3:00pm / Join us for a lecture with MIT professor emeritus and Handel scholar Ellen T. Harris.
Theodora stands out as one of Handel’s finest creations. Composed in 1749 at the twilight of his career, this penultimate major work was undervalued at the time but recognized now as the masterpiece it is. An oratorio brimming with dramatic intensity (and often staged as an opera), Theodora traces the tragic tale of the eponymous Christian martyr facing persecution at the hands of the Romans. This concert performance — with Trinity Wall Street’s magnificent period-instrument Orchestra and Choir — features a stellar roster of celebrated soloists including Anthony Roth Costanzo and Marie-Eve Munger. For those who prefer a more casual concert environment, Garden Listening tickets are $20, and free for Members and children under 18. Sunday 7:00 pm | Sunday Evening Jazz with Joe Lovano's Trio Tapestry, with Marilyn Crispell & Carmen Castaldi | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
Now, after more than four jazz-star decades that have seen the "Tenor Titan" considered one of Sonny Rollins’ heirs (and a collaborator with originals from Bill Frisell and Elvin Jones to Esperanza Spalding), Lovano’s Trio Tapestry explores delicate distillations of the musical resources that all three members have often individually set loose with warp-speed intensity. - The Guardian
Whereas Sun Ra was fond of saying, “Space is the place,” for the members of Trio Tapestry a more appropriate mantra might be, “Space is the thing.” Garden Of Expression, the trio’s sophomore effort....the audio itself revels in spaciousness, thanks to the reverberant acoustics of the Auditorio Stella Molo RSI in Lugano, Switzerland, where even whispered notes are unexpectedly resonant. - Downbeat https://www.newyorker.com/.../joe-lovano-garden-of... The great saxophonist Joe Lovano has appeared on a number of ECM recordings over the last four decades, including much-loved albums with Paul Motian, Steve Kuhn and John Abercrombie. Trio Tapestry is his first as a leader for the label, introducing a wonderful new group and music of flowing lyricism, delicate texture, and inspired interplay. Lovano and pianist Marilyn Crispell are in accord at an advanced level inside its structures. ‘Marilyn has such a beautiful sound and touch and vocabulary,’ Joe enthuses. Drummer Carmen Castaldi, a Lovano associate of long-standing, also responds to the trio environment with sensitivity, subtly embellishing and detailing the pieces. Lovano: ‘We play together like an orchestra, creating an amazing tapestry. I brought in the material, but there’s an equal weight of contribution, creating music within the music, and harmonizing it in a really special way.’ Trio Tapestry was recorded at New York’s Sear Sound studio in March 2018, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Sunday 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm | Jubilant Bridge Singer-Songwriter, Contemporary | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online and on the radio, NY See Map |
A pure-voiced poet and a dulcimer wizard weave their voices and instruments into a rich, harmony-driven sound that is fresh and innovative. Intricate arrangements, harmonies “so tight, they pulse” (Mary Cliff, WAMU-FM), a repertoire ranging from critically-acclaimed originals and contemporary songs to finger-dancing instrumentals and unexpected covers — these are the hallmarks of every Jubilant Bridge performance. Vox Populi winner at the Independent Music Awards and two-time finalist for Best Group/Duo in the International Acoustic Music Awards, Jubilant Bridge comes from a rich aural tradition, but surprises audiences with counter-melodies, changing time signatures, and well-chosen dissonance. The duo’s instruments go beyond simple accompaniment; the arrangements and the songs themselves are meshed. They have six recordings; the latest, “A Bell A Bird A Star,” called “a gem of a Christmas album” by Significato Journal, achieved #7 on the Folk DJ charts.

Saturday 7:00 pm | Ed Palermo Big Band | The Man from Planet Ed! | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
"The Deadliest Ed the world has ever known!"
VIDEO: Happy Together: https://youtu.be/0Ft46dKsqvo The world's zaniest big band returns to re-form the music of Zappa, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, and more...with comic diversions, because they can't help it! "Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk "[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world." – Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, and six-time Grammy Award winner "Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes https://www.palermobigband.com/ This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock. This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.” The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary. Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny. “I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.”

Saturday 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm | The Felice Brothers, Paramount Hudson Valley Theater Valley and Box off Folk/Traditional | Paramount Hudson Valley Theater 1008 Brown Street PEEKSKILL, NY See Map |
| Folk-rock legends the Felice Brothers and singer/songwriter Skullcrusher to perform at the Paramount for the first time EVER on Saturday, August 6!
“The Felice Brothers, who began as New York City buskers, came to prominence during the late-Aughts folk-Americana boom ushered in by groups like the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons. But unlike many of their contemporaries, the band has, from its inception, prioritized self-definition over success, intentionally steering their career away from big-time opportunities… ‘All your favorite bands want to be in the Felice Brothers,’ Deer Tick guitarist Ian O’Neil recently wrote. ‘It’s time that the band get the credit that they and their music deserve.’” – Rolling Stone “Skullcrusher is not a metal band, or an industrial band, or whatever other abrasive genre you’re probably thinking of. It’s the solo project of LA singer-songwriter Helen Ballentine. Info/buy tickets
