Jazz
The FALCON

Marlboro, NY   See Map
The combined experience of the members in the Art Lande Quartet is astounding and connects with most of the major figures in the last 40 years of modern Jazz. More importantly, this group of musicians shares a language and aesthetic that holds true for the wide range of music that will be explored.

Tony Moreno's unique way of exposing multiple time layers as well as mixing subtle space and a powerful beat complements Dean Johnson's rich tone, shiny harmonics, and rhythmic propulsion.

Art Lande and Bruce Williamson have a long-standing dialogue about melodic counterpoint and harmonic flexibility. All four are musicians whose ears tell them what to play and who will link up consistently to tell dynamic stories together.

Innovative modern jazz with a backbone. Featuring Art Lande (piano), Bruce Williamson (woodwinds), Dean Johnson (bass), Tony Moreno (drums).

A rarity in the jazz world; Stryker and Slagle have stuck together since the 80s. After releasing 5 CD's; 2008's "The Scene" received four Stars in Downbeat, calling it “A superior snapshot of the contemporary center of jazz”. Their most recent CD "Keeper" is their strongest and most well reviewed work yet.

Stryker spent 13 years with Stanley Turrentine, worked with Jack McDuff and Kevin Mahogany and has 20 CD’s as a leader and 50 as a sideman. Voted a Rising Star the last several years in the Downbeat Critics Poll, Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls Dave “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”

Saxophonist Steve Slagle has released 10 CD’s as a leader, and performed as a sideman with Machito, Charlie Haden, Milton Nascimento, Carla Bley, Joe Lovano's Nonet and was musical director of the Mingus Big Band for many years. I don't often play in Sullivan County, and I guess that's probably an understatement. I learned about this lovely little gem from a dear friend a couple of years ago and was instantly attracted to it. The menu is interesting, the interior edgy and artful. I accosted Rob, the chef/owner, and gave him a CD and a card. I was delighted to receive an email from him. The date is set, and I'm really looking forward to this show! Hope to see you there, too.

BeanRunner Cafe

Peekskill, NY   See Map
Conjunto Sazon was inspired by the music of Cuba and Puerto Rico. The band, a small conjunto with a huge sound, identifies with the rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean; Salsa, Son, Rumba, Bomba, Plena, as well as Merengue. The veteran musicians of this conjunto, to their credit, have performed and recorded with world renowned artists such as Celia Cruz, Pete "El Conde" Rodriquez, Eddie Palmieri, Monguito "el unico", los Kimbos, and the New Swing Sextet to name a few. This conjunto creates a traditional/modern energetic sound by placing the interlocking rhythmic figures of percussion and Cuban Tres under a smoothly swinging melody to create a ".... new sound Conjunto Sazon.”

One of the things we've loved over these past 5 years is discovering new, and young, talent. We've known and admired bandleader/drummer Manny since he was 11. It's fitting that he's performing his first weekend gig with us tonight.

Bakklash performs a variety of Rock, Funk & Jazz from artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bowling for Soup, Foster the People, The Police, Blink 182, Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, The Black Keys, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Cee Lo, Nickelback, Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many more!

With Emmanuel Henry, drummer/singer and founding member of Bakklash; Jake Albi (guitar/vocals), Greg Schettino (bass/harmonies), Mark McIntyre (guitar) and Megan Longwell (lead vocals).

The band produces great harmonies and the two guitarists blend their unique styles--Albi with electric Rock and McIntyre playing more Blues/Jazz--to create their special sound. The talent of these young musicians will blow you away.

Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. His Big Band may deliver Zappa, Hendrix, Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, with lush turns and twists. The legendary Gil Evans wonderfully articulated Palermo’s unusual approach to traditional instrumentation:

The legendary Gil Evans wonderfully articulated Palermo’s unusual approach to traditional instrumentation: “I first heard Ed Palermo’s music in a small club in the SoHo section of Manhattan. He was using the instrumentation of a traditional big band yet his arrangements and songs were anything but that. When I thought the music was going a certain direction, it would suddenly turn a corner. Ed has the ability to keep that important balance between cohesiveness and unpredictability. Ed Palermo’s music is alive and represents now.”

MOPCO brings its unique brand of improv to The Comedy Works -- Saturday nights at 8:00pm.

"You Never Know..." is, well, darn it all, it's unpredictable.

On any given Saturday night, the audience might take part in Play Dough Theatre, or judge a grudge match between two improv directors, or take to the stage in one of the many audience participation games the company offers, or sing along in a rousing improvised chorus, or....hey, you never know.

But let's be clear: Mopco is not affiliated with any state Lottery games.

12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Five years ago, Johnny Feds & da Bluez Boyz were the first band to ever perform for us. So, it wouldn't be a 12 Grapes party without Johnny & da Boyz helping us celebrate our 5th Anniversary!

Get ready to party big-time, cause when da Bluez Boyz hit the stage, it's a knock-yer-socks-off night of great music. With Johnny Feds on guitar and vocals, John "Elmo" Lawson on bass, Fred Lind on keys and Paul Undersinger on drums. Joining Johnny in a Bluez Boyz reunion is JP Patrick on sax/vox/harp.

Johnny & da Boyz won the most votes from the judges in the 2008 Connecticut Blues Society's Blues Challenge, taking them into the finals. Da Boyz win votes from their fans every time they hit the stage, all across the tri-state and at 12 Grapes in particular. As they say, "Once Da Boyz get cookin' they'll boogie your woogie 'till you can't find your way home!"
