Esopus Bend RambleEsopus Bend Nature Preserve
Saugerties, NY   See Map
Enjoy a leisurely 2.5 mile guided nature walk exploring the preserve’s varied habitats. Migrant birds, late-season butterflies and dragonflies, and early fall colors on some of the preserve’s 35+ species of trees are some of the expected attractions at this time of the year. Meet 9:00 a.m. in the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on Rte. 9W, just north of the Esopus Creek bridge, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties. Bring binoculars if you have them, and be prepared for potentially wet/muddy trails and tall grass in the meadow. Light rain often makes for excellent nature observation, but in case of heavy rain, the walk will be cancelled. Children are welcome and encouraged, but please do not bring pets.

Contact the hike leader, Steve Chorvas (schorvas@verizon.net) for additional information or directions. This Esopus Bend Ramble, co-sponsored by the Hudson River Valley Ramble, is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required. For more information about additional HRV Ramble walks, hikes, paddles, river and estuary explorations, click on this link.

BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
"The highlight September performance in Paris was tenor saxophonist Ray Blue. This former member of Sun Ra's Arkestra and student of Ornette Coleman set the Caveau des Oubliettes on fire…His music was fresh and captured the mind without straying away too long from the strongest groove." Downbeat Magazine

Ray's newest CD, "Berries and Blues" serves you the fruits of his music-a story is told by merging jazz, blues and African folk rhythms. The players chosen for this project are brilliant musicians who came together on the gig in Paris, with a chemistry and sound that was nothing less than exceptional.

Ray has preformed with Steve Turre, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, T.K. Blue, Bob Gaddy, Wycliff Gordon and Benny Powell. He plays with The Spirit of Life Ensemble and tours with The Ray Charles Show.

The Ray Blue Sound is at once big and warm, dynamic and romantic, nostalgic and modern. It's "Blue Jazz". Hear it firsthand at his CD Release Party for "Berries & Blues".

with Joe McPhee + Trio X, Trio X, Dominic Duval, Jay Rosen
Jazz, Alternative
Chapel of Our Lady Restoration
45 Market Street
Cold Spring, NY   See Map
Among serious jazz fans, Joe McPhee is recognized as a major force in truly creative music -- among his fellow residents of the Hudson Valley, he is unquestionably far less well known. Hoping to ameliorate this situation, it is a great honor and thrill to be able to present the great Mr. McPhee and one his he finest ensembles, Trio X, to Hudson Valley audiences in the beautiful venue and Hudson River setting of the Chapel of Our Lady Restoration, on the banks of the Hudson near the Metro-North train station at 45 Market Street in Cold Spring. The concert will take place Saturday September 18 at 8 PM. Tickets will be $10 at the door for general admission, and $8 for students/seniors.

Each of the three members of Trio X -- Mr. McPhee on saxophones and trumpets, Dominic Duval on bass and Jay Rosen on drums -- are significant figures in the current downtown NYC jazz scene and are certain to astonish audiences -- both those familiar with their work, and otherwise -- at their Chapel gig.

Unique among early '70s Progressive Rock bands, this pioneering outfit actually came from a '60s English Folk background and successfully merged the two genres. The Strawbs enjoyed commercial success in the US and UK with songs like Lay Down, Part Of The Union, and Down By The Sea, and has showcased a fine array of British musicians over the years, including Sandy Denny and keyboardist Rick Wakeman (prior to joining Yes). The Strawbs continue to be led by founder/singer/songwriter Dave Cousins, hailed by the All Music Guide as possibly "...the most talented Dylan-influenced songwriter to come out of England."

with The Bereznak Brothers Band
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
This dynamic musical group is fronted by twin brothers, singer/songwriters Michael and David Bereznak. 3B seamlessly fuses together elements of 80's and 90's Rock, Heartland Rock, and current Pop/Rock. Their new CD, "ALL THINGS IN TIME", flawlessly uses their signature brand of vocal harmonies, tasteful guitar, and pop song-writing sensibility to create a "musical tour de force". Their timeless songs touch upon the issues of growing up in a small town, family strength, friendship, love, and loneliness. "If you were to mix up a little bit of The Indigo Girls, The Black Crowes, Grand Funk Railroad, The James Gang, and Bruce Springsteen in a bowl you would have the uniquely fresh sound that best describes The Bereznak Brothers Band both on CD and live on stage." The band also features Pete Peligri on drums and Martin Amidon IX on bass.

Outstanding vocals, outstanding harmony and outstanding guitar work. What more could you want?

Solas
Celtic, Acoustic, and Folk/Traditional
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Solas has emerged as the most exciting band in traditional Irish music today, and a look at the resumes of each extraordinarily talented member of the band explains the power of their chemistry. The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine says "Seamus Egan and Solas make mind-blowing Irish folk music, maybe the world's best," while the Los Angeles Times says "Solas offers a compellingly original, strikingly contemporary view of traditional Celtic sounds." Although Solas can play undiluted traditional Irish music as well as anyone alive or departed, they are always varying the mix of fire tested tradition and contemporary sensibility with an ease and naturalness that is as astonishing as their overwhelming musicianship. They transcend musical genres into the realm of pure musical expression that only a relative handful of musicians attain.

The Quarrymen

In 1956, a 15-year-old Liverpool schoolboy named John Lennon recruited five of his closest friends to join him in a skiffle and rock 'n' roll group called The Quarrymen. On July 6th 1957, the group was performing at the annual garden party of the local village church St. Peter's. A friend of John Lennon attended the performance and brought with him another pal. He felt that his two friends should meet. The friend he brought with him was a just-turned-15 lad named Paul McCartney. Creating waves on both sides of the Atlantic are the transcendental sounds of modern day one man band, Joe Driscoll. His revolutionary take on music is without boundaries. Effortlessly fusing hip-hop, reggae, soul, folk and roots rock to create a completely original and unique sound; an innovator not only for the genre defying music he creates, but for the groundbreaking way in which he performs it. A true renaissance man, Driscoll is a lone figure on stage and in the studio, yet is able to create the complete soundscape of a full band utilizing heavy vocal percussion, an array of instruments, a loop pedal, and a lot of imagination.

The legendary Tannahill Weavers, one of Scotland's premier traditional bands, play a diverse repertoire that spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians consistently garner worldwide accolades for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better ...yet continue to do just that. ~|~ "An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new." -New York Times; "Scotland's Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric! The quintet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock 'n' roll intensity or haunting introspection." -The Boston Globe; "...as close to perfect as it gets in an imperfect world." -Sing Out!
