Saturday 9:00 pm | SARAH BORGES & THE BROKEN SINGLES, also RED ROOSTER (CD release party) Roots Music | Towne Crier Cafe 130 Route 22 Pawling, NY See Map |
The landscape that Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles have traversed over the past few years with her smoky, honeyed vocals and scorching guitar work is plenty varied – taking in scenes as diverse as roadhouse melancholy to unashamedly guileless romanticism, and all the way to all-out rocking punk. While Borges readily acknowledges devouring songs from recordings that were made decades before she was born, she has always offset those influences with the music of the here-and-now. Borges is "A modern-minded honky-tonker with a retro streak" (New York Times) and "a reminder of how much fun music can be" (Fresh Air, NPR). Although RED ROOSTER's roots remain firmly planted in Americana and Alt-Country, the band has created a highly original and urban-infused sound that landed them a gig at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival. "The fact that Red Rooster has managed to capture the dichotomy of modern American roots is nothing short of astounding."-Americana UK More info at the Towne Crier Cafe

All in all, it's an incredible gathering place for the community where creative workshops can take place and where you can find inspiring literature on its bookshelves and art on its walls. Alchemy is struggling now to keep its doors open, and it seems fitting that the community come together to keep Alchemy from shuttering its doors. If you haven't been to Alchemy yet, make it a point to go, and bring your appetite and a couple of friends, too. You will not be sorry. Stay tuned for more info on this rent party; it's sure to be amazing!! Alchemy's Website

Folk singer Chris Wilhelm has a voice that rings with a certain vulnerable sense of conviction. And indeed, this Boston-based singer/songwriter has seen a lot during his 16-year music career: In between his relocations from Hudson, New York to Albany and now to Boston, he has spent time busking for change in subway stations, singing open-mic nights in coffee shops, and altogether honing his delicate craft. His current songs reach a rare level of emotional urgency, steeped in a palpable sense of hope and understanding.
