This is a special showcase for us, featuring winners of Young Artist Talent Search competitions we have hosted here at the Towne Crier Cafe. What is a "Showcase"? Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Neil Young – even the greatest talents started somewhere. Sometimes it was at an open mic. And when they got good enough, they were invited to perform in a showcase with a few other talented artists. Our showcases, held on many Sunday nights, feature the best of local and regional talents. Yes, they are unknowns – for now. But they're good. For some, it's a launch pad to a great career. Somewhere, there are people who can say, "I saw Bob Dylan when he was just a kid starting out."

Terry Burns, youngest of the acclaimed Burns Sisters, recorded 3 Cd's with her sisters and later became a successful singer/songwriter for major publishing companies such as Larga Vista, EMI and MCA/Universal in Nashville. Ron Kristy's music scoring can be heard around the world on shows such as "20/20", "Dancing with the Stars", "Jimmy Kimmel Live", and "How I Met Your Mother". They met at a friend's party in Nashville in 2004 and since then, fell in love, got married, and had a sweet little boy - Noah Skye. They moved to upstate New York, where they have been performing regionally and recording their first CD together, "Caravan". Burns & Kristy released ‘Caravan’ to Folk Radio in July 2012, debuted on the charts in August at #16, remaining in the Top 20 in September. Says John Apice at No Depression: "atmospherics – like the one here in “Caravan”, that simply won’t age over the next decades but become something that will be worth coming back to – like a good novel.”

Funky Grooves and Mojo Blues ... A Smokin’ Hot Band ... Non-Stop Dancing - Top Shelf Professionals

Introducing The D-Squared Blues Band. The Brainchild of guitarist Dave Heinlein and sax/harp player David Laks.

Together they make D to the second power thus D-Squared. This band is made up of Hudson Valley seasoned professionals who love the music they create. Based out of Woodstock, NY this music show offers a night of non-stop dancing to classic and original music in the blues and funk tradition.

Because the rhythm section is so paramount to this group they have two alternating powerhouse drummers, Larry Balestra and Ruperto Ifil along with percussionist Chester Pertchik. Additionally the amazing Michael Colletti is on Bass Dennis Yerry on keys, and the one and only “Sultan of Sonic Soul”, Gus Mancini, who plays both saxophone and the WX5 Wind Synthesizer.

Collectively this is a musical force to be reckoned with by dancing and having a good time!

Dave Kearney was a founding member of “Reed Street,” opening for national acts including The Hollies, Ted Nugent, the Amboy Dukes, Steppenwolf, Seals and Croft, and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Then in 1971 he formed the alt-country band “Backslider.” This group played concerts, clubs and festivals from Delaware to Key West, opening for John Prine, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at the Wheel, and Ronnie Milsap. In both of these bands, Dave was the primary songwriter. Elly Wininger has been called everything from a ‘folk-blues legend’ to a ‘musical explosion.’ Getting her start in the folk revival scene of the 60’s & 70’s, Elly was a guitar student of David Bromberg. She is an award-winning songwriter and has been writing songs and picking guitar in clubs, coffeehouses and concert halls, while producing and hosting radio shows, and teaching songwriting to kids and adults of all abilities.

The Trapps
Americana. Folk & Rock n' Roll
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The Trapps are an American band tapping the roots of Americana, Folk and Rock and Roll with a strong emphasis on "the song" and lyrical fiber. All at once they grab you with powerful harmonies like the Jayhawks or rivet you with a high intensity jam like the Black Crowes, but for this band, it is never done loosely or in a way that pulls the listener away from the essence and presentation of the song itself. Full of risk and heart, they weave universal themes into a musical fabric that is entirely original yet feels like you have known the sound your entire life.

Jason Fine, Executive Editor, of Rolling Stone Magazine, says The Trapps are “Elegant yet raw, darkly emotional but shot through with light…rangy experimental roots rock played with confidence and hope.” Johnny Black, Music Director, High Plains Public Radio, Amarillo, TX says The Trapps are “An indie “roots” Americana act with raw, stark, honest-to-Hank emotional intensity and musical ability.”

