The Knights and Yo-Yo Ma Featured Concert
Classical/Opera
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts
149 Girdle Ridge Rd
Katonah, NY   See Map
Overview In this colorful and wide-ranging program, The Knights team up with the inimitable cellist Yo-Yo Ma for music that bursts with individual creativity and reaction to fresh insights. For the young Mendelssohn, immersion in the arts and culture of Italy inspired a new symphony. In Federico II, Giovanni Sollima takes inspiration from the 13th-century Holy Roman Emperor who paved the way for the advances of the Renaissance. In Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul (written for Yo-Yo Ma in 2006) the composer combines two perspectives, simultaneously observing the Earth from afar, as if from the heavens, and also plunging into the turbulent depths of the human and earthly experience.

(Note: We'll do one more before winter after this, on Thurs. Nov. 5, then hibernate til April, 2016.) An opportunity for musicians and those with no prior musical training at all to explore some of the basic ways that we can communicate non-verbally through the beautiful medium of pure vocal tones and rhythmic improvisations. In most primary and tribal cultures the entire community regularly joined in some form of percussion and chanting of tones or vocables.

Join Peter Blum and Bill Ross as we, as a community, find ways to rediscover these enriching practices, and have some fun with collective improvising. Note: Although certain aspects may be similar, this is not a drum circle, or a kirtan group.
