Chatham, NY   See Map
What if the family narrative that shapes us is a lie? “Three Decembers” tells the story of aging Broadway star Madeline Mitchell and her two adult children as they struggle to connect and heal old wounds while family secrets are revealed. This intimate, compelling drama takes place over two decades during the AIDS crisis, and has been hailed by critics as a modern masterpiece.

The one act “Three Decembers” takes a deep look at the meaning of connection in the contemporary American family through the story of Broadway star Madeline Mitchell and her children. Stage Director Beth Greenberg, renowned for her work at the New York City Opera, says of the opera: “Buried secrets…dark whispers…love, and devastating loss…all collide and burst forth in “Three Decembers.” With its skillful balance of drama and èlan, the work probes the fraught relationships between a successful actress-mother and her two children at the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic.”

Marlboro, NY   See Map
The show will be dedicated to Tony Falco, who was a friend and champion of the band for many years and is missed dearly.

Club d'Elf has been helping audiences lose track of time for almost twenty five years with its mesmerizing synthesis of Moroccan traditional music and electronic, dubbed-out funk.

VIDEO: King Kong (Frank Zappa) Live in studio: https://youtu.be/kKZA8cAVDAY

"You Never Know is a wide ranging romp, full of ....peerless musicianship inspired by music from India and Morocco as well as the maverick jazz of Miles Davis and Frank Zappa." - Banning Eyre, Afropop Worldwide

“Crushed between the borders of Morocco, jam band land and the kingdom of avant-garde jazz lies Club d’Elf...James Brown-meets-Sun-Ra.” – Jed Gottlieb, Boston Herald

"....the lovechild of Pink Floyd and George Clinton, dropped in Marrakesh...deeply psychedelic...." - WNYC.

FEATURING:
Mike Rivard / Leader, Bass
Dean Johnston / Drums
Paul Schultheis / Piano, Keys
Mister Rourke / DJ
and Special Guest David FUZE Fiuczynski (fretted and fretless guitars)

www.davidfiuczynski.com/

Guitar shredder, researcher, composer, and winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, David Fiuczynski explores the microtonal universe like few others. His many credits include Stewart Copeland (The Police), Jack DeJohnette, Hiromi, Bernie Worrell and Me’shell NdegeOcello.

www.ClubdElf.com

The band's new album, 'You Never Know', offers gnawa refracted through a prism of contemporary psychedelia—Morocco turned technicolor. The record unfurls upon kaleidoscopic clouds of spiced smoke, shifting from chopped dub-jazz through trance epics that reimagine Boston as a city of bazaars.

Club d'Elf pay tribute to the music and musicians who have been primary influences, with half the album being covers of gnawa, Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Moroccan band Nass el-Ghiwane, and Frank Zappa. The other half consists of original music inspired by Rivard's personal journey into darkness following a near death experience in the remote jungle of the Peruvian Amazon.

Each Club d'Elf performance features a different line-up, drawn from a constellation of some of the most creative improvisers from the jazz, DJ, rock & world music scenes of Boston, NYC and beyond. The band's music draws from a startlingly wide spectrum of styles, including jazz, hip hop, electronica, avant garde, prog-rock and dub.

A Night at the Opera with Stephanie Blythe & Laquita Mitchell
Classical/Opera
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts
149 Girdle Ridge Road
Katonah, NY   See Map
On Site Opera presents an evening of operatic comedy and tragedy featuring international star Stephanie Blythe. In Lesson Plan, Blythe stars as an acclaimed opera diva who thinks she will be teaching a master class with trained singers at a prestigious conservatory. Instead, due to a scheduling faux pas, she takes the stage for a group of liberal arts students at a community college — a group with little singing experience or interest in what the great diva has in mind. Intercepted by an overwhelmed school administrator (Laquita Mitchell) with a side hustle as an amateur choir director, the pair clash over teaching technique, singing, and the true meaning of art. In the second half of the program, Blythe reprises her acclaimed tenor debut in the role of Don José in excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen, joined by Mitchell and Maya Lahyani for a thrilling program of arias and duets from this timeless opera arranged for two piano accompaniment.

