Fusing modern attitude with vintage swagger, Jane Lee Hooker exploded out of NY City with 2016’s No B! – a debut album whose rocket-fueled blues covers won acclaim from both Rocks Magazine and American Blue’s Scene and led them onto major stages like Rockpalast in Germany, Mountain Jam, and The Big Blues Bender. Individually, the five members have pedigree to burn, tearing up stages in seminal bands from Nashville Pussy to Bad Wizard. But when Dana ‘Danger’ Athens (vocals), Hail Mary Z
(bass), Ron ‘Lightnin’ Salvo (drums), Tracy ‘Hightop’ (guitar) and Tina ‘T Bone’ Gorin (guitar) hooked up in 2013, they swore a blood pact to take JLH all the way.

“We’re a gang. We’re a family.”

Their second album, Spiritus (Ruf Records) finds the band writing their own entry into the great rock 'n' roll songbook. The album was written by the band as a unit, and they hit the studio with producer Matt Chiaravalle. “We wanted this album to sound like we do live – raw & high energy.” On 'How Ya Doin’' Dana treats this studio album like a live show, bantering with an imagined crowd over revving guitars and hand-claps, 'Gimme That' is a Stones-worthy swagger that blooms into a stomp-&-holler climax, while 'Mama Said' features dueling guitars, rumbling bass and a defiant pick-yourself-up lyric. 'Be My Baby' rides on a cool-as-hell guitar part, then there’s 'Black Rat', a blues-on-speed riot with Dana firing her vocal like a machine gun. In an album of impressive stylistic shifts, there’s also 'The Breeze', a nine-minute blues slow-burner. 'How Bright The Moon' is a marked change of pace; starting out with piano and a tender, nuanced vocal, which breaks into a roaring soul torch-song. 'Later On' has over 200k streams on Spotify.

Featuring Special Guest JOHN MEDESKI !

http://www.stevenbernstein.net/sexmob/

Born in NY City’s downtown scene during the 90s, legendary band Sexmob is a quartet of blisteringly talented, boundary-pushing musicians who play wholly re-imagined hits from all corners of popular music. You might recognize the tune, but we guarantee you’ve never heard them like this before!

For 20 years, Sexmob has continued to redefine jazz, while being part of it. There is already a generation of young musicians inspired by their recordings & legendary live performances. As each member of Sexmob evolves in their own projects, new sounds are folded into their “big tent”.

During an evening of film music, the crowd went crazy for the “James Bond Theme". Bernstein realized that the audience was much more attuned to their playing when they recognized the tune. The band expanded their songbook to include songs by Prince, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, & even the “Macarena” found its way into a set. The rule - the song had to have a strong enough melody to withstand serious deconstruction!

Bernstein said in Jazz Asylum, “I realize that’s what jazz musicians have always done. That’s how Lester Young got popular; it’s how Charlie Parker got popular; it’s how Miles Davis got popular; that’s how John Coltrane got popular. They played the songs that everyone knew. And because listeners could recognize the song, they were invited into those players' new style.”

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, Barry Oreck writes thought-provoking, often darkly humorous songs on a range of topics from the personal to the political. His songs, touching on societal and ecological issues as well as the perils of aging and long-forgotten love, harness the power of music to connect and inspire others.
Oreck honed his craft in the rich folk and blues tradition of his native Chicago, and has three albums to date, a self-titled 2016 release featuring 10 original tracks and a 2018 follow-up, How the Bright Earth Spun, a collection of new and old songs spanning the folk tradition with intricate guitar interplay, tight vocal harmonies, and rousing fiddle. His latest, We Fit Together, reached #9 on the folk radio chart in May 2020.
Oreck has also spent decades in New York as a performer and choreographer in dance and theater (nicollandoreck.com) and creating sound and text scores for numerous productions.
