Modern Music Fest: Conor Hanick Performs Galina Ustvolskaya
Classical/Opera, Instrumental
PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century
2980 Route 66 PO Box 321 Chatham, NY 12037
Chatham, NY   See Map
Conor Hanick will perform the piano sonatas of Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya on August 29 @ 7 pm from PS21's theater. The program will also be broadcast through PS21's Facebook Live.

Called by musicologist and critic Elmer Schönberger “the lady with a hammer,” Galina Ustvolskaya’s admirers included Dmitri Shostakovich, who predicted that her work would “be valued by all who perceive truth in music to be of paramount importance.”

Conor Hanick, a champion of an astonishing variety of contemporary and iconic composers, brings to his performances a “technical refinement, color, crispness [that] would benefit works by any master,” as Anthony Tommasini wrote in the New York Times in 2014. In Ustvolskaya’s sonatas, his playing communicates what conductor Leon Botstein has described as the composer’s “hypnotic quality that is not about minimalist repetition, but about sonority.”

In-person tickets still available.

Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 pm PS21 is excited to present the award-winning composer and virtuoso pianist Conrad Tao performing Frederic Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, thirty-six variations on the Chilean workers’ anthem ¡El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido! The song was written by Sergio Ortega in June 1973, during the presidency of Salvador Allende, and became, in Ortega’s words, “a call to action for the resistance in Chile” following Allende’s overthrow by the right-wing dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Conrad Tao's performance of People United was originally scheduled as part of PS21's Power to the People May Day weekend to celebrate workers and their struggle for fair labor practices, yet we feel it is even more relevant to our audience today. Given the coronavirus's impact on workers and their families worldwide, this concert will inspire and uplift you, while also introducing you to Tao's exceptional talent.