You'll enjoy this intimate look at how musicians do what they love to do best: "play".

JP has been on the Blues music scene for years, and is a tremendously talented front-man, vocalist and songwriter. He plays Blues harp and alto sax, and always performs with passion and energy. His audiences feel it... and love it. His original songs are full of wit and charm. Songs like "Simple Request (Stop Breaking My Balls)" and "Shy of Indigo" showcase his talents as a funky Blues musician who's taking his art to the next level.

Every installment of "Sessions" is unique, as JP often invites different musicians to sit in and perform. Nights with JP and his band are always super-fun!

The format received a rave review from The New York Times when it premiered in New York in 1995. You ain’t seen nuttin’ like it, folks!

Music on another level...
with Drew Bordeaux
Acoustic, Rock (modern)
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Drew Bordeaux has many fans. 12 Grapes is one of his biggest.

Whether playing solo with an acoustic guitar or screaming Hendrix-style riffs on a violin, Drew never fails to captivate and entertain an audience. His original tunes weave classic Rock and Blues with today's Pop and Alternative styles to create music that is rich, moving, and relentlessly catchy.

NY music reviewer Kevin Johnston wrote, "His guitar work is the real deal... A lot of players have forgotten what the rock solo is for, but Drew knows and he uses it to take the music to a new level. And just to make sure you stay interested, he switches to electric violin."

Despite all of his achievements, Drew is first and foremost a songwriter. He has composed dozens of songs performed at an impressive list of venues. Drew's first EP, "Live Your Way", has deeply personal lyrics and catchy melodies.

Mardi Gras Celebration with the Tin Pan Band
Jazz
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Tin Pan connotes a world of jazz, blues and American popular song. The band has created a rabid following by playing music that resonates powerfully because its intention is pure - to make people dance, smile and conjure with the spirit of music itself. On their new album, Hound's Tooth, the band has perfected their sonic vision - effortless, wondrous and festive, feeling much like, as the band describes themselves, Ray Charles and Tom Waits at a Bourbon Street Parade. With Jesse Selengut on trumpet, lead vocals and compositions, Clifton Hyde on guitar and hollerin', Stefan Zeniuk on reeds and boy soprano vocals, and Peter "Baby Hands" Maness on bass and some singin', Tin Pan evokes everything from Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong to Irving Berlin and Hoagy Carmichael. The Tin Pan Band was founded in 2006 by Selengut, a long time New York based musician, and the curator of the Williamsburg Jazz Festival.

Joy Kills Sorrow
Bluegrass, Americana, and Alternative
Common Ground Folk Series @ Lewisboro Library
15 Main Street
South Salem, NY   See Map
Joy Kills Sorrow’s sound is born from the best of two worlds. They start with a base of time-honored timbres and techniques, yet fashion original songs and arrangements that reflect a love of indie-rock and new folk. While the former has made Joy Kills Sorrow proven favorites with the bluegrass circuit, their emphasis on writing arrangements transcending narrow genres allows them to reach wider audiences. Emma Beaton‘s haunting vocals and the ensemble’s rootsy variation on Americana is just as apt to appeal to fans of Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes as committed Stanley Brothers enthusiasts.

Grammy and WC Handy award-winning bluesman Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson's style features a blistering blend of sharp single note leads with powerful chordal self-accompaniment, which has influenced such further influential guitarists as Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler. After serving an apprenticeship alongside the late Magic Sam, from whom he inherited the west-side guitar-style throne, Luther gained an international reputation as a guitarist & vocalist in Muddy Waters' band. By the late '70s, Luther developed his own signature style, characterized by a strong rhythmic component and deeply moving vocal phrasings. You may also remember seeing Luther featured in the legendary Blues Brothers movie ... here's your chance to see him in the Towne Crier's intimate & respected setting!
