Margaret Bernstein
Singer-Songwriter
Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
New York City born Margaret Bernstein is an award winning singer-songwriter, composer and flutist with a unique voice, dynamic lyrics, and a positive and compelling message. Unlike many other songwriters of the pop-rock genre, Margaret is a classically trained musician who is an accomplished instrumental performer as well as a composer. Her musical compositions, which include elements from a diverse spectrum of styles and genres, have been inspired in part by her personal experiences and travels, which include four pilgrimages to India. Her live performances are a testament to Margaret’s amazing versatility, as she quickly segues from playing a Bach Partita on her flute to passionately playing the piano on an upbeat pop song. What makes Margaret stand out, however, is not only her eclectic and interesting background and level of accomplishment as a musician, but also her ability to communicate honestly and personally with her audience at heart level through her songs and music.

Shane Murphy
Acoustic
The Spotty Dog
Warren St.
Hudson, NY   See Map
Shane Murphy (b. 1986) is an early riser, a quiet observer, a student of Spanish literature, mostly an agreeable companion. He makes the music of a modern minstrel, drawing equally from the foreign and the intimately known. Raised in rural Northern New York, between the St. Lawrence River Valley and the Adirondack Mountains, his music demonstrates a reverence for the natural landscape, without ignoring the culture of urban life and urban decay. A tenor that rises and falls in a manner reminiscent of Tim Buckley, with lyrics evidently influenced by the poetry of Whitman, Frost and W.S. Merwin, he is fully capable both of lifting you up and breaking your heart.

OPEN HEARTH, his second album, will be released on WildCat Records this winter.

Touted internationally as "the only well-know woman bassist in Jazz of her generation", New York's own Kim Clarke performs on the Acoustic Bass, Electric Upright and four and five-stringed Electric Bass Guitar.

In her 22-year tour affiliation with trombonist Joseph Bowie and his avant-jazz funk unit Defunkt, Kim wowed audiences from Iceland to Istanbul. Internationally she is noted as "at home in the Ron Carter School of HardBop" and "a dynamic Woman in Jazz."

Ms Clarke has been included in the Who's Who In the Performing Arts, Bass Player Magazine, Guitar Player Magazine, Germany's Jazzdimensions Online Magazine, a number of European magazines and several books on Women in Jazz. In 1997, Clarke and friend Rob Scheps formed the MAGNETS. In 2000 the band recorded "MAGNETS! Live at the Earshot Jazz Festival" in Seattle which Kim co-produced with long-time Defunkt bandmate, trumpeter John Mulkerin.

Enjoy food, drink, and JAZZ.........Legend has it the ghost of a murdered socialite comes around waiting for a train she never caught. The menu focuses on comfort food like burgers, pot pie and meatloaf. There’s outdoor dining in summer, but live music, a raw bar and a fireplace inside the 1893 building mean year-round popularity.

By the time Ben was nineteen, Segovia funded a full scholarship for him to continue his music studies in Spain. The rest, as they say, is history.

CHRIS TRAPPER's organic understanding of classic pop melody is infectious; his on-stage persona is warm and inclusive; his songs speak to the heart and to everyday experiences. Audience members seem to particularly appreciate the lighthearted moments with the ukulele. Chris is perhaps most known for his original song This Time, the #1 selling tune on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for August Rush. Original frontman for beloved '90s alternative rock band, the PUSH STARS, Chris Trapper is equally sure-footed in his solo career with original tunes on 5 solo CDs, a variety of film and TV placements. Chris Trapper's ability to craft songs that are both elegant and accessible is evident on each CD in his deep Discography. There is a smart, honest quality to the lyrics that never panders. :|: T.Jay had been pursuing a career as a professional baseball player - playing gigs on the side to raise a little extra money. It wasn't long before crowds started to grow and word started to spread.

Inspired by the great Jazz singers Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee as well as Soul and R&B artists James Brown and Tina Turner, Nikki Armstrong has a voice that "could melt gold", as one critic writes. Nikki has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Melvin Sparks and the Great Les Paul. For the past few years, Nikki has been hosting her own radio show, "Blues in the Grooves", every Wednesday afternoon on WFDU, 89.1FM. "The blues as Nikki sings them come mixed with Jazz, Pop, and Folk Rock, with a warm, rich voice... from intimate growls and passionate whispers to long haunting ballad lines, and a sparkling sense of fun!" (Michael Lydon, Rolling Stone Magazine). For the past 10 years, Nikki has performed regularly all around the Tri-State area including BB Kings, The Bitter End and Birdland in NYC.

Join us as we welcome Nikki Armstrong and her band to our 12 Grapes stage.
