Orlando Marin, a contemporary of such greats as Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodriguez, is the only orchestra leader from New York’s golden era of mambo who still performs regularly.
Orlando formed his first band, Eddie Palmieri and his Orchestra and, since then, has played with several different bands and has performed in the famous Palladium Ballroom. In 1997, Latin music historiographer Max Salazar presented Orlando a plaque in recognition of nearly five decades of uninterrupted contribution to Latin music. In January 2003, Orlando was invited by Latin Jazz station, WPFW, by the Arlington County (Virginia) Cultural Arts Division, and by the Latin American Folk Institute to do a live concert in Washington at The Spectrum Theater and in 2006, Congressman Jose E. Serrano honored Orlando as “The Last Mambo King,” for his continuing to provide Latin American music and his willingness to devote time to helping the less fortunate. Admission $10 | ||

MOPCO brings its unique brand of improv to Proctors -- Friday nights at 8:00pm. Created by Kat Koppett in association with Freestyle Repertory Theatre in New York, Spontaneous Broadway is a virtouso evening of musical improv. The audience submits titles of "songs that have never been written". In a fictional "backer's audition", these titles inspire improvised songs in act one. In act two, the audience's favorite song serves as the basis of an entire (45 minute) Broadway musical, complete with costumes and set. The performers scheduled for the evening so far are The Sunburst Brothers, Seth Rogovoy (best selling author of the book -Bob Dylan-Prophet, Mystic and Poet) who will have copies of his book on hand as well as be performing, Brian and Fran Hollander with The Saturday Night Bluegrass Band, The Princes of Serendip and Charles Lyonhart with George “The Mighty” Quinn, T.G. Alva Nelson, a multi-faceted musician, has performed & recorded with Lightnin' Hopkins, Kirk Whalum, and Regina Belle. He has been musical director for "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Violet", and "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" and produced Dorothy Leigh's "A Second Chance", for which he wrote three songs. "Soul Eyes" is Alva Nelson's latest jazz piano release. Nelson has received three "Meet the Composer" Grants; won 1st Place in the Composers' Guild Composition Contest with "Synonymous Dichotomy" ('83), "Buster's Bounce" ('85) and "Tranquil Jubilation ('88); and was selected as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Throughout the 1990's, Nelson performed, arranged, and orchestrated music for the Boys Choir of Harlem, including engagements at Carnegie Hall & Alice Tully Hall with Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle; Hubert Laws and the St. Luke's Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta. Keyboardist Dave Keyes has been on the Blues scene for over 20 years, performing with some of the most important figures in Blues, Roots and Folk music like Popa Chubby, Larry Campbell (Levon Helm, Bob Dylan), Gladys Knight and the late, great Lou Rawls. Dave won the Blues Foundation's International Blues Competition and appears at Blues Festivals throughout the world. For 6 years, he was conductor for the Broadway hit "Smokey Joe's Cafe" and is a featured performer on their Grammy-winning soundtrack album. Dave's newest CD "Roots in the Blues" ranges from "rollicking boogie" to soulful R&B, Zydeco, Country Blues and some solo Gospel piano thrown in for good measure.
