Breeding Birds and ButterfliesEsopus Bend Nature Preserve
meet at Saugerties Village Beach
Saugerties, NY   See Map
The Esopus Creek Conservancy and John Burroughs Natural History Society are co-sponsoring a guided nature walk at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve in Saugerties on Saturday, June 23, 2012, to observe summer breeding birds and butterflies. We will identify birds by sight and sound as we explore the Preserve’s woodlands, wetlands, and meadow, pausing along the way to observe the diversity of plant and animal life that inhabit the Preserve. As the morning temperatures rise, we will focus our attention on early summer butterflies active in the Preserve at this time of the year.

Meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on US Rte. 9W, just north of the Esopus Creek bridge, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties.

Bring binoculars, insect repellant, and field guides if you have them. Be prepared for potentially wet/muddy trails, tall grass, and dress according to weather conditions. Light rain often makes for excellent birding and nature observation, but will inhibit or eliminate most butterfly activity. Heavy rain will cancel the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged, but please do not bring pets.

Contact the field trip leaders, Henry Halama henryhalama@verizon.net or Steve Chorvas schorvas@verizon.net for additional information or directions. This joint ECC/JBNHS Environmental Education walk is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required, but recommended in the event of unforeseen changes or cancellation. For additional information about upcoming ECC Nature Walks and Paddles, please visit www.esopuscreekconservancy.org.

Peekskill, NY   See Map
At the break for the Clifton Anderson Quartet, Director Muta'Ali and producer NJ Frank will show the trailer and discuss "Life's Essentials with Ruby Dee", a documentary film about LOVE, ART and ACTIVISM.

The film, still in progress, will be a fitting tribute to a couple whose work has touched the pulse of society, from Purlie Victorious, to their PBS series, With Ossie and Ruby, to Raisin in the Sun, to Do the Right Thing, to Ruby's Academy Award nominated performance in American Gangster. The film will focus on the love and life story of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as told through the lens of Ruby's grandson-the film’s director-Muta'Ali.

The Life's Essentials team is no stranger to filmmaking, with several documentary feature films between them. "Our goal is to make the most beautiful film possible," said Director Muta'Ali. And to make this a people-funded production as is fitting for the couple.

Viewing limited to the audience for the Clifton Anderson Quartet.

Aashish Khan, one of India's greatest living Sarode players, will join Ray Spiegel’s Indo-jazz Ensemble for a very special show. The Ray Spiegel Ensemble melds Indian classical and folk music with jazz, Latin, blues and funk. They have two releases on the Simlahouse label, "Sum and Kali" and "Raga Jazz".

Aashish, son of maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and grandson of the legendary Allauddin Khansahib, was a master of sarode by the age of twenty. A pioneer in the world music genre, he has worked with such diverse musicians as George Harrison, Ringo Star, Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar, and the Philadelphia String Quartet, to mention a few.

Ray Spiegel, a leading tabla player, studied under the percussion masters Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain and has appeared with musicians Ustad Alla Rakha, Sultan Khan, The Grateful Dead, Zakir Hussain & the Rhythm Experience, Ravi Shankar, and Bon Jovi among others.

The ensemble includes Ira Coleman on bass and Tani Tabbal on drums.

But let's be clear: Mopco is not affiliated with any state Lottery games.
