Book reading
Paramount Hudson Valley Theater
1008 Brown St.
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Paramount Hudson Valley Arts presents a reading of FIRE IN A DARK HOUSE. Direct from its stunning premiere on the West Coast , the drama explores the story of two star-crossed young lovers, their families and community, all thrown into turmoil as anti-immigrant fervor sweeps the nation during World War I. FIRE IN A DARK HOUSE is a poignant wartime romance about a passionate young woman who falls for the son of a powerful newspaper publisher who is waging a dangerous propaganda campaign against immigrant families, including her own. Drawing inspiration from historical events, the play explores themes that resonate strongly today and asks us to consider what it means to be an American, an immigrant, a young Dreamer, and a patriot. The play, created by Mona Z. Smith and Traci Mariano will be part of the Paramount Hudson Valley play reading series and is made possible through a generous Arts Alive grant. We hope to see you there!

"Mr. Coryell fires on all cylinders, track after track, with strong originals, his reliably soulful vocals and subtly dazzling, fluid solos". - Duane Verh/Roots Music Report

Coryell is a triple threat contemporary blues artist who sings, writes and plays guitar with the best. As the son of guitar legend Larry Coryell.

Murali’s CD "Sugar Lips" (2009) reached # 5 on the Living Blues Radio Chart - recorded in Nashville with Tom Hambridge producer of Buddy Guy’s latest Grammy winner and featured guests, Joe Louis Walker and Larry Coryell. Billboard called it “one sweet triptych across the musical map”.

Coryell's album, Restless Mind (2015) is funky, bluesy, jazzy, and guitar driven. Murali does a great job of being a “standard” bluesman by singing about everyday woes such as love, life, money, struggles, and women.

In honor of this year's NEA Big Read theme, we're asking artists who have Appalachian themed music in their repertoire to consider including it in their performance. It's NOT a must (cuz it's an OPEN mic, after all), but if you've got 'em, consider flauntin' 'em.

Featured act award winning singer-songwriter Loretta Hagen is celebrated for ‘heart driven, soul filling, Folk Americana.‘ With 4 critically acclaimed CDs to her credit, Loretta’s rich alto voice and strong song-writing skills have led her to win many awards, including a JAM Awards' (Jersey Acoustic Music Awards) “Top Female Songwriter of the Year,” JAM nomination for “Album of the Year,” winner of the NJ Folk Festival Songwriter Competition and 2 time designation as a CT Folk Festival finalist.

As a young child, Kazi Oliver tapped out rhythms on many a household item, including tables, counters, even a sister or two. When his mother discovered that a local after school program offered African drumming, Kazi was promptly directed to attend. Since these early beginnings, he has truly become the drummers' version of the Pied Piper, engaging children and adults in experiencing the energy and excitement of African drumming.

Kazi has been teaching for 45 years and performing for over 40 years. Professionally, Kazi has performed at the Village Vanguard, the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and on ABC-TV's "The View." Yet Kazi enjoys just as much, his appearances at community festivals, schools and events that bring together multi-generational and multicultural audiences to experience and enjoy the awesome power of the African drum.

“Listening to Castañeda combine intricate, bop-inspired finger-picking and independent, grooving bass lines rooted in the Afro-Cuban tradition with dramatic, percussive chords, it’s easy to see why so many people are dazzled — his sound is orchestral in scope.” — All About Jazz

Featuring: Bernie Servodio / Vocals, Billy Beehler / Guitar & Vocals, George McGann / Bass, Dave Mucci / Drums & Vocals, and vocalist, Desaree Colon

https://www.facebook.com/TheCeesarBand/

The Ceesar band has been covering Led Zepplin, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, Beatles, and Tom Petty, among others. The band plays with such an infectious energy, you can’t help but be pulled in.

Bernie has the ability to capture the quality of an artist’s voice, on any cover. Billy will send chills through you with the intensity of his guitar playing. The rhythm section's bass player, George McGann and drummer,Dave Mucci, are putting down a tight, solid groove to lay the foundation for the music that will move you before you even know you're moving.

The chemistry created by these four musicians comes around only once - maybe twice - through any musician’s career.
