Live Music at Albany Coffee House
with Aaron Civic
Blues, Jazz, and New Age
Tierra Coffee Roasters
292 Delaware Ave.
Albany , NY   See Map
Tierra Coffee Roasters will offer free live music at its newest location on Delaware Avenue on March 17 featuring guitarist/singer Aaron Civic. The show will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the shop at 292 Delaware Ave, next door to the Spectrum Theater. Civic has performed throughout the Capital Region for more than eight years. His genres have included fusion jazz, blues, new wave, alternative rock and Spanish flamenco. He uses a keyboard as a synthesizer for producing bass guitar, drums, and other synth sounds, while also using a looping pedal to loop his guitar and keyboard. This combination allows him to sing and perform solos on guitar and keyboard while having the sound of a full band. Tierra Coffee Roasters purchased the shop in early 2013 and has been making a variety of changes in menu, pricing and adding music events to draw a neighborhood crowd. The original location at 1038 Madison Avenue, near the Madison Theater, also offers live music. Call (518) 434-0333.

Marty Elkins is a force to be reckoned with as she weaves her way in and out of up tempo songs, ballads, bossa novas, and swing tunes. Marty is equally comfortable with a swinging seven piece band as she is with an intimate trio.

Ron Della Ciesa, of WGBH/Boston says of her latest release, “Marty reminds me of some of the classic big band singers like Rosemary Clooney and Anita O’Day.” “She’s a staunch traditionalist who polishes songs, then wears ’em proudly,” states Jeff Levinson from Hot House Jazz Magazine.

1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Slam Allen’s unique blend of soul and blues, from his time on the famous Chitlin' to international performances around the world, radiates his enthusiasm and has been shared with thousands of listeners.

As the lead singer and guitarist, in the legendary James Cotton Band, Allen says, "It's one of the highlights and privileges of my life to play with Cotton…He is one of the last living legends, and there's so much history there. Cotton was directly connected to Muddy Waters -- who was a major factor in the blues world as well as being one of my all time favorites. Playing with Cotton is such a great experience for me and there are things you can learn from him that you can't learn from any school. It's a great honor."

Music is in Allen's blood - from his father and uncles, known as the Allen Brothers Band. Allen carries on the family legacy.

His success as a sideman with such greats as McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard, Astrud Gilberto, Willie Colon and Toshiko Akiyoshi attests not only to the skill and variety of Bonilla's talent, but also to a mind restlessly committed to exploring some of the most complex and demanding music of our time. Yet there is nothing rarefied about the Bonilla experience. He has worked as a studio musician with Tony Bennett, Marc Anthony, La India and Mary J. Blige and understands the liveliness of pop as well as the rhythmic sway and punch of Latin Jazz.

Currently a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra under Arturo O'Farrill's direction (both 2009 Grammy winners) and Dave Douglas's latest group (Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy), Bonilla is one of those rare artists whose work is always expanding, taking in more and more while remaining singular and focused.

Guitarists Greg Carmichael and Miles Gilderdale celebrate a remarkable two decades plus since 1987's Red Dust and Spanish Lace established the British ensemble as an ever evolving, powerhouse force in contemporary jazz. Acoustic Alchemy's thousands of fans around the world may be feeling nostalgic, but the duo, while keeping their trademark acoustic guitar synergy front and center, is clearly committed to forging ahead. Carmichael explains the energy is the result of a natural chemistry he's developed with Gilderdale over the years since Gilderdale (formerly a backing guitarist with the band) became Carmichael's full partner after the passing of founding member Nick Webb in 1998 and the release that year of Positive Thinking.

Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies?

Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit?

Bernard Purdie's impeccable time and mastery of backbeats and grooves are celebrated. He recorded with James Brown, King Curtis, Louis Armstrong, Gato Barbieri, Hank Crawford and Dizzy Gillespie in 1980 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. He was CTI's house drummer in the '60s and '70s, - working with Grover Washington, Jr. and George Benson. Purdie toured with Curtis and Aretha Franklin in 1970, and was Franklin's music director until 1975. He has continued to work steadily and can be heard on countless discs by Brown, Franklin, Curtis, Gillespie, and Crawford among others.

Pawling, NY   See Map
Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter/pianist -- one of the first. Her groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock and jazz. She was one of the most covered artists in the 1960s and 1970s (Eli's Coming, Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues, Sweet Blindness). Her tragically premature passing in 1997 shocked her fans. Finally, in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. :|: In their new show, "Spero Plays Nyro," The Christine Spero Group will bring their own kind of power to Laura Nyro's music. Their arrangements with improvisation mixed with Laura's original arrangements have preserved the integrity of her music. Christine Spero has loved Laura's music from a young age when she was given "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" by a radio DJ friend. She was inspired by it to be bold in writing, singing and playing piano. Christine was the winner of the USA Songwriting Competition in the Jazz Category.

"Get Your Wings" captures Aerosmith in their '70s-style heyday, when they were known as "America's answer to the Rolling Stones." Raw, ragged, swaggerin', scarf wearin', down-and-dirty epic Rock 'n Roll done as faithfully as humanly possible. Get Your Wings also recreates the sounds of Aerosmith's biggest hits from the past three decades, too. If you've got an Aerosmith jones, this is the band to see! Even though this band is just getting off the ground they are destined to become the greatest, most authentic, exciting Aerosmith tribute band "on the planet".

The band features Doug Palmer on vocals/harp & scarves, Joe (Perry) Pepe Aquilino on guitars & "talk-box", Andy Rice on bass, Scotto (Wino) Rosenblit on guitars and Rob Gueli on drums.

Soulful Mountain Music
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Bow made a name for himself in Boston with 7 League Boots, a rock/reggae band that shared the stage with the likes of Fugazi, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Pearl Jam. In the Green Mountains of Vermont, he explored the Delta Blues playing slide guitar for the original Elbow and began a relationship with the banjo—both in the bluegrass group, The Benders, and on his own—that continues to this day.

Comprised of a failed painter, some lousy carpenters, and a piano tuner, these acclaimed artists cultivate progressive, soulful mountain music in the hills of Vermont with an electric banjo, various other string instruments, used parts found in drums, and a keen eye for the human condition. Having played with luminaries Levon Helm, John Hiatt, Booker T, and Ringo Starr, the band has seen its fair share of travel across these United States of America and the World at large and plan to do more while supporting their records of facts, analogies and metaphors.
