Chris Ricketts and Mark Willshire
Singer-Songwriter, Folk/Traditional
Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
Chris Ricketts is a talented singer/songwriter from Portsmouth currently studying folk and traditional music at Newcastle University. Having been 'on the scene' from around the age of 15 and having received rave reviews from a host of musicians/journalists, Chris is already somewhat of a gigging veteran and decided to team up with bassist Mark Willshire in the summer of 2009.

The pair complement each other in a somewhat unorthodox manner- Chris' traditional guitar and vocal structures being interspersed with Mark's big, almost funk-like basslines. The combination creating a fresh take on a genre often written off before it has been given the chance it deserves.

With their album 'Simple Folk' Out Now with dates to support it following a short tour of the USA it should be a good year for the duo.

LOS STRAITJACKETS, guest host Unsteady Freddie
Rock (classic)
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Los Straitjackets has been making its brand of raucous, instrumental rock since 1994, and have become known as one of the most dynamic and skillful instrumental bands on the planet. Their renowned live show is filled with mind-bending guitar theatrics and group choreography. ...and, don't forget the wrestling masks each band member wears onstage. Right before the band's first gig - back when they were still just The Straitjackets - Amis pulled out a bag of wrestling masks he'd bought in Mexico City. The Los Straitjackets were born. In the past few years, this gimmick has been brought full circle as the band's last two gigs in Mexico City have been in front of stadium-sized crowds. The band's music can be heard in on soundtracks for TV shows including Malcolm in the Middle, and at least 10 feature films including Meet the Parents, Harriet the Spy, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Two Days in the Valley. They are also a favorite of NBC funny man Conan O'Brien.

Karen Davis
Acoustic, Rock (50's-60's)
Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
hey're a duo - heavy on the acoustic and heavy on the rock, with a sprinkling of psychedelia for spice. Karen's versatile voice handles everything from 60s rock to her own edgy originals with power and dynamism. She loves to belt it out, but can also sing sweet and soft. Same goes for her guitar playing - lots of rhythm, lots of speed; but she also composes pastoral tunes showing her folk and prog-rock roots. Lead guitarits Joe Pla adds wonderful colors. His style is retro - ranging from mod to psychedelic. Karen and Joe have been playing together for 2 years, and have travelled the East Coast from Massachusetts to Virginia. The hit festivals, house concerts, coffee houses, private parties, film series and church concerts. They're doing pre-production on new tunes, and should have a new 8 song CD out by next summer.

With Demetri's Help was founded on June 14th, 2010, in honor of Demetri Demeropoulos. At 18 years of age, Demetri waged a heroic battle against cancer that first attacked his spinal cord, and, later, his brain. For two years Demetri went toe to toe with this terrible disease never allowing the constant physical and mental setbacks to interfere with his positive approach to life. He fought with an amazing spirit that touched all of those who knew him.

With Demetri's Help seeks to carry on Demetri's enduring message: to find the good in every situation, no matter how bad it may seem. With Demetri's Help has two missions: to financially support research into spinal cord and brain cancer, and to assist in the donation of unused medical supplies so that they may be put to good use.

On August 1st, With Demetri's Help will be hosting their 1st fundraiser featuring performers from Demetri's community and circle of close friends.

Individually, these veteran pickers have been winning honors (too numerous to mention here) since the early '70s. They have also toured with the likes of Bill Keith, Doc & Merle Watson, the Country Gentleman, Norman Blake and, of course, The McKrells -- playing alongside these other legends and/or opening for them on stages from country festivals to Carnegie Hall. Together, in this new progressive bluegrass band, they play fast and fun, but their compositions also express the entire range of human emotion.

Special Night: Singer/Songwriter Showcase
with Fred Gillen, Jr., Rebecca Loebe
Singer-Songwriter
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Gillen's musical influences range from Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie to Queen and Elton John. From James Brown and Stevie Wonder to The Clash and Johnny Cash. Gillen is a folk singer and a rocker, a roots musician and a modernist, as at home playing washboard or acoustic guitar as playing with drum loops and a whisk broom. Whatever the instruments and genre, he's always been attracted to music which is reckless and in-the-moment.

Tonight, Fred is joined by singer/songwriter Rebecca Loebe. On tour in the US and Europe the past few years, Becca has gotten rave reviews for her high-energy performances, weaving together skillful, emotional songwriting, folk storytelling and "whimsical comedy for the ADHD generation." At a very young age, she's already shared the stage with greats such as Mary Chapin Carpenter (at a 6,000 seat ampetheatre in Atlanta), Ellis Paul, Sophie B. Hawkins, Emerson Hart, Ellis Paul, Girlyman & The Bacon Brothers.

He has played with blues greats such as Son House, Mance Lipscomb, Fred McDowell, Jim Brewer, Rev. Gary Davis and many others.

Ernest Leroy Hawkins was born in Pittsburgh PA in 1947. In the '50's he had a paper route, a beagle and a Roy Rodgers harmonica (which he still has somewhere).

"Man, I love Ernie Hawkins. Each disc impresses me more and more. There are very few individuals who play this stuff and make it real. Fingerstylist Hawkins is one of the great joys of guitar. He is plain and simple, a master. --John Heidt Vintage Guitar

This Austin-based Texas native is blessed with a distinctive, vibrant voice that is the perfect vehicle for his soul-baring ballads, burning anthems and driving, straight-ahead rock 'n' roll. Jimmy's self-penned material earned him the Songwriter of the Year award (along with 4 others) at the 1995 Kerrville Music Awards. When LaFave covers others' songs, such as those of Bob Dylan, they fit like his own broken-in boots, exhibiting his own character as much as that of their maker.
