Golden Notebook Salon
with Bar Scott
Kleinert James Gallery
Tinker Street west of the village green
Woodstock, NY   See Map
Every month, our wonderful local bookstore hosts a salon and I'll be reading and singing that night. My book, The Present Giver, comes out in February, so I'm excited to share a piece of it with the audience. The price for the event is $10. They'll be light fare, wine, and several readers reading. I'll update this info when I know who the other writers will be.

SCREWS DEBUT
with THE SCREWS
Rock (classic), Rock (progressive)
Hyde Park Brewing Company
Ruote 9
Hyde Park, NY   See Map
Showcase performance for the area's newest trio. S W Ross, Karl Allweier and Steve Marnell play while you dance around and your friends stand there and drink.

Original materials and yes, covers. But not just any covers. Stuff by the best song writers from five decades. Rock, pop, R&B and even TV themes. These guys play some of the songs you had on LP's and 45's and forgot.

They sing in tune, play in time, like harmony, solo smart (without too much wanking). And they're good players. Plus, they'll usually draw a decent crowd of people who like to rock out.

from a Chronogram Album Review 11/10:

As Loose Strife / Tight Grief spools out, stylistic vocal nods abound; Tim Buckley’s elastic, acrobatic croon; Antony Hegarty’s dramatic quaver; Scott Walker’s burnished baritone. Deft acoustic guitar work provides the bedrock throughout, with occasional atmospheric background brushstrokes of tabla, melodica, soft piano, and keening electric guitar. Antecedents aplenty, but the vision and delivery are idiosyncratic and completely Murphy’s own; a welcome, refreshingly original take on the unvanquished troubadour. Peekskill, NY   See Map
"A pianist with a crystalline touch, but a penchant for avant gardism" (New York Times)

Of Armenian parentage, pianist/composer Armen Donelian's masterful playing is rooted in Classical, Jazz and Middle Eastern studies and characterized by a boundless source of creative ideas. Armen has performed in 23 countries as a featured solo pianist, leader of his own quintet and trio, and with Jazz legends including Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Paquito D'Rivera, Mongo Santamaria and Billy Harper.

Without force or persuasion, Donelian invites listeners to join him in personal and reflective explorations. But according to one critic, "don't underestimate his ability to swing hard and throw punches."

Clark, professor of bass at Berklee College of Music, and Schuller, son of noted composer Gunther Schuller and a New York City-based bandleader, have been Donelian's band-mates for six years. The Trio's repertoire includes originals and standards from their recent CD, Oasis.

The police composite sketch is one of the most crucial investigative tools in law enforcement and is developed during a composite session-an intense display of communication and art in which the words of a victim are transformed into the features of a suspect.

Stephen Mancusi was the senior forensic artist for the New York City Police Department for 25 years. He has been featured in many publications including the New York Times and London Sunday Telegraph. Stephen has appeared on numerous television programs including the History Channel's MysteryQuest, ABC's 20/20, New York Views, Discovery Channel, Pro 7 German Television, and National Geographic. His artwork has also been exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This presentation will help demystify this intriguing science as well as introduce the audience to forensic art as an art form.

Stephen Mancusi is the author of the recently released book "The Police Composite Sketch" published by Humana Press.

David Stone: The Johnny Cash Experience is a broadway-quality show that plays predominantly to a new generation of fans too young to have known the real thing in its zenith.

David Stone: The Johnny Cash Experience is the only Johnny Cash Tribute ever to be selected by the State of California (even over Johnny's original band) to play the 40th anniversary commemoritive concert at San Quentin State Prison on February 24, 2009, celebrating the historic performance of Johnny Cash at the facility in 1969.

The mission of David Stone: The Johnny Cash Experience is simple: to be an accurate, note-for-note, authentic representation of The Johnny Cash Show with dignity, and not cheap "impersonation."

David Stone: The Johnny Cash Experience takes the audience through the late country legend's career, covering Early Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash & June Carter, and the Folsom Prison Concert Era.

David Stone is a Philadelphia born singer/songwriter who has been singing the songs of Johnny Cash nearly all of his life. Inspired by the Man In Black’s ABC television show as a young boy, Stone learned to play guitar and sing in Cash’s unique style. He started the show 4 years ago, to an enthusiastic response from fans all over the East Coast.

Stone's rendition of Johnny Cash observes a strict authenticity and dignity in conveying the music that made Johnny Cash an icon of American Country. Those who see his performance will know what it must have been like to see the real Johnny Cash in concert -- his voice, mannerisms, and his band are wholly true to the legend. Stone also writes songs in the same style of the late Johnny Cash.

Combine Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass and James Brown, and you get LA's signature style - "old school romance" and fiery funk! His unique registry, being a bass/baritone singer, brings passion and fire to the romantic songs that are an important part of his musical experience.

The fervor and spiritual connections felt by his audiences is matched only by his ability to become "one" with his soulful, heart pounding funk. A celebratory aura is seen in his outlook on life and is evident in his performances.

LA has performed with the legendary Intruders as well as on many "Motown Review" assignments. He is currently the bass/ baritone singer and co-founder of "Tradition", a wonderful "classic soul" cover singing group.

LA has been a radio personality on his own "Quite Storm" show on 91.1 WOSS in New York and has been seen in commercials, and on documentaries for public and commercial television.

"Doesn't believe in cookie-cutter almost-country music; determined to create his own style - Creating songs with just heart, a good time, and a little wisdom for good measure, Chuck is a man of determination and endurance. He invites us on his road of personal discovery, and it appears to be a trip where the songwriter is actively pulling all of these influences and ideas out of the atmosphere surrounding him, and with grit and guts, molds them into a legacy of cool delivery, a breath of fresh air, and a couple of nods to nostalgia.

Harp and acoustic guitar duo, The Callen Sisters, play rootsy, yet ethereal alternative folk, laced with delicious pop hooks and the kind of glorious vocal harmony that only siblings can achieve.

Born in the quiet art center of Westport, Massachusetts and currently living in NYC's backyard, Beth and Jessa have been bandmates since childhood. They formed The Callen Sisters band in NYC in 2006 after graduating from SUNY Purchase. Jessa and Beth's '07 self-released debut "The Callen Sisters" has won them fans, accolades and radio play, most notably in Harp Magazine and on Radio BBC in Wales. Their new songs speak of love, abandonment, fathers and daughters, London, San Francisco, canyons and even body image. The songs are laced with delicious pop hooks, lots of harmonies, and textured arrangements. Their 2nd CD, "No Shelter", has just been released. Join us for an inspiring, romantic and memorable Valentine's Day dinner with The Callen Sisters.
