Susie Ibarra, Jake Landau, and the Rhythm In Nature Residency will hold a Community Listening Lab at PS21 on Saturday, July 15, from 9:30 AM-12 PM, followed by a community discussion.
Participants will meet at PS21 at 9:30 AM to walk as a group to the Stony Kill where Ibarra, Landau, and the Rhythm In Nature Residency attendees will offer insight into field recording practices and techniques. Attendees will make field recordings and listening to the surrounding environment, with a focus on water and bird song, using handheld Zoom Field Recorders, stereo microphones, directional microphones, and hydrophones. Community members are encouraged to bring their own headphones (cabled, not bluetooth). That evening, don’t miss the World Premiere of Ibarra’s work “Four Meditations on Impermanence” at our pavilion theater. Tickets are pay-as-you-wish! Charlie Apicella studied composition and improvisation with musical titans Yusef Lateef and Pat Martino and was trained as a historian by Archie Shepp and Dr. Billy Taylor. As a young guitarist he met his idol BB King, who offered him advice and shared some stories. He has performed concerts and recorded with jazz legends Dave Holland, Sonny Fortune, and John Blake, Jr. as well as contemporary masters Joe Magnarelli, Vic Juris, Dave Stryker, Don Braden, and Jon Herington of Steely Dan.
Charlie Apicella is the Director of Music Curriculum for The Blues and Beyond. He is an Eastman Guitars Featured Artist; a Guild Guitars Sponsored Artist; and a ZT Amplifiers Official Artist. $20 pp donation to musicians. The annual Rosendale Street Festival is BACK, boys and girls!!!!
This year, I'll be playing on the Café Stage! I'm going to have FUN, and you will, too! The festival (in case you never heard of it) is a family-friendly, two-day event that takes over Main Street and boasts a lot of stages, a whole lotta bands, over 100 of the best vendors in the Hudson Valley. There'll be parades, kids' crafts, film festivals, and lots of yummy eats! This is a completely volunteer-run event and proceeds go to supporting the music departments of the Kingston, New Paltz, and Rondout Valley School Districts. | "Thanks to impermanence, everything is possible" – Thich Nhat Hanh
Composer/percussionist Susie Ibarra is joined by Tashi Dorji, Phyllis Chen, and area percussion groups in the premiere of the multi-ensemble version of “Four Meditations on Impermanence,” a meditation on forests conceived and developed at PS21. Inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh’s quote, Ibarra presents four pieces focused on the sonic world of four elements – metal, skin, wood, and water. The concert highlights a full day of community-wide, multidisciplinary engagement including a participatory performance along the Stony Kill, a musical procession through the forest, sound mapping, and visual and movement projects, all free and open to all. In addition to the performance, Ibarra will lead a Rhythm in Nature workshop, where she will offer insights and instruction into field recording practices and techniques. Christopher Kienle is a classical guitarist from the Hudson Valley area. He has been playing guitar since he was 11 years old. First interested in classic rock guitarists like Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, his tastes and playing have since evolved from this well lauded genre to the great classical composers.
He brings the great composers of the past decades and centuries to local venues, cafes and restaurants. He in particular likes to perform music from Latin American classical composers like Heitor Villa-Lobos as well as arrangements of well renowned European composers such as Frederic Chopin and Erik Satie. He is mostly self-taught although he has taken classical guitar classes while a student at SUNY Purchase. Donations are greatly appreciated! | ||

An accomplished singer/songwriter from Kresgeville, Pennsylvania, Jeni Hackett has been spreading her natural folk vibe to all ages. After starting out locally in her hometown as a solo artist, she has since branched out to a larger area, which has formed a following that now spans across most of the entire eastern part of Pennsylvania. Jeni’s sweet melodic voice combined with the gentle strum or picking of her guitar or mandolin creates a very colorful picture that is painted with her own thoughts and reflections of the world. Her ability to tell a story in a traditional folk manner coupled with her original melodies, linger long after she has finished performing. Combining her original tunes with her long list of covers, including country, oldies, top 40, or folk tunes, makes Jeni a natural performer that any audience can appreciate. | ||

| Please join us on Friday, July 21 for PS21’s 2023 Nouveau Cirque Gala, with dinner under the big tent and a performance by the acclaimed Cirk La Putyka from the Czech Republic. The politically astute, inventive, rebellious circus troupe will present Runners, a visually stunning metaphor for the frantic pace of modern life, where four performers run, cavort, collide, writhe, somersault, ride bikes, and perform Cyr-wheel acrobatics on a giant treadmill with breathtaking skill and athleticism. Steve is an award winning Americana artist with strong roots in the singer songwriter tradition, country and rock. His influences include The Beatles, Townes Van Zandt, Pete Seeger, and Steve Earle, among others. He's a regular on the Hudson Valley scene with a steadily growing fan base nationwide.
In 2011, Steve won the Hudson Valley SongFest Emerging Artist Competition, Wildflower! Music and Art Festival songwriting competition, Woody Guthrie Songwriting Contest (Third Place) and was a Kerrville New Folk finalist. In 2010, Steve was the grand prize winner of the Music 2Life songwriting competition for "The Wall Street Fat Cat Tax Payer Bail Out Blues". Steve's first C.D. "It Is What It Is" reached number 12 on the folk D.J. Charts in 2007. He's currently working on his latest C.D. with producer Peter Calo set for a January national release.
