Dramatists Guild Footlight Series- The Good Father
Book reading
Paramount Hudson Valley Theater
1008 Brown St
Peekskill, NY   See Map
THE GOOD FATHER, by Adrienne LaValley (Peekskill, NY.)- A family with generational bipolar disorder and what happens when that goes unchecked, allowing every new generation to be deeply affected in their own way. It sheds light on the decades of irreparable damage that can be caused by choosing to keep silent about a family’s mental illness. Shame and fear perpetuate the idea that hurt people, hurt people. Paramount Hudson Valley Arts is delighted to host the Dramatists Guild Footlight Series DG Footlights™ a program, created and moderated by the Dramatists Guild, that connects dramatists with space in which to hold a public reading of a new work that is currently in development. The readings are open and free to the public. To reserve your spot email the box office at boxoffice@paramounthudsonvalley.com.

1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The world's zaniest big band performs and re-forms the music of Zappa, and Captain Beefheart. Tonight featuring legendary slide guitarist Denny Walley!

In 1955, he met Frank Zappa. “I was 12 going on 13, and we moved into the same housing development that Frank Zappa lived in,” Walley says. “I became best friends with Frank’s brother Bobby.

In 1974: “I walked in the door and could’ve dropped to my knees,” he says. “George Duke was on keyboards. Tom Fowler was the bass player. Chester Thompson was behind the drums, plus Napoleon Murphy Brock and Frank. That was what I walked into.”

palermobigband.com

To paraphrase a rhetorical question once posed by Frank Zappa: Does humor belong in jazz? For arranger, composer, saxophonist and bandleader Ed Palermo, the answer to that query has long been “Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes!”

After many years of playing together in various combinations, this trio was formed to realize its potential within a common theme. Honesty.

Those in the worldwide community are well aware of their accomplishments over the decades. Artists such as Paul Motion, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton, Barry Altchul, Dave Douglas, Gary Peacock, Brenda Bufalino, Karl Berger, Ahmad Jamal and a host of others have had the good fortune to collaborate with these three extraordinary musicians, who have left an indelible mark on the history of jazz and improvised music.

With the Sept 2018 release of “Dreamstruck” on the Not Two label, the trio of Harvey Sorgen - Joe Fonda - Marilyn Crispell Trio will be on tour worldwide promoting the new album .

Shelley Posen is an Ottawa, Canada-based songwriter and long-time performer of his own and traditional songs. He writes in too many styles and on too many subjects (canoes to codfish, seders to Sacred Harp) for them to be “genre-fied.” But they are recognized not only for their variety, but for their wit, craftsmanship, and their profound effect on listeners. They’ve been recorded by artists in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, and sung around campfires and in living rooms by people who love a good song. Shelley is a member of the much-admired vocal trio, Finest Kind, who performed for years at folk venues on both sides of the Atlantic, and reunite nowadays for Christmas concerts in Ottawa. Other than there, the only place to hear Shelley’s songs sung by him is on his CDs (5 solo, 7 with Finest Kind), and radio programs like Hootenanny Café. He is still writing great songs and recording them, but he has retired from solo performance.

BENEFIT FOR URSULA TAYLOR

This month Poelodies lends its stage in support of our friend, poet Ursula Taylor, who needs our help. She has been evicted from senior housing and is living in a shelter on $40 a month. Ursula has been a supporter of poetry events in Beacon for many years and has become a fixture on the Beacon Poetry scene, occasionally sharing her own poems. We wish to return the support she has given us these many years.

Host: Poet Gold’s poetry balances the written word with performance, delivering Spoken Word Poetry that is both transformative and entertaining. She is the recipient of the 2016 Dutchess County Executive’s “Artivist” award and appointed the 2017 and 2018 NYS Dutchess County Poet Laureate.
