Contemporary Folk’s leading voices. In 2020, “Me and the Ghost of Charlemagne” was named International Song of the Year by the Americana Music Association UK. Her songs have been recorded by Judy Collins, Red Molly, Memphis Blues Hall of Famer Sid Selvidge and others. She has also written essays that appeared in The New York Times, American Songwriter, The Blue Rock Review.

The Falcon Main Stage | No Tickets | No Cover | Donations Encouraged | Reservations Recommended
The world's zaniest big band presents its "mimi me" version, and re-forms the music of Zappa, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter...with comic diversions, because they can't help it!. "Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk "[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world." – Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, composer, arranger, and six-time Grammy Award winner "Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes palermobigband.com This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock. This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.” The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary. Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny. “I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.” Happy Together: https://youtu.be/0Ft46dKsqvo
