Evocative Jazz, Exotic Lounge
with A Stick & A Box; Studio Stu & Brian Melick
Jazz, Alternative, and Contemporary. Evocative Jazz, Exotic Lounge
Hudson Valley Open Market
196 Main Street
New Paltz, NY   See Map
A Stick & A Box is the most basic form of jazz, interpretation, drum and bass/voice duo, a sort of, ‘Duja Vey’ (the feeling that none of this ever happened before).

This eccentric jazz duo takes the very best in classic jazz and pop, and twists and bends them into what they call ‘evocative jazz, exotic lounge’. In this ‘duo virtuosi’, nothing is sacred.....improv is rampant...lyrics are changed at will...notes and chords are bent and perverted...familiar languages are obliterated....harmonies are sweet and sour perfection, and yet, serious, sophisticated and uncompromising in execution. The is one in-tune, out-of-tune, offbeat outfit.

"A musician of multifaceted brilliance, Sandberg delivers with this live recording a masterful testament to his artistry...Indispensable ... this is a music of poetry, of humanity—arriving at a time when such things are sorely needed. It is a music that opens the mind and nourishes the soul." - Paris Move

Three-time Emmy-nominated pianist/composer Steve Sandberg plays music that masterfully blends classical, Latin, Brazilian music and jazz with the excitement of virtuosic improvisation.

Steve has toured with David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto and Ruben Blades and was musical director for Lincoln Center's Brazilfest series. He has conducted and arranged for Broadway and was lead composer and musical director for Nickelodeon's "Dora the Explorer" and "Go, Diego, Go!"

Come hear Steve’s trio take you on a vibrant musical journey including many new originals from his Dream Music Project, where he turns his listeners dreams into music!

Michael Daves and Jacob Jolliff are two of America’s premier bluegrass talents. After years of collaborating in various bands and informal settings, they have teamed up as a formidable duo featuring high lonesome vocal harmony and fiery flatpicking. Their sound is an homage to the classic guitar-mandolin “brother duets” while leaving plenty of room for improvisation and inspired left turns. They effortlessly straddle the line between hard-core traditional bluegrass and experimental forms.
