![]() Sunday 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm | Maggie Seligman Acoustic, Folk/Traditional, and Americana | Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe 40 West Market Street Red Hook, NY See Map |
| My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music. | ||

In concerts Barb delivers a rich mosaic of contemporary folk, drawing from celtic balladry, early rock, old-time gospel, and her own unique style, all carried with a crystalline voice and skillfully played guitar. Bedford Chamber Concerts presents Angel Oratorio, an original choral and orchestral work, composed by renowned musician Anthony Newman.
Lloyd Moss of WQXR praised the Angel Oratorio calling it, “… a work in the time-honored tradition of baroque masters, that in its brilliant harmonies speaks eloquently to todays audiences. I have no doubt it will be a part of our timeless musical literature.”Conceived in three parts, the dramatic structure of the composition rests in texts of the Torah, the New Testament and the Book of Enoch, as well as the writings of John Milton, William Shakespeare and William Blake. With these texts as a foundation, the music explores our historic and iconic understanding of angels in their many incarnations. The Oratorio will be performed by the Musica Antiqua, New York chorus and the Bedford Chamber Ensemble conducted by Mary Jane Newman. The room is cozy, the people friendly, and the performances are always top-notch. Musical styles range from folk to blues, from rock to ragtime. And it's all only $5! The "stage" is a big, comfortable rug in the middle of the room with four chairs arranged in a circle. The audience is seated around the outside and is never more than a few feet from the musicians. This format provides the intimacy of a living room and allows the musicians to interact in ways that aren't possible in the traditional coffeehouse format. for further information
![]() Saturday 7:30 pm | Sloan Wainwright, Sharon Goldman Singer-Songwriter, Pop/Soft Rock, and Folk/Traditional | Common Ground @ South Church South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway Dobbs Ferry, NY See Map |
Folk-pop artist Sloan Wainwright belongs to a musical dynasty of impossibly gifted singer-songwriters. Sloan’s incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but her dramatically voiced rendition of her original songs. She’s folk-influenced, obviously (you can’t grow up in the First Family of Folk and not be, one imagines), but the real star here is her voice. Warm and smoky and smooth, it makes her earthy, ominous lyrics seem all the more intense. Defying standard categorization, singer/songwriter Sloan Wainwright consistently demonstrates her easy command of a variety of American musical styles — pop, folk, jazz and blues — held together by the melodious tone of her rich contralto. The end result, a unique and soulful hybrid. Sharon Goldman is a New Jersey-based singer-songwriter with over a decade of writing songs and four albums under her belt. The coffeehouse consists of an open mic with a featured performer. Admission is $6 ($5 for Folk Guild Members). The featured performer on May 12 is Stuart Kabak. It could be said that if Harry Chapin and Joni Mitchell were to have a love child he would probably sound like Stuart Kabak. Listen to the songs and you will hear the razor sharp story telling lyrics reminiscent of Harry and the lush alternate tuning melodies Joni is known for. This artful combination has won Stuart numerous songwriting awards of various stripes both regionally and nationally including no less than eight from the Great American Song Contest. Five of his songs have been recorded by Fast Folk. Stuart also has his own CD, No Matter Where You’re Going, which has received radio airplay. Hudson Valley Folk Guild

"The highlight September performance in Paris was tenor saxophonist Ray Blue. This former member of Sun Ra's Arkestra and student of Ornette Coleman set the Caveau des Oubliettes on fire...His music was fresh and captured the mind without straying away too long from the strongest groove." Downbeat MagazineRay's newest CD, "Berries and Blues" serves you the fruits of his music-a story is told by merging jazz, blues and African folk rhythms. The players chosen for this project are brilliant musicians who came together on the gig in Paris, with a chemistry and sound that was nothing less than exceptional. Ray has preformed with Steve Turre, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, T.K. Blue, Bob Gaddy, Wycliff Gordon and Benny Powell. He plays with The Spirit of Life Ensemble and tours with The Ray Charles Show. The Ray Blue Sound is at once big and warm, dynamic and romantic, nostalgic and modern. It's "Blue Jazz". FOR THIS SHOW, SEATING STARTS AT 8:30, THE SHOW AT 9:00 PM Admission: $10
