Blues, Jazz, and Rock (classic). Soul-Jazz
the Falcon
1348 Rte 9w
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Join us for some tasty soul-jazz and brunch at the Falcon in Marlboro!! Jb (Hammond Organ) toured for over 6 years with Grammy nominated singer Shemekia Copeland. With musical prodigy Myles Mancuso on guitar/vocals and blues veteran Chris Reddan on drums!

Both traditional and trailblazing...Highly recommended. ***Blues Review Magazine***

Baum's playing has a deep funk to it, with a big influence of Jimmy Smith. And Baum also brings in all kinds of other things as well - dissonant jazz, alternative rock, R&B. He's not too far off from what John Medeski does with Medeski, Martin and Wood, but with more of a blues streak to it. ***Jim Trageser. Escondido, Calif. ***

Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
Music was always a passion for Marc, and after graduating from law school he put his diploma on the shelf and fronted bands that played locally in New York City in venues such as CBGB’s, The Wetlands, and The Knitting Factory. At the same time, Berger also explored the American West, venturing into remote regions of its deserts and mountains. On one such excursion, he discovered “The Big It” by A.B. Guthrie on a revolving rack in a Navajo reservation trading post, and the collection of short stories ignited the idea of using his own travels to create a set of songs in the same cultural tradition. Berger has performed at Austin’s SXSW Music Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, and has opened shows for Bob Dylan, and other national acts. His song, “The Last One,” has been performed by Richie Havens in the United States and Europe, and has been quoted in the NewYork Times and featured on the CBS Evening News.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Ackerman's journey included, radio broadcasts in Australia, Hotel contracts in Asia, backing vocals at Carnegie Hall with Sting, Billy Joel and James Taylor. Nadia spent years studying and performing jazz. Nancy Wilson, Carmen MacRae and Betty Carter became her teachers. Nadia began hearing songs in her head.. The songs arrived in a complete form - lyrics, melodies, harmony and phrasing - as she was writing two songs a day. Having never written a song in her life she was a little perplexed as to what to do with it. Today Nadia has written over 150 compositions and drawing. Nadia has composed a body of work in novelty books. The lyrics are the stories; the drawings paint the picture of the song and a CD in the back completes the experience

With their eight-piece powerhouse ensemble tearing up New York’s funkiest clubs, Mark Palmer and Anthea White have built a sound that’s just a little bit Marvin Gaye, and a whole lot modern day. Their latest album, Dreamers (2010), is a testament to their unique vision and mastery of all things jazz, soul, funk and reggae. A future born from their storied international lineage. Marlboro, NY   See Map
The award-winning guitar slinger, deeply soulful vocalist and gifted songwriter has been releasing groundbreaking music since 1986, but his career goes all the way back to the mid-1960s. As a 16-year-old, he was the house guitarist at San Francisco's famed musical playground, The Matrix, where he played with or opened shows for everyone from Lightnin' Hopkins (who once threw him off the stage) to Jimi Hendrix to Thelonious Monk. The New York Times raves, "Walker is a singer with a Cadillac of a voice. He delivers no-nonsense, gutsy blues. His guitar solos are fast, wiry and incisive, moaning with bluesy despair." According to Living Blues, he is "one of today's modern musical masters." Rolling Stone simply calls him "ferocious."

Phoebe's Place

Teaneck, NJ   See Map
I am so excited to be playing a show about three blocks from where I spent my entire childhood! This is a brand-new arts café that derives its name from another former (though much more renowned) Teaneckian, the late, great Phoebe Snow. (I went to school with her younger sister, in fact.)

From a Star Ledger article: "Phoebe's Place, a new space dedicated to music, art, and poetry, is taking over the old Blast Coffee Bar space at 445 Cedar Lane...Phoebe's Place promises food as well as music and poetry. Michelle Schotanus, the former owner and chef of the respected and sorely missed Salsa! Mexican restaurant in Edgewater has agreed to take her talents to Teaneck. Lunch will be served from noon until 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday; dinner hours are 6 p.m to 10 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday."

There you have it! I very seldom get to that area, so I sure hope you can come!

Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has more than 20 original studio recordings and several live albums to their credit. The group has appeared at all the major music festivals and enjoys a history with some of the world’s classic music labels, Universal and Atlantic Records. Back in the day, Wishbone Ash cut their teeth on the US stadium circuit first opening for The Who. Once they began headlining in the States, Wishbone’s opening acts included Springsteen, Kiss and Aerosmith. Citing Wishbone Ash as an influence on their style, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Southern Rock outfits like Lynyrd Skynyrd and, more recently, heavyweights like Opeth and some of the guitar-based Indie/ Alternative bands, have all taken a little something from the legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. Truly, there is no other rock band on the planet that has done more with the twin guitar concept than the Ash.

Soñando
Latin
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The hot Latin sounds of Soñando have earned them the reputation as the Hudson Valley's premier Latin band. This spicy blend of music and musicians have performed in clubs, at private functions, community festivals, benefit concerts, on radio and television, as well as the Puerto Rico Day Parade in NYC, but the band is at home wherever a dance floor can be cleared. Fueled by a fiery rhythm section and high-octane horns, Soñando plays a wide variety of Latin styles from Plena and Son to Salsa and Merengue! "The name of the band is Spanish for "dreaming" but when the hordes come out for Soñando, they don't sleepwalk-they dance. And we're not talking a few perfunctory head-bobs or butt-wiggles, they dance until they go up in flames like, Tula's unquenchable bedroom in the Cuban lyrics above." -Woodstock Times

Jason Marsalis may be the youngest of the famed Marsalis siblings, but he definitely has the best vibes! His Vibes Quartet-including pianist Austin Johnson, drummer David Potter, and bassist Will Goble-will release their newest album, In a World of Mallets, on February 19th, 2013, and with a fire in his heart and a passion for the music, Jason's will to swing has never been more resolute.

As a vibraphonist, Jason's playing is unique and he often joins Shannon Powell and other New Orleans musicians on the bandstand. He has worked with such international jazz luminaries as Joe Henderson and Lionel Hampton, and with bands as diverse as Casa Samba (Brazilian) to Neslort (jazz fusion); and tours as the featured soloist with the Lionel Hampton Tribute Orchestra. His sense of style and tastefulness is well documented on recordings with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Marcus Printup, John Ellis, Fredrik Kronkvist, Stephen Riley, and Marcus Roberts to name a few.

Best known for his top ten hit, Lullaby, Shawn Mullins' musical accomplishments include a dozen self-produced records, two number one charting songs, a grammy nomination and thousands of live performances. One of his favorite accomplishments was the decision of the Austrailian Olympic Team to use his song Shimmer as their anthem. Since Shawn Mullins' Honeydew in 2008, the Atlanta-based singer/songwriter/bandleader has undergone a series of transformative experiences, leading to a "second coming" for the veteran artist. Evidence of Mullins' newfound level of musical and lyrical ambition courses comes through with his new album on Vanguard, Light You Up. This captivating new song cycle will likely be viewed as a flat-out revelation even by Mullins' most fervent fans. Mullins is active observer of life, translating life into song.
