FEATURING ~ Steve Balkun/Guitar/Thumb-Bone Bass/Vocals, Nick Balkun/Drums/Vocals, Special Guest ~Tommy Weeks (Funky Dawgz Brass Band): Saxophone

https://www.balkunbrothers.com/

Known for their explosive live shows, internationally touring rock n’ roll band, Balkun Brothers is reinventing the term “power duo” with their heavy hitting, new-age, psychedelic rock n' roll.

Face-melting guitar riffs are met with a wall of earth-quaking bass drum hits. This ferocious flaming meteor of a duo grew up studying the sounds of Son House, Johnny Winter, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, then smashing the knowledge together with Motorhead, Primus, Rage Against the Machine, The Doors, Motley Crue and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Their sophomore album, ‘DEVIL ON TV’, was released on French Record label, Dixiefrog Records, and delivered the kind of honest songwriting and personal experience that connects with fans of all ages. They return to their rock and blues roots on the latest album, The Sun Studio Sessions. The brothers pay tribute to their musical forefathers with songs ranging from fast, up-tempo rock anthems to dirty, sweat-covered, backwoods delta blues. Engineered by Sun Studios owner, Ples Hampton, using the same vintage soundboard, microphones and tape delays that Phillips utilized in the 1950's. The album was recorded overnight, just how Sam Phillips used to do it with the blues legends, in the same room that captured countless hits.

This Saturday, August 15, we launch our Modern Music Fest, with Conor Hanick performing the six piano sonatas of the Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya.

Called by musicologist and critic Elmer Schönberger “the lady with a hammer,” her admirers included Dmitri Shostakovich, who predicted that her work would “be valued by all who perceive truth in music to be of paramount importance.”

Hanick, a champion of an astonishing variety of contemporary and iconic composers, brings to his performances a “technical refinement, color, crispness and [that] would benefit works by any master,” critic Anthony Tommasini wrote in 2014.

Helene Cronin, a Texas artist, released her album Old Ghosts & Lost Causes in 2019 to unanimous critical acclaim in the Folk/Americana world. She is a 2018 Kerrville New Folk Winner. Her music draws comparisons to Lori McKenna, Mary Gauthier, even Leonard Cohen, and others who are known for strong lyrics, unique voices and honest perspectives. For 16 years, she's maintained a presence in Nashville writing for the commercial market. She plays Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, venues around Texas, house concerts & festivals. Her most well-known song to date is "Lucky Me" which she wrote after a chance conversation with a soldier in an airport. That song has opened many doors including singing appearances and opportunities on national TV shows and for many military events. Helene considers herself an acoustic storyteller. Audiences consistently say she is "raw, intimate and vulnerable", very personal in her performances. Helene is a native of Long Island.

James Maddock has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). According to radio legend Vin Scelsa, Maddock's "heartbreakingly beautiful and exquisitely crafted" music "touches the soul."

As a songwriter, James has had 3 songs co-written with Mike Scott on the Waterboys album Modern Blues (Top 50 UK Albums Chart), a co-write with Gary Barlow (“Actress”) on Barlow’s album (2X Platinum), as well as a cut (“Fragile”) on the Dirt On My Tongue album by emerging UK artist Jo Harman.

His album, If It Ain’t Fixed, Don’t Break It, (2018) is a collection of songs that nods to the pioneers of popular music, from the two Louie’s; Armstrong and Jordan, to Chuck Berry, with a side trip to the land of Townes. In fact, the record includes a rare upbeat cover of the Townes Van Zandt chestnut “Loretta”. With his long-time group of players (Aaron Comess, Ben Stivers, and Drew Mortali) the record was made in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Maddock's latest record No Time to Cry is slated for release August 28, 2020.

His versatility on piano, Hammond B-3 organ, accordion, various vintage keyboards and harmonica plus his distinct vocal stylings have have firmly established him as one of NY City's most sought after musicians.

FEATURING TONIGHT: Continental Drifters' Guitarist, ROBERT MACHE'

https://www.discogs.com/artist/585482-Robert-Mache?type=Credits

www.daynakurtz.com

Vocalist/writer/musician/producer, Dayna Kurtz, has built a formidable body of recordings, won an international reputation as a riveting live performer, amassed an extensive file of rapturous critical raves and earned an equally devoted audience around the world.

Dayna Kurtz is the kind of artist who inspires wild-eyed zealotry among her fans. Here are 3 reasons:

1. She's an artist's artist, whose whiskeyed, determined alto earns her comparisons with Nina Simone.

2. While Europeans adore her, she's obscenely underappreciated in her own country.

3. Her songs straddle a difficult space between jazz, rock, and folk, and are pure poetry.

Dayna Kurtz was named Female Songwriter of the Year by the National Academy of Songwriters. Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt have raved about her in interviews, and she’s performed on World Cafe, Mountain Stage and NPR’s Morning Edition. She’s toured with &/or opened for Elvis Costello, Antony & the Johnsons, Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, B.B. King, Dr. John, Richie Havens, Keren Ann, Joe Henry, Olu Dara, Chris Whitley, Richard Buckner, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Kurtz's 7th studio album and collection of original compositions, is titled "Rise and Fall", followed by her recordings with Robert Mache', titled Here Vol. 1 and Here Vol. 2.

Friday, August 21 at 7:00 PM, Modern Music Fest continues with Timo Andres, a composer and pianist who grew up in rural Connecticut and lives in Brooklyn, NY. A Nonesuch Records artist, his album of orchestral works, Home Stretch, has been hailed for its “playful intelligence and individuality,” (The Guardian) and of his 2010 debut album for two pianos Shy and Mighty (performed by himself and duo partner David Kaplan), Alex Ross wrote in The New Yorker that “it achieves an unhurried grandeur that has rarely been felt in American music since John Adams came on the scene… more mighty than shy, [Andres] sounds like himself.”

During this recital, Andres will perform Rzewski’s Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues, Copland’s Piano Sonata, and his own Old Ground.
