MOPCO brings its unique brand of improv -- Friday nights at 8:00pm.

Created by Kat Koppett in association with Freestyle Repertory Theatre in New York, Spontaneous Broadway is a virtouso evening of musical improv.

The audience submits titles of "songs that have never been written". In a fictional "backer's audition", these titles inspire improvised songs in act one. In act two, the audience's favorite song serves as the basis of an entire (45 minute) Broadway musical, complete with costumes and set.

The format received a rave review from The New York Times when it premiered in New York in 1995. You ain’t seen nuttin’ like it, folks!

LEON REDBONE
Acoustic, Americana
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Although Leon Redbone's iconic guise of white fedora, jacket and dark sunglasses has been thoroughly satirized, it's easy to overlook what a genuinely gifted artist he remains. His love affair with tunes from the turn-of-the-19th/20th-century, flapper-era radio ditties, depression-spawned ragtime and WWII folk-jazz is as contagious as a good giggle. Opportunities for this unlikely figure to impose himself on pop culture have been plentiful: his network debut on Saturday Night Live in 1976, making him a cult classic; the wise, animated snowman in Elf (his duet on Baby, It's Cold Outside served as the picture's theme song); TV title tunes to Mr Belvedere and Harry & The Hendersons; the homespun beer jingle This Bud's for You; the Getting To Know You voice on a series of Chevrolet ads; etc. It's easy to get lost in his stage exploits, and overlook what a truly fine player he is – fingerpicking with a ragtime bounce or jumping between chords with the grace of a card sharp.

SLOAN WAINWRIGHT
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Folk-pop artist Sloan Wainwright belongs to a musical dynasty of impossibly gifted singer-songwriters. Her family tree (brother and folk-music luminary Loudon Wainwright, sister-in-law Kate McGarrigle, nephew Rufus Wainwright, nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche) reads like a who's who of contemporary folk music. Sloan's incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but her dramatically voiced rendition of her original songs. "She's folk-influenced, obviously (you can't grow up in the First Family of Folk and not be, one imagines), but the real star here is her voice. Warm and smoky and smooth, it makes her earthy, ominous lyrics seem all the more intense." Defying standard categorization, singer/songwriter Sloan Wainwright consistently demonstrates her easy command of a variety of American musical styles ~pop, folk, jazz and blues~ held together by the melodious tone of her rich contralto. The end result, a unique and soulful hybrid.

Since the last millennium the artistry of David Reed (aka Dr. Easy)has been earning respect from audiences and critics alike throughout the northeast USA, Europe and the Caribbean. A founding member of the seminal jam rock band, Max Creek in 1971, Reed has since developed into a delightful fingerstyle acoustic guitarist & multi-instrumentalist (ever heard a 'Reggae Banjo' or a conch shell 'TuTu'?), explorational singer/songwriter, way-cool whistler and seasoned performer. The good "Dakta" brings a smile to the face and a tap to the toe of young and old with his sensational blend of rockin' NewFolk, rompin' ragtime, snappy country blues, inspired original songs and wonderous interpretations of many other popular artists' songs . . . all served up with a dash of spicy, sun-drenched Caribbean reggae & calypso.
