FEATURING --

Steven Bernstein / Slide trumpet
Briggan Krauss / Saxophones
Tony Scherr / Bass
Kenny Wollesen / Drums

http://www.stevenbernstein.net/sexmob/

Sexmob continues to deconstruct familiar pop tunes with subversive impunity. Everything from Prince’s “Sign O’ the Times” to John Barry’s “Goldfinger”, the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple”, Nirvana’s “About a Girl”, the Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday”, Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth”, Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” and ABBA’s “Fernando” is fair game for this band of musical renegades.

Bernstein is explicit about Sexmob not being a cover band.

”Covers to me means you play it exactly like the record,” he explains. “I just take songs that I feel have a great melody and do them in my style. So I’ll pick a tune and tell the guys, ‘Let’s Sexmob this!’ And I realize that's what jazz musicians have always done. That’s how Lester Young and Charlie Parker and Miles Davis got popular. They played the songs that everyone knew. And because they could recognize the song then that invited them into their style."

Sexmob came together in 1996 in a weekly residency at the Knitting Factory Tap Room and in 1998 released its debut, Din of Inequity. They followed with 2000’s Solid Sender, 2001’s Sex Mob Does Bond, 2003’s Dime Grind Palace, 2006’s Sexotica, 2009’s Sex Mob Meets Medeski: Live in Willisau and 2013’s Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti: Sex Mob Plays Fellini. The group’s latest, Cultural Capital, is the first Sexmob recording to feature all Bernstein original compositions. “Some of them, like ‘Bari Si,’ ‘Step Apache’ and ‘Syrup’ are through-composed like Jelly Roll Morton pieces,” he explains. “And some like ‘4 Cents’ and ‘Street’ and are more jammy, where we take a little idea — a line or a groove — and just develop it.”

Bernstein and his Sexmob crew continue to push the envelope in delightfully subversive ways on their fiercely independent, self-produced new outing, Cultural Capital.

Bernstein’s on-stage antics and the band’s amazing musicianship are the focal points. They never rehearse. They never have a set list. Things are constantly fresh.

I *should* be playing Wednesday afternoon at the Woodstock Farm Festival with my pal, Bruce Jay Milner, but ... unless they misspelled my name "Rusk Mountain Ramblers," it seems like they've double-booked the afternoon. So, that's not happening after all.

So, instead of playing for just a few hundred people in a bustling local farmers' market, I'm going to play for untold, uncountable THOUSANDS of people all over the planet (if they should tune in!) Wow!

Here are some things to know:

• Here's how to watch on Facebook (if that's your thing): https://www.facebook.com/marjiz/posts/10165134038700316

"Popa Chubby’s a big man....but his music is much bigger....[Chubby will] continue carrying the torch for the blues....and put on a damn good show. What more can one say?" - Elmore

Chubby took his cue from artists of the '60s, including Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among others. In his early twenties, he worked for a while backing punk poet Richard Hell. Chubby's first big break was winning a national blues talent search sponsored by KLON, a public radio station in Long Beach, California. He won New Artist of the Year, and opened the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1992, and has been rocking audience with his bold approach to music ever since.

Chubby continues to play more than 200 club dates a year, and has released numerous albums worldwide, since. Most notably, his Sony/Okeh debut, 'Booty and the Beast', was produced by longtime Atlantic Records engineer/producer TOM DOWD, whose recordings by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, among others are legendary!

Popa Chubby latest album "Prime Cuts: The Very Best of the Beast from the East", is self-selected “greatest hits” collection includes favorite cuts from his nearly three decades of bringing his version of the blues to the people. No one can accuse Ted Horowitz (aka: Popa Chubby) of taking the easy route on his long musical journey, but in doing it “his way” he has managed to gather plenty of fans along the way. This collection is as much for them, as it is for Popa Chubby.

Frank Loesser’s masterpiece, The Most Happy Fella, is a gorgeous meditation on our longing for human connection, made only more poignant by the isolation of the past year.

Loesser’s lyrical score is performed by seven female and non-binary voices backed by thirteen musicians. Most Happy is conceived by director Daniel Fish, along with Daniel Kluger and Nathan Koci—his musical collaborators from the Tony Award-winning Bard SummerScape production of Oklahoma!—giving audiences a new way to experience the songs of an American musical treasure.

"Scott Sharrard | 'Saving Grace' - The Animated Film: https://youtu.be/my4jdT2YPo8

Sharrard spent nearly a decade as lead guitarist and bandleader to the late Gregg Allman.

Their partnership included the Sharrard-penned “Love Like Kerosene,” which Allman covered on 2015’s “Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA,” and again on Allman’s eighth and final solo album, the posthumous, GRAMMY-nominated “Southern Blood” (Rounder Records, 2017).

Another “Southern Blood” track, “My Only True Friend” – co-written by Sharrard and Allman – earned a GRAMMY nomination for Americana Song of the Year.

The singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer and arranger earlier released three albums with The Chesterfields before embarking on a series of solo efforts. The Michigan natives latest, the top 10 Billboard blues charting solo effort and widely critically acclaimed “Saving Grace,” was delivered in 2018.

Scott will be releasing new digital singles on Immediate Family Records. The songs will be a preview of the new LP, dropping in Fall 2021. As the country (and eventually the world) opens up, watch for more live ticketed events around the LP release.
In addition to touring all over the USA and the world with his band, Scott is the newest member of the legendary Rock and Roll Band Little Feat, stepping in after the passing of Paul Barrere back in November 2019. They plan to collaborate on more shows and a new Little Feat album in 2021.

Jericho is the first single from JLH's upcoming EP, and is available on all major digital music platforms.
Jane Lee Hooker - Jericho (official video)
https://youtu.be/vf5Mm3LksIM

It’s fiery, just the right level of grubby, and a righteous kick in the shins." -Classic Rock Magazine

"...Attitude and swagger by the lorry load...rocks like a mother." - Music Republic Magazine

http://www.janeleehooker.com/

JLH are not new to the game. The five members have decades of experience playing, recording, and touring both nationally and internationally. This a band of five women from New York City infuse the grit and attitude of their hometown into the blues.

With double lead guitars, a heavy rhythm section, and soul-scouring vocals, JLH honors the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Winter, Big Mama Thornton, and other blues greats. Nominated for The Deli’s Best of 2014 Poll for Emerging NYC Artists, JLH is a blistering blues monster capable of whispering in your ear before stomping on your heart.

JLH’s debut, No B!, was released in November 2014 - since, they’ve shared bills with Death Valley Girls, Supersuckers, The Ike Reilly Assassination, Frightwig, Whiskey Shivers, Steepwater Band, The Wailers, Bernard Fowler, and the Bluebonnets (feat. Kathy Valentine, ex Go-Go’s), among others.

So how’d this gang of pros find each other? Guitarists Hightop and Tina honed their love of blazing dual leads in Helldorado in the ’90s. From there, Hightop joined Nashville Pussy, Tina joined Bad Wizard, and both toured the world. But they missed the rush of trading guitar solos with one another, leaving audiences howling with joy.

They recruited Mary, who played bass with Hightop in the punk band the Wives. Drummer, Cool Whip got the nod before she even finished slamming out the first song of her audition. And no singer in the entire city can bring a crowd to its knees harder or faster than Dana Danger Athens.
