with The Sugar Beats
Covers, Rock (classic). 60's-70's British & American Rock/Psychedelic
Gail's Place
150 Route 17-K
Newburgh, NY   See Map
Are they just another Classic Rock Band? No. Are they just another Tribute Band? No, but they do pay tribute to many of the 60's-70's greatest rock 'n' roll and psychedelic bands. Are they good? Good enough to be selected to be the opening act for Joe Lynn Turner and Eric Burdon & the Animals for this year's Labor Day Newburgh Annual Waterfront Festival. The city of Newburgh wondered why it took them so long to find out how great these guys are, but they found out. They're no Day Tripper's. They were singin' and dancin' on the lawn and street. Come hear why many who have already experienced the Sugar Beats say, "These guys R-O-C-K, Rock!" Get yourself ready for some Hard Knox and Durty Sox, as the Rolling Stones "Let It Bleed" album liner says. Instead of just looking for tea and sympathy, come get satisfaction in the night time at Gail's Place and see/hear for yourselves, the Sugar Beats live. If you haven't already, you'll wonder why it took you so long.

Back together again just for You and Unison, Amy Fradon and Leslie Ritter’s luscious vocal harmonies as session singers for Orleans, Rick Danko, John Sebastian and Dr. John to name a few, led to twelve year collaboration as a duo. As singer/songwriters they collaborated on six albums and reached their commercial apex nationally with their rendition of the Yes classic, "Your Move", which topped the Billboard charts and aired as a video on VH1. Joining them for this one-time, special reunion performance will be Grammy nominated producer and bassist, Scott Petito and guitarist and vocalist, Helen Avakian.

Amy & Leslie Reunion Concert!
with Amy Fradon &, Leslie Ritter, Scott Petito, Helen Avakian
Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic
Unison Arts & Learning Center
68 Mountain Rest Road
New Paltz, NY   See Map
They're back together again just for one evening at Unison. Luscious vocal harmonies made Amy Fradon and Leslie Ritter in much demand as session singers in the early 1980s. Their vocals were heard on recordings by Orleans, Rick Danko, John Sebastian, the Fabulous Rhinestones and Dr. John to name a few. On their own, the two singer songwriters collaborated on six albums during their nine years together. The duo reached their commercial apex nationally with their final album, Take Me Home, in 1994, which included Fradon and Ritter's unique renditions of the Beatles "Rain" and the Yes classic "Your Move" which topped the Billboard charts and aired as a video on VH1.

Joining them for this performance will be Grammy-nominated producer and bassist Scott Petito and guitarist/vocalist Helen Avakian.

LORI McKENNA, also, MARY GAUTHIER
Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
LORI & MARY will be on stage together as they share their stories & songs.

Lori McKenna was thrust into the limelight last year when superstar Faith Hill included three of McKenna's songs on her #1 album, Fireflies. As one Nashville reviewer put it, Lori's "fearless musical snapshots lay bare the realities of small-town life while clinging to the hope of better days." Faith Hill said "Her writing is masterful, with a pureness that is completely unaffected."

Mary Gauthier's story, strange and scary, is as compelling as her music. She has lived off the streets, sunk to the bottom of life, turned 18 behind bars, emerged from darkness and -- to completely confuse things -- won notice as a respected restaurateur ...all before writing her first song. She sold her share of the restaurant to finance Drag Queens in Limousines (1999). With that [she smiles] "all hell broke loose." Rolling Stone gave it a four-star rave, and other publications joined in on the chorus.

Slide
Celtic
Bodles Opera House
39 Main Street
Chester, NY   See Map
Slide made their first release with ‘The Flying Pig’ which brought them to many of the main stages & festivals at home and abroad; from the National Concert Hall to the Cambridge Festival, England and from the headline act of the German Folk Festival Tour to the Inerceltic Festival of L’Orient, France. Thus lending a sense of the inevitable to their winning of ‘The Best Newcomers’ award by Irish Music Magazine in 2001.

In the years that followed Slide continued to grow and develop. Unable to rid themselves of a feeling that the tradition was beginning to repeat itself, together with a keen desire for self exploration and collective innovation, a second album ‘Harmonic Motion’ was recorded. This encapsulated not only a continuation of self penned words and music but a heightened maturity in their content and delivery. So much so, that names such as Bill Whelan, Damian Dempsey, Hazel O’Connor, John Spillane, Stockton’s Wing, Danú, Niamh Parsons & The Black Family called the artists in on some musical projects of their own.

No strangers to picking up awards for individual musicianship, Slide have continued in a similar vein as a band with the recent winning of the ‘Young Musicwide Award 2006’, selected from all competing young bands by a panel of judges including Donal Lunny. This, coupled with the addition of new lead vocalist Andrew Murray, Slide are looking forward to revealing the latest chapter of one of the most interesting Irish traditional bands of modern times.

Mountainville, NY   See Map
“Uncommon Ground”, is a hot alternative bluegrass group from New York's Hudson Valley that is on a mission to flex the boundaries of traditional music. They're the complete package ... great vocals, fiery instrumental abilities and a constantly evolving repertoire of well-crafted tunes.

