A fresh approach to playing the guitar. Leave chord charts and positions, traditional tunings, and theory home for the day, and play from a fresh new point of view!

We cover new chord voicings, playing up the neck, using capos and tools in creative ways...playing leads, as well as playing old songs with new tricks. Break out of the box, or just get out of that rut, with your songwriting! All types of guitars and basses are addressed, and all levels of players are welcome.

This time around, the workshop will take us through playing an instrumental song from start to finish. You will be encouraged to start from scratch with your very own song, or play an old standby in a new way... or learn to play "Solomon."

Registration is $25; $20 for returning participants 519-598-8276

BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Combine Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass and James Brown, and you get LA's signature style - "old school romance" and fiery funk! His unique registry, being a bass/baritone singer, brings passion and fire to the romantic songs that are an important part of his musical experience.

The fervor and spiritual connections felt by his audiences is matched only by his ability to become "one" with his soulful, heart pounding funk. A celebratory aura is seen in his outlook on life and is evident in his performances.

LA has performed with the legendary Intruders as well as on many "Motown Review" assignments. He is currently the bass/ baritone singer and co-founder of "Tradition", a wonderful "classic soul" cover singing group.

LA has been a radio personality on his own "Quite Storm" show on 91.1 WOSS in New York and has been seen in commercials, and on documentaries for public and commercial television.

The band features hard–driving traditional and original acoustic music with the expert licks of National Mandolin Champion Anthony Hannigan Steve Belcher, David Cavage and Dan Shipe, Coleman Smith, Mark Morris, Craig Vance and Billy Gilmore.

"The Hickory Project is globally acclaimed. They have captivated audiences throughout Europe, both the main land and Celtic Isles, Australia and all through the US. As musical ambassadors Hickory Project is taking their music worldwide...Whether it is straight-forward traditional or a flare for the new realm in music, the Hickory Project is gaining ground 'Linking Old and New in Acoustic Music.'"

FOLK GUILD COFFEEHOUSE SERIES TO FEATURE MELISSA HOLLAND
Folk/Traditional
Unitarian Fellowship
67 south Randolph Avenue
Poughkeepsie, NY   See Map
The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild continues its 2009-2010 coffeehouse series on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Unitarian Fellowship, South Randolph Ave., Poughkeepsie. The coffeehouse performances start at 7:30 pm with an open mic format followed by the featured performer, Melissa Holland.

Melissa Holland is a singer/songwriter, flutist, and keyboardist. In each song she tells a story - reflecting personal growth and change and evoking empathy, images and pathos.

She does this with confessional, conversational and often humorous lyrics.

Her style is a mixture of pop, folk, classical, sometimes even jazz and country; She has been compared style-wise to Carol King and Laura Nyro. Her voice is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins: clear, honest and flexible; both ethereal and down to earth, as she puts it, "head in the clouds, feet on the ground".

Through the years, Jeffrey Gaines has built an emotional and trusting bond with his fans, and admits that they have sustained him from the start. Even when he was between record companies, it was his fans that propelled his live version of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" to the top of several major radio stations' charts. Growing up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jeffrey's parents were constantly playing records by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight & The Pips. Gaines found that music gave him the opportunity to transcend his quiet nature. "Being kind of shy, I wanted to put myself in a position to communicate to as many people as I could once I had my thoughts together." After amassing a fervent live following, he landed a record deal in the early '90s, which resulted in three critically-acclaimed albums. He has made appearances from Conan O'Brien to Good Morning America.

ELLIS PAUL, also special guest KATI MAC
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Ellis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990s. Ellis' charismatic, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop, and closer towards the realness of folk. Though he remains among the most pop-friendly of today's singer-songwriters - his songs regularly appear in hit movie and TV soundtracks - he has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers.

Phineas and the Lonely Leaves
with Tim Feeney
Acoustic, Pop/Soft Rock
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Phineas and the Lonely Leaves is a band which bares its sound with a reverence for simplicity. This band is a showcase for the evolution of Tim's songwriting ability which has matured into a concise, literal romantic vision. With little more than his voice, his hooks and an acoustic guitar he has managed to conjure a vibe that hints at a life full of secret struggles and recent triumphs. Nestled deep, somewhere between the vintage classic bleariness of Townes Van Zandt and Gram Parsons and contemporaries like Wilco, Death Cab for cutie, Bright Eyes, and Nada Surf, Phineas and the Lonely Leaves is the sound of a man finally realizing his gifts. Phineas and the Lonely Leaves provide a perfect soundtrack for those quiet midnight hours spent lying next to that one you love or sitting alone in the dark wondering whatever happened to that one who once owned your heart.

SONNY LANDRETH, also special guest MATT RAE TRIO
Blues, Cajun/Zydeco. Slide Guitar
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
When it comes to Sonny Landreth, even Eric Clapton is a fan: "He's probably the most underestimated musician on the planet, and also probably one of the most advanced." As if to back his words up with actions, Clapton honored Landreth with the #1 time-slot at his 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival. Their amazing guitar duet, culminating with these two greats weaving in & out of each other's improvisations, can be seen here. Mark Knopfler can also be seen praising Sonny Landreth's slide guitar playing before they perform together here. In a world where truly great guitar practitioners dot the globe like as many mountain pinnacles on our planet, Sonny Landreth's techniques seem to leave him floating artfully, impossibly above. Talent in such a rarified atmosphere seems fragile & ephemeral – leaving one resolved to appreciate it while it's here, while wishing him a long, healthy and productive life!
