Rock (classic)
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Back To The Garden 1969 has become one of our favorite bands here at the Towne Crier. This band is comprised of a group of skilled musicians (two of which were at the original Woodstock festival) who have performed together in various combinations over the years, but joined forces specifically to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival. This proved to be so much fun for everyone ~especially those who've come out to see them~ that there was no reason to stop! The band covers the wide variety of musical styles and classic sounds associated with Woodstock, including acoustic and electric rock, acid rock, folk music, and soul. Their musical performances are a tribute to the artists who helped make Woodstock the epic event that, to this day, remains unparalleled.

Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists. Gil Evans wonderfully articulated Palermo’s unusual approach to traditional instrumentation: Napoleon Murphy Brock- American singer, saxophonist and flute player, Napoleon Murphy Brock, is best known for his work with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, including the albums One Size Fits All, Roxy and Elsewhere, and Bongo Fury. His own most memorable vocal accomplishments are illustrated on the songs "Village of the Sun" and "Florentine Pogen." www.napoleonmbrock.com

Folk/Traditional, Acoustic, and Singer-Songwriter
Common Ground @ South Church
South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway
Dobbs Ferry, NY   See Map
No one writes quite like Antje Duvekot, who was influenced lyrically by the very greats — Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen, who are Mt. Rushmore-like figures to her. “Antje is the rare artist who can write about the social and the personal in the same breath,” says folk icon Ellis Paul. “Her voice has a sound of innocence and naivete which makes razor-sharp insights into the human condition.” And as Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh says, “Antje is the whole package.”

They meet in the middle with acoustic guitars. Standing next to other contemporary duos like The Weepies, The Civil Wars, The Swell Season, The Sea, The Sea is spare beauty, bravely unadorned. Or as the gifted singer-songwriter Amy Speace said about them “Two voices that blend like smoke and air. Like night and a whisper. Two distinct award-winning songwriters that meet in the mercury, collide and create emotionally spare music. Simple and true.”

Garland Jeffreys has been called an edgy urban poet, the sound of New York, a confessional singer-songwriter and an explorer of the links between rock, race and rebellion whose work should be taught in schools. With songs covered by artists as diverse as punk pioneers The Circle Jerks ("Wild in the Streets") and the neo-folk band Vetiver ("Lon Chaney"), Jeffreys is truly unclassifiable. Long known for his amazing roster of supporting musicians, such as Dr. John, Sonny Rollins, James Taylor, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Phoebe Snow, Garland's new, highly acclaimed The King Of In Between includes contributions from Duncan Sheik and old friend Lou Reed. It is the distillation of a long career dedicated to addressing socially conscious themes across a broad range of musical styles, and has been on a number of year-end best of lists including Rolling Stone, NPR Music, NY Daily News, Sound and Vision and MSN Music.