“Uncommon Ground” draws on the talents of Mike Kobetitsch (guitar), Sara Della Posta (vocals), Rachel Handman (violin) Wayne Fugate (mandolin) and Phil Helm (bass). Collectively, their technical precision, fertile inventiveness, surprising touches and mastery of the Bluegrass genre, give the band a distinctive, signature voice.

Storm King Art Center is a museum that celebrates the relationship between sculpture and nature. Five hundred acres of landscaped lawns, fields and woodlands provide the site for postwar sculptures by internationally renowned artists. Uncommon Ground will be performing one set from 3-4PM in the Art Center’s performance pavilion. Admisson is free!

The legendary Tannahill Weavers, one of Scotland's premier traditional bands, returns to the Towne Crier after a long absence! Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians consistently garner worldwide accolades for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better ...yet continue to do just that. "An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new." -New York Times "Scotland's Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric! The quintet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock 'n' roll intensity or haunting introspection." -The Boston Globe "...as close to perfect as it gets in an imperfect world." -Sing Out!

This month sees the triumphant return of The Organiks to B.I.'s Backstage at The Boiceville Inn in Boiceville, NY. The boys have kept busy since they opened our Thursday Night Rock 'n' Roll Dance Party last March. Bruce Katz (Gregg Allman, John Hammond, Levon Helm) and Chris Vitarello have just returned from Europe with The Bruce Katz Band, where they played festival dates with Mick Fleetwood and Ray Davies. Drummer Randy Ciarlante (The Band, Jim Weider's Honky Tonk Gurus) just returned from headlining the Peach Jam Music Festival, and sax player, Jay "King" Collins (James Hunter) has been on the road with his father-in-law, Levon Helm, playing the Newport Folk Festival and dates with Phil Lesh. These guys always have a rollicking good time at their favorite venue, and this month will be no exception. Come early for dinner and stay late dancing on the spacious dance floor. Full bar. It's all about retro-twang and classic honky-tonk...

Girl Howdy roars into town on a mission to keep the honky-tonk torch burning bright! This 6-piece combo features an all-gal frontline tearing it up on fiddle, steel guitar, piano, flat top guitar and soaring vocal harmonies, backed by a top-notch rhythm section of upright bass and drums.

Playing music from the classic honky-tonk era spanning the late 1940's to the early 1960's, Girl Howdy plays songs from such legends as Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, the Davis Sisters, Webb Pierce, as well as honky-tonk-inspired originals. Hogwild for raw twang, this band plows through their retro-based repertoire with energy, enthusiasm and utter devotion.

The roots honky-tonk mission of Girl Howdy continues, delivering tight vocal harmonies, spare yet punchy arrangements, an infectious honky-tonk groove, and above all one heck of a good time!

THE SPIRIT OF WOODY GUTHRIE
with HOPE MACHINE
Folk/Traditional
DOCKSIDE PUB
825 South Lake Boulevard
Mahopac, NY   See Map
Hope Machine is more a traveling hootenanny than a band. Steve Kirkman and Fred Gillen first worked together when Anna Canoni, Woody Guthrie's granddaughter, sought musicians to perform Woody's songs at a hootenanny celebrating Woody's birthday. These days Fred and Steve sing their own songs, Woody's songs, and any other songs which fit the spirit of the Hope Machine experience. The Hope Machine experience is a constantly evolving celebration of the Human Spirit, and acknowledgement of the wisdom of our elders, and above all the opportunity for both musicians and audience to be connected in community, and sing together. There is no cover for tonights performance. Your generosity for the performers is always appreciated. Dockside is located just 3.8 miles off the Bryant Pond Road exit of the Taconic Parkway.

Woodstock, NY   See Map
Bronx-born singer, songwriter and guitarist Charles Lyonhart has made the Woodstock area his home for years. He spent years as a performer and music critic and writer for Rolling Stone magazine and other publications. Lyonhart and his bandmates – Chris Zaloom, George Quinn and Dennis Cotton – are working on his first album in seven years.

WMS, located just down the street from the Colony, is marking its fifth year this month with a number of events, including the debut of a guitar sculpture by Rennie Cantine in front of the store. The 7-foot tall wooden Gibson SG guitar sculpture honors Ron Osenenko, who ran the shop until his sudden passing last December. He became a great friend of the musicians in town and there have been a number of tributes in his honor.

The show begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. And Woodstock Music Shop T-shirts will be given to the first 30 attendees. For more, contact the shop at (845) 679-3224.

Towne Crier Cafe

Solas has emerged as the most exciting band in traditional Irish music today, and a look at the resumes of each extraordinarily talented member of the band explains the power of their chemistry. The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine says "Seamus Egan and Solas make mind-blowing Irish folk music, maybe the world's best," while the Los Angeles Times says "Solas offers a compellingly original, strikingly contemporary view of traditional Celtic sounds." Although Solas can play undiluted traditional Irish music as well as anyone alive or departed, they are always varying the mix of fire tested tradition and contemporary sensibility with an ease and naturalness that is as astonishing as their overwhelming musicianship. They transcend musical genres into the realm of pure musical expression that only a relative handful of musicians attain.
