From writer / director Kuro Tanino and his company Niwa Gekidan Penino, The Dark Master tells the story of a young man who stumbles into a Japanese diner and unexpectedly is given a job by the owner to run the establishment. The owner mysteriously disappears, but hands the young man an earpiece so he can give him instructions and remain a voice inside the young man's head...
The Dark Master is a disturbing contemporary vision of thought control and the manipulation of desire through visual storytelling, this time brought to life through Virtual Reality headsets for the live audience, who will be able to virtually take a seat at the counter in the diner, creating an absolutely immersive theatre experience. The U.S. premiere of The Dark Master is co-presented with the Japan Society, NYC.

Commemorating the Emancipation Proclamation
http://www.juneteenth.com/

On June 19th Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free - two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. The celebrations that followed the reading of the proclamation began a tradition that has lasted for one hundred and forty four years, and today is hosted in cities across America and beyond.

"African hi-life and every other kind of rhythmic style....a moving feast of homegrown music, heavily inflected with jazzy improvisations....often mixing Earth, Wind and Fire grooves with percussive tumbling....set on a collision course with myriad of styles in the popular realm." - World Music Report

FEATURING:
Paa Kow: Drums / Lead Vocal
Tom Ogunribido / Bass
Jonnie Cohen / Guitar
Solomon Goldbas / Keyboards
Peyton Shuffield / Percussion
Jeff Pierre / Percussion
Joel Michael Timm / Trombone
Brad Goode / Trumpet
Eric Levine / Trumpet

Widely recognized as one of the most remarkable drummers to tour in Africa, Europe, and the US, Paa Kow has toured internationally, sharing stages with both African and American luminaries including Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede and Victor Wooten.

The Ghana-born drummer and composer, Paa Kow, (pronounced Pah-Ko), blends the rhythm and artistry of his home with jazz and African roots, creating his own Afro-Fusion sound. Dubbed "Ghana's most artistic drummer" (Modern Ghana), he plays a custom, traditionally inspired Ghanaian drum set that is the only one of its kind in the world, guaranteeing concert goers an extraordinary musical experience.

His release, Cookpot, (2017) has all the ingredients and deep rhythms to tastefully serve up that cookin' groove Paa Kow calls Afro-Fusion.
