Thursday 7:30 pm | The 9th Annual Lady Got Chops Women's Music and Arts Festival with Kim Clarke, in conjunction with Women (in) Jazz Jazz | BeanRunner Cafe 201 S. Division Street @ Esther Peekskill, NY See Map |
Nine years ago, Kim Clarke, bassist extraordinaire, who has been included in the Who's Who In the Performing Arts, Bass Player Magazine, Guitar Player Magazine, and several books on Women in Jazz, was called to sub for Eric Lemon at the Jazz Spot, a new club in Brooklyn. Owner, Lillithe Meyers, surprised to meet Clarke, asked her point blank "Where are all the female musicians?” Having toured many years with Kit McClure and her all women Big Band, Clarke knew plenty and from that chance encounter The Lady Got Chops Women's Month Music and Art Festival was born. "I produce this festival to feature and mentor women performers and bandleaders, to give 'sidepersons' a chance to be heard and recognized for their valuable contributions to the Arts, and to spread the history of the great women musicians who preceded them." Donate (tax deductible) to support the festival at http://womeninjazz-nyc.org/ The BeanRunner Cafe celebrates Women's History Month.

Ian started playing drums at 6 years of age joined his first band at 14. By the time he finished high school. He was writing his own songs and playing in three different bands. Playing drums in one, singing in another and being the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist in his first all original band. After spending due time in Los Angeles, Memphis, Nashville and New York City developing his songwriting chops, learning the ropes and working on his own sound by playing in a variety of bands from Garage/Alt-Country to Ambient and basic college rock from the 80's. Along the way, he discovered a melodic style which was from the first waves of rock-n-roll, traditional country, Delta blues, Rhythm-n-Blues and Folk. There was a distinct power to a simple melody with a powerful lyric. He made his way through Memphis again. But, this time as a solo performer. He wanted to feel the rhythm of the area. He indulged deeply in the musical history of the region, The "crossroads".

Although it's been 10 years since his passing, the music of George Harrison lives on. Known as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison was only 15 when he joined the group and, although Lennon and McCartney were "the" songwriters, George wrote some of the most legendary Beatle's songs of all time: "Something", "Here Comes the Sun", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Taxman" to name a few. It was Harrison who first embraced Indian mysticism in the mid 60's, bringing to pop culture the sound of sitar music. His 1971 "Concert for Bangladesh" with Ravi Shankar was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. With 11 solo albums to his name, George left behind an impressive legacy as a solo artist. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. The evening will be hosted by singer/songwriter Steve Chizmadia, and will feature Julie Corbalis, Chris Corbalis, Eric Puente, Paul Silverman, Seth Slater and other friends. **Free Admission**

"With an identifiable sound and tasteful versatility, guitarist, singer, composer James Popik has made a successful career covering a diverse range of roots music. After touring the Northeast w/Los Lonely Boys, backing up Rock & Roll hall of famer Bernie Worrell at the Sourland Festival, and an appearance opening for the Jerry Garcia Band as well as a featured spot at the Cape May Singer Songwriter festival, 2010 turned out to be a breakout year for Popik. 2011 promises more. 'Love & Stone' has been selected for the Alternate Root's Sampler CD, a new disc of fresh material will be released in March, a return to Cape May and a featured spot at MMC15, a billing w/legend Dave Mason (April 8, Tarrytown Music Hall,) and a friday evening spot at Musikfest in Bethlehem are a few highlights. Of Popik's music, Gary Allen, drummer for Charlie Daniel's, JJ Cale says, "sounds like when bands could play.....and did."
