North American Premiere: “Farm Fatale” by Philippe Quesne (France), Tristan Geary
Musical Theater
PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century
2980 Route 66
Chatham, NY   See Map
September 2–3, 7 PM. Philippe Quesne describes “Farm Fatale” as “a theater of postapocalyptic deceleration.” In a world laid waste by environmental collapse, human life has ceased. The sole survivors are five scarecrows, who embrace the roles of dreamers, poets, and activists in a quest for a kinder, less harmful future for the planet. The centerpiece of PATHWAYS 2022 programming, “Farm Fatale” introduces audiences and participants to new European theater in a rural, pristine setting. The work is a cautionary tale about one of the most pressing issues of today’s world.

As a comedic, dystopian pastorale exploring and commenting on the fragility and beauty of the earth’s ecosystem, Quesne’s “Farm Fatale” is a natural choice for PATHWAYS 2022: Blazing Trails to a Sustainable Future, PS21’s multi-disciplinary public initiative that features free performances, arts and environmental education workshops, circus and processional arts, participatory events, and installations.

Since 2014, contemporary jazz band Spin Cycle has been bringing their original music to clubs and concert halls across the US and Canada. Co-lead by Scott Neumann (Drums) and Tom Christensen (Tenor and Soprano Sax), the band highlights their flexibility, reach and capacity to surprise their audiences. On any given song, you might encounter the modal influence of John Coltrane, the second-line funk of New Orleans, or the edgy experimentation of free jazz.

Featuring guitarist Pete McCann and bassist Phil Palombi, both bandleaders and well-respected artists in their own right, Spin Cycle has spent the last 7 years touring, recording, and providing educational workshops at colleges. The band’s fourth CD will be released soon on their label, Sound Footing Records.

The show will be held outdoors in front of the BeanRunner Cafe. In case of rain, it will be held inside the cafe. Call 914-737-1701 for reservations.

The Ed Palermo Big Band "Americana Returns!"The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
The world's zaniest big band returns to re-form the music of Zappa, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter...with comic diversions, because they can't help it!.

"Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk

"[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world."
– Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, and six-time Grammy Award winner

"Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes

palermobigband.com

This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock.

This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.”

The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary.

Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny.

“I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.”

Pat Metheny is launching a new playing environment called “Side-Eye” for this upcoming season. Pat explains “I wanted to create an ongoing setting to feature a rotating cast of new and upcoming musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way. I find myself inspired by how they deal with the musical challenges that come with the territory of some of those older tunes, and at the same time I find myself intrigued with the possibilities of what might be possible in writing new music just for them. This band setting is what that will be all about.
With Pat Metheny, you simply never know what is coming next. But among the many things that make this ever-changing artist so special is the astoundingly consistent level of commitment and quality that he brings to everything he does.

McClure mixes humor, heart and a deep poetic sensibility with sweet tenor vocals and nimble-fingered guitar in his songs, influenced by folk, country, blues, jazz and early pop styles, and honed over decades in the classic folk circuit of coffee houses, bars, festivals and concert venues. His tunes evoke a world both mundane and subtly spiritual, mordant but hopeful, and always splashed with wry humor and only slightly self-mocking optimism. In his recorded efforts, J. W. is joined by long-time collaborator and extreme multi-instrumentalist Thaddeus Spae on guitarron, harmonica, guitar, keyboards, trombone and more, as well as other musical guests adding long-distance accompaniments.

For over a decade Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. They’ve attracted a wide variety of fans- young and old, neophytes and niche-enthusiasts- with the strength of their musicianship and the scope of their jazz and American roots music catalog.

While they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music, spirituals, country blues, string band music, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music from an early 20th century perspective.
