SUZANNE VEGA
Acoustic, Alternative, and Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world's best-known halls. In performances devoid of outward drama that nevertheless convey deep emotion, Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice that has been described as "a cool, dry sandpaper- brushed near-whisper" and as "plaintive but disarmingly powerful." In short, Suzanne Vega's work is immediately recognizable as utterly distinct and thoughtful, and as creative and musical now as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 20 years ago.

Peekskill, NY   See Map
You can't help but get up and dance to this band!!! Jerry and the "Brothers" are one of the tightest, coolest, funky-est, baddest bands around. Whatever you do, do not miss this performance. Jerry's an accomplished singer, songwriter and bass player, influenced by the Blues and Country Music. His entree into the NYC Blues scene was by way of the now infamous Dan Lynch Blues Bar, running the Saturday afternoon jam session there. This little bar became the hub of the Blues scene in NYC. Jerry calls his time there "an education that could not be replicated." His band is comprised of a lighting-fast guitarist, killer drummer and a keyboard player who also wails on the sax.

"My mission is to write and sing great songs. A great song can touch you the way nothing else can. A great song can take complex issues and break them down so everyone can understand them." Well said, Jerry.

Let's do the time warp again at this atmospheric spot that seems to be in its own time zone. We'll be celebrating the release of Dave's "Ghost Tracks" CD which I produced and played on, with music and great food. Dan Wininger who recorded and mixed the CD will be on hand (haha) playing percussion. Let me know if you want to join a carpool to this off the beaten track but well worth the trip venue.

A charismatic singer and prolific songwriter, Red's songs are populated by hobos, flowers, telepathy, motherhood, eternity, war, peace, housework, reincarnation, insanity, rage, childhood, old age, rivers, oceans, stars and a few X boyfriends....

Red was born in New York City, but grew up in England. She cut her performing teeth playing clubs in Europe for ten years, before returning to the USA where she collaborated with the late producer Steve Burgh (John Prine, Willie Nelson, Steve Forbert), who produced her first album, "Water Planet", and introduced her to a family of East Coast folk and roots musicians, some of whom she still works with today.

Red disappeared for several years to raise 2 boys ("..I think I'm getting the hang of it now...").

She returned last year with a new Rebel Red album, "Sex, Religion, Politics", featuring guitarist Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles, Crosby, Stills and Nash) and saxophonist Erik Lawrence (Levon Helm).

After recently opening for Livingston Taylor at Cafe Lena, they were invited back to perform as headliners. Since then they have also been booked to open for Kathy Mattea. Come and see them at The Borderline before they become so famous that we will no longer be able to afford them. They will be doing a tribute to Peter, Paul, & Mary as well as some of their own beautiful compositions. Make your reservations early as this show is sure to sell out fast. They say she "has a voice like Jewel with a touch of Jazz." Cassandrea Frake's songwriting is creative, touching and uniquely original. Influences include Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, John Mayer and Nora Jones. Her song, "Like the Breeze," is a folksy, jazzy, love-tribute. The love theme runs deep in her music and even inspired her to start playing guitar. In her interview on lohud.com's The Listening Room, Cassandra said she began writing music "...to impress somebody--one of the guys I had a crush on--but that guy fell through, and the music lasted." We're glad it did.

Manhattan Transfer meets Monty Python...Robin Williams meets Bobby McFerrin...J.S. Bach meets Jimi Hendrix: Grammy-nominated vocal acrobats (and certifiable nutjobs) THE BOBS return to the Towne Crier! This original "band without instruments" has been skewering the classics, breaking all the rules and clear-cutting their own unique path in the world of vocal music for over 25 years, playing everywhere from Lincoln Center to Berlin's Passionkirche. To quote one reviewer, "...the Bobs still shine, breaking new ground each time they tunnel out of the sanitorium. The twin keys to the group's creative safe deposit box are unflagging dedication to vocal excellence and utter disregard for everything else."
