A Tribute to Tony Falco
with Tisziji Muñoz Quartet, w/ Paul Shaffer & John Medeski!
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Once more, Tisziji’s brings his Depths of Heart-Fire Sound to The Falcon, with long-time collaborators, Paul Shaffer (Letterman Band) and John Medeski (MMW)!

"...nobody plays guitar the way Tisziji Munoz does. He is very spiritual, and as a guitar player he swings wild.” - Paul Shaffer

Featuring:
Don Yaka Pate / Bass
Tony Sadhu Bhav Falco / Drums
Ra-Kalam Bob Moses / Drums

https://www.tisziji.com/

Spirit-taught, avant-garde jazz virtuoso and extreme guitarist, Muñoz is best known for his unique, original sound and style, likened to that of a spiritual tornado. His career has spanned over five decades and includes a vast repertoire of creative works and inspired compositions released by his independent label, Anami Music.

"I have [since] played with all the great guitar players, from Eric Clapton to Van Halen to Santana to Jeff Beck, and nobody plays guitar the way Tisziji Munoz does. He is very spiritual, and as a guitar player he swings wild." - Paul Shaffer

Special Guest Canadian-American Paul Shaffer is best-known as David Letterman's musical director, band leader and sidekick. Shaffer began his music career as the musical director for the Toronto production of Godspell. He went on to play piano for the Broadway show The Magic Show, then became a member of the house band on NBC's popular Saturday Night Live (SNL). He is musical director for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Shaffer has released two solo albums, Grammy-nominated 'Coast to Coast', and 'The World's Most Dangerous Party', produced by rock icon Todd Rundgren. Paul spent 33 years with David Letterman as leader of the house band.

https://youtu.be/lepq_0M_r0k

Special Guest John Medeski, of the genre-defying trio Medeski Martin & Wood, has garnered fans across the musical spectrum. Built upon jazz roots, electronics and rhythmic grooves, MMW have broken out of the traditional jazz sphere and have shared the bill with groups such as The Roots, Beck, A Tribe Called Quest, Ray Charles, Hermento Pascoal, and Phish, frequently appearing in venues unavailable to most jazz artists.

Medeski’s recording credits include John Zorn, Iggy Pop, T Bone Burnett, Ray Lamontagne, Dan The Automator and k.d. Lang. Medeski has produced The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, pedal steel guitar group The Campbell Brothers, and two records from The Wood Brothers.

World, Contemporary
PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century
2980 Route 66
Chatham, NY   See Map
Playwright/performer Sylvia Milo and composer/percussionist Nathan Davis were in residency at PS21 to develop Magdalene: I am the utterance of my name, a music-theater piece about the web of clashing myths, beliefs, symbols, and decrees surrounding the life of Mary Magdalene. The creators of The Other Mozart, about the forgotten genius sister of Amadeus, return this summer to complete work on their new play, with a public performance on July 10.

Equal parts theater, experimental music performance, and ritual, the playwright and composer draw on a multitude of texts and sources—biblical, Gnostic, heretical, medieval, and modern—the drama unfolds in seven apparitions of Mary Magdalene, portrayed by Milo. Davis plays instruments both ancient and modern—hammered dulcimer, harmonium, and hand drums—interweaving the live sound design with field recordings from sites significant to the myths. Tickets: $20 general; $10 for students and youth!

"This one's a mind blower...I'm calling Choices the first great album of 2019," *****++ rating from The Rock Doctor, John Kereiff

"One of the few remarkable voices that comes into contemporary blues...[her] material is fine and the recording band is truly outstanding." Microwave Dave, WLHR Huntsville, AL

"Willa could make a reading of the local news sound sexy. Stellar musicianship, impeccable arrangements and a band that performs as a single unit make for an album you do not want to pass up." Bill Wilson, Reflections in Blue

"Vincitore delivers rich observations of life and relationships on this rootsy collection...this lady is comfortable in her own skin, and she carries a song the same way." George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Willa Vincitore
www.willaandcompany.com

Singer/songwriter Willa Vincitore has been building a fan base across the Hudson Valley for nearly two decades. While her songwriting is an eclectic mix of blues, soul, rock, funk and (occasionally) pop, there’s one thing that ties it all together—that voice.

Willa’s debut CD, Better Days (2017) received critical acclaimed from more than 50 reviewers worldwide. The Blues and Roots Music Report listed it as one of the Top 50 Contemporary Blues releases of 2017.

Willa's band debuted at The Falcon in 2013, following her departure from the Chris O'Leary Band. The Company of “Willa & Co.,” rotates and changes based on the spin of any individual performance, and may be stripped bare or piled high.

Jay Collins
www.jaycollinsband.com
The saxophone player of choice for famous artists such as Gregg Allman, Little Feat, (the late) Levon Helm, and Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Jay Collins played on two Grammy-winning recordings with Levon Helm, a platinum-selling DVD with the Allman Brothers Band (Live at the Beacon Theater), and was featured on horns and arrangments for the Grammy-nominated recording with Gregg Allman, “Southern Blood” (2017).

Whether fronting his own band, The Northern Resistance, on lead vocals and sax, or blowing his horn in the bands of legendary musicians, Jay always delivers.

Jay also toured in 2010-11 with The Dukes of September, a collective featuring Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, and Michael McDonald, he played with Ray LaMontagne, Melissa Etheridge, James Hunter, and more recently has been lending his horn talents to the legendary band, Little Feat. In addition, Mr. Collins has serious jazz credentials, including touring and recording stints with Jacky Terrasson, Andrew Hill, and Bobby Sanabria among others.

Scott Sharrard
www.scottsharrard.com

Sharrard spent nearly a decade as lead guitarist and bandleader to the late Gregg Allman. Their partnership included the Sharrard-penned “Love Like Kerosene,” which Allman covered on 2015’s “Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA,” and again on Allman’s eighth and final solo album, the posthumous, GRAMMY-nominated “Southern Blood” (Rounder Records, 2017). Another “Southern Blood” track, “My Only True Friend” – co-written by Sharrard and Allman – earned a GRAMMY nomination for Americana Song of the Year.

In addition to touring all over the USA and the world with his band, Scott is the newest member of the legendary Rock and Roll Band Little Feat, stepping in after the passing of Paul Barrere back in November 2019.

The Brentano String Quartet and soprano Dawn Upshaw join forces for this special evening. Early English work will flow toward the famous Lament from Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas, in which Dido confesses an intensely intimate plea to a friend. After intermission, composer Melinda Wagner and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann breathe new life into Dido, imagining her psyche, her vulnerability, and her strength. This unique monodrama will probe a truly compelling character through the concentrated closeness of the chamber music experience.

Since their emergence more than 30 years ago, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a “Jewish roots band,” the Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form.

On their Grammy-winning 2006 album Wonder Wheel, the Klezmatics set a dozen previously unsung Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, widening their stylistic base by largely diverging from klezmer. They have also recently served as the subject of a feature-length documentary film, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground.

They have collaborated with such brilliant artists as violinist Itzhak Perlman, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and Israeli vocal icon Chava Alberstein, plus many other prominent artists working within multiple genres.

The Klezmatics’ music is not a strictly traditional variety of the klezmer genre. Rather it is a comfortable hybrid that appeals equally to those with no previous exposure to the music and those already familiar with it.