"...one of contemporary blues' most dynamic and innovative. musicians, releasing consistently exciting music... soulful, heartfelt and spellbinding." - Blues Review

"His fretwork is indelibly stamped with his own trademark blend of emotional heat and impeccable precision. Even at his most flamboyant, Walker sounds as if he's playing ideas, not just notes." - Living Blues

http://www.joelouiswalker.com/

Walker, a Blues Hall of Fame inductee and six-time Blues Music Award winner, celebrates a career that exceeds a half a century. One of most celebrated and respected bluesmen working today, Joe Louis Walker, returns with some of the most electrifying recordings he's done in his over 5 decade long career!

This extraordinarily Album Eclectic Electric (2021), includes the blues stomping opener "Uptown Girl Blues" and horn-powered "Bad Betty" as well a killer cover versions of The Eagles' "Hotel California" and Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London!" You'll hear special guest performances by Waddy Wachtel, Doyle Bramhall II and the incomparable B.B. King Blues Band!

For many years now Joe has been raining fire with his guitar and spitting brimstone with his vocals. His playing "blows all over the map…gutbucket blues, joyous gospel, Rolling Stones-style rock crunch, and aching R&B. Walker’s guitar playing is fine and fierce." - Billboard

Walker finally takes his rightful place among the pantheon of legendary electric blues singer/guitarist/songwriters like B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Luther Allison. Blues Revue calls Walker "one of contemporary blues' most dynamic and innovative. musicians, releasing consistently exciting music... soulful, heartfelt and spellbinding." Living Blues says, "His fretwork is indelibly stamped with his own trademark blend of emotional heat and impeccable precision. Even at his most flamboyant, Walker sounds as if he's playing ideas, not just notes."

"...her casual between-song banter, in which she shared anecdotes about her amazing journey from small-town poverty to the heights of bebop to her current status as a grand dame of jazz.... both entertaining and revealing." - Bill Milkowski/Jazz Times

NEA Jazz Master, Sheila Jordan, is one of the most consistently creative jazz singers of all time - a superb scat singer, and an emotional interpreter of ballads.

And every time she hits the stage, she continues to pay tribute to her idol and main inspiration, Charlie Parker.

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online and on the radio, NY   See Map
In a country that loves its Celtic music, it’s no surprise that Vancouver’s Pat Chessell has become known as one of the most exciting roots artists in Western Canada. Pat’s rootsy vocal style, charismatic stage presence and expert musicianship (guitar) are making for an ever-growing audience of enthusiastic fans. While his mostly original music falls solidly under the broad umbrella of ‘Celtic’, Pat’s range is prodigious and eclectic. It’s been variously described as straight-ahead “folk”, “upbeat Celtic influenced Canadian folk/pop”, and “moving mid-and-up-tempo contemporary Celtic”, among other labels. His tunes have also, on occasion, known to be tinged with Americana influences.
But, to cut to the chase, it’s all Pat’s music. Its music played and performed, and often written, in Pat’s distinctive and unique voice; strongly rooted in the Celtic tradition, but with an open-hearted connection to the place he calls home and the modern world around him.

PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century

Chatham, NY   See Map
Free and for all ages, Michael Gordon’s Field of Vision is a large-scale, site-responsive work adapted to PS21’s rolling landscape. Doug Perkins directs 36 percussionists playing specially constructed and tuned instruments composed of industrial metals, recycled materials, wood, and gongs. The large number of percussionists and the vast playing field highlights the perspective and the architectural movement of sound. In Field of Vision, sound is never a flat line; it takes on multiple roles in space and time, inducing a quasi-meditative, almost ecstatic state in both the audience and the performers. Bring a chair or blanket.

Born and raised in Philadelphia,Todd Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential `60’s psychedelic group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972’s seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him ‘Rock’s New Wunderkind’. It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and the above mentioned A Wizard, A True Star, as well as such hit singles as I Saw The Light, Hello It’s Me, Can We Still Be Friends, and Bang The Drum.

Considered Strauss’s only true comic opera, this rollicking piece represents an intriguing evolution in the composer’s work. With an incisively witty libretto by Stefan Zweig featuring a madcap cast of characters including the retired admiral Sir Morosus alongside a scheming barber and a wide-eyed ingenue amongst others, this imaginative production by Christian Räth (Das Wunder der Heliane, SummerScape 2019) promises to be delightful summertime fare.
