Rockland Center for the Arts was launched in 1947 by Helen Hayes, Aaron Copeland, Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, Paulette Goddard and Burgess Meredith. The aim was "to make use of the abundant artistic talent available by offering concerts, plays, lectures, exhibitions and instruction of a caliber seldom available outside of New York City." In it's seventy years it has been graced with performances by Oscar Hammerstein II, Helen Hayes, Kurt Weill, Aaron Copeland, the Tappan Zee Concert Society, Tito Puente, John Wallowitch, Sue Matsuki & Richard Skipper, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Sam Waymon and the music of the Sephardim to name a few. It has hosted a jazz series and a chamber music series.
