SING INTO JOY: Singing as Your Path to WellnessSinging is fun! And many of us miss singing together--and fun in general--these days.
But singing is so much more, and for anyone it can be a joyful path to greater physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Which is why in 2020 I created a new all-online initiative of my work through the Sunrise County Arts Institute:
Sing into Joy: Singing as YOUR path to Wellness.
As a lifelong professional singer, recording artist and voice teacher, and an arts-in-mental-health professional, I know firsthand the transformative power of song—whether a person thinks they sing well or not. Whether they can carry a tune or not, at first. In my career of over 30 years, I’ve seen how the healthy benefits of regular singing go hand-in-hand with developing vocal skills.
• Physically when we sing:
o We stand taller, and learn to release tension
o We breathe deeper, which helps our immune system, reduces the stress hormone cortisol, and increases the feel-good endorphins in our brains
o We use our whole body as our instrument
• Emotionally:
o Our moods improve, as that body chemistry and our self-esteem rise
• Mentally:
o Our memories sharpen as we learn new skills and songs
• Expressively:
o We feel confident in speaking, and communicate more clearly with others
o We share our inner selves
• Finally, there are the good vibrations. Literally. As our own harmonious sound travels through all our cells, it also goes out into the world around us.
it’s painful that during this pandemic, when we could most benefit from singing, singing together is considered dangerous, due to the transmission of those fine aerosol droplets.
So in moving my work all-online, I've expanded its vision with Sing into Joy--which will continue even when we're able to come back together to sing.
It's based
- On my experience,
- on scientific and market research,
- and having spoken with a LOT of people --who are looking for ways to reconnect with themselves and others, and with the arts; reduce stress and anxiety; explore their creativity, and express their essential being.
Our collective life is unlikely to ever to go back to pre-pandemic “normal.” People will be masking and distancing. Many if not most businesses and schools are likely to stay primarily online. But we CAN connect with each other that way. And we CAN sing anytime from the privacy of our homes.
Sing into Joy, launched in summer 2020, already has a vibrant community for its paid and free services: lessons, workshops, blog, website and social media posts. To be released in December 2020-January 2021 is "SongBytes," a subscription program of mini-lessons.
Ongoing students who are finding success and joy include not just singers and actors, but business professionals honing their speaking skills and confidence—and getting props for the transformation! Group lessons for company teams are offered as well.
The reception to Sing into Joy has been enthusiastic beyond my original dreams. I think that’s because it’s unique in linking an activity people love, with a lively way to enhance their self-care routines.
