 On this weekend in June, the Freedom Park Bandshell in LaGrangeville will be the venue for a swinging "Ella and Frank, Big Band Style" show presented by The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra, including six vocalists and swing dance performers, and it will benefit the Sparrow's Nest local charity. Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra collectively recorded more than three thousand different songs during the Golden Age of Popular Music. This original show will spotlight the best of those songs: the songs at the core of the Great American Songbook, all in the most exciting setting of a live big band. Performances are Friday, June 3rd at 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 4th at 6 p.m. and although tickets won't be required for entry, the suggested donation is $20 per person with proceeds benefiting the Sparrow's Nest charity. Bring folding chairs and blankets, and note that if it should rain, the performance will take place under the cover of the large picnic pavilion adjacent to the bandshell.

This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock.
This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.”
The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary.
Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny.
“I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.”

 Free for students and youth! PS21 is excited to welcome pianist/composer Sean Mason and his quintet to Pathways 2022. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Sean has lived in New York City since 2017, where he is a Jazz at Lincoln Center Emerging Artist, leading his own ensemble and a much sought-after sideman. He has been featured in Ellington Through the Ages with Wynton Marsalis and in Danny Barker: A New Orleans Life in Jazz, alongside a who’s who of New Orleans’ musical elite. At PS21, Sean will be joined by the stellar members of his quintet, Felix Moseholm, Domo Branch, Tony Glausi, and Abdias Armenteros in a performance of his original music, selected from three works: “The Southern Suite,” “The Migration Suite,” and, his most recent—and timely—“The Recovery Suite.”
Like many Pathways programs, the quintet’s performance at PS21 is free for students, and priced with accessibility and affordability in mind for all.

 In the 1980s the toasting style of Jamaica’s King Yellowman made the singer the toast of the dancehall reggae movement. Although his lyrics were frequently controversial, his lolling, loose, and languid delivery has been a marked influence on many modern reggae vocalists. Called “the biggest reggae artist since Bob Marley,” he visits the Falcon in support of his album NO MORE WAR (2019) with K’reema and the Sagittarius Band.

Mark Viera: Mark made his network television debut on NBC’s Emmy award winning show “30 Rock” an opportunity that piqued the interest of the industry’s most prominent executives. The comic and businessman recently sold a sitcom based on his compelling life to Warner Bros. and FOX. The much-anticipated project which is produced by comedy legend George Lopez is currently in development.
Mark is unfazed by his growing popularity and remains loyal to his New York roots. Known to his fans as the Latin Prince he performs regularly at top comedy clubs including Caroline’s on Broadway and Gotham Comedy Club. He is also a regular at Improv’s and FunnyBone Comedy Clubs nationwide. Mark was hand picked to perform on the “Leatherneck” tour for the U.S. Marine Corps which is now in its second year. Bruce Molsky is making his third appearance at The Stissing Center, this time alone on guitar performing music from his latest CD, Everywhere You Go.
This new album is a riveting departure from a decades-long career dominated by Appalachian-style fiddle. Everywhere You Go, his first solo guitar album, combines musical influences from across the globe to create a project sure to cement Molsky’s reputation as one of the great multi-instrumentalists of our time.

 To bring the music of The Allman Brothers Band to life 50 years after Duane Allman formed the original band, a former member of the Allman Brothers, David "Rook" Goldflies (78-82), launched “A Brother’s Revival” to honor and do justice to the music of that legendary group.
A Brothers Revival is unique in that the group has a musical director who recorded and toured with the Allman Brothers Band. David "Rook" Goldflies played in the Allman Brothers night after night on the road.
