Esther Street Jazz
with Kristina Koller - Album Release Celebration
Jazz
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Jazz artist Kristina Koller will be presenting music from her latest album "Get Out of Town" - a salute to one of her favorite composers, Cole Porter. Ranging from his well-known compositions such as "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Just One of Those Things" to a repertoire of never recorded tunes, Porter was known for his bold choices. What better way to honor his boldness than with arrangements that bring out the music in a new, contemporary way. The quartet will include Fima Chupakhin on piano, James Robbins on bass and Juan Chiavassa on drums.

"Kristina Koller has a fearless musical curiosity that leads her to blend all sorts of elements together into a variety of fresh sounds and sing over them with complete assurance and ease." - Jerome Wilson at All About Jazz

$20 suggested donation. For reservations, call 914-737-1701.

Weather permitting, the show will be held outside the BeanRunner Cafe on Esther Street, otherwise, the show will be inside.

Bernard Purdie
https://www.bernardprettypurdie.com/

Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies. Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete; it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. A native of Elkton, Maryland - Purdie has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date.

The legendary drummer's style is described as the "funkiest soul beat" in the business. Purdie has never limited his talents, but has consistently sought out new musical experiences, anchoring sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones with equal ease. "DRIVE" and "GROOVE" are definitely not missing from his vocabulary.

Little Big II: Dreams Of A Mechanical Man (2020) : https://aaronparksmusic.bandcamp.com/.../little-big-ii...

Aaron Parks
https://www.aaronparks.com/
https://aaronparksmusic.bandcamp.com/album/little-big

Aaron Parks, acclaimed pianist, keyboardist and composer, is a forward-thinking jazz musician who came to the public's attention during his time with trumpeter Terence Blanchard.

When Parks released "Aaron Parks Little Big" (2018) it was at once the culmination of his brilliant early career and the long-awaited follow-up to his Blue Note Records debut, Invisible Cinema - with its gorgeously melodic writing and improvising and deft use of indie-rock, electronica and hip-hop elements - established Parks as one of the most gifted and original young voices in jazz.

Little Big is the intuitive working group that gave the album its title (and which takes its name from a fantastical novel by John Crowley—a favorite book of Parks and, the pianist notes, Wayne Shorter).

Dreams of a Mechanical Man (2020) is Little Big’s second release on Ropeadope Records, recorded after more than two years of touring for Parks, guitarist Greg Tuohey, bassist David “DJ” Ginyard, and drummer Tommy Crane. One primary distinction of this new album, according to Parks, is that “today, the band operates as a single organism. The first record was about the tunes and the aesthetic. This album keeps that focus and also captures the chemistry we’ve developed on the road, the way this band feels as it makes music in the moment.”

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts

A baby girl was born to parents who loved music. The story goes that she started singing before she could talk.

She wrote her first song on piano when she was seven and kept on writing.

Along the way she picked up other instruments, enjoying the variety of sounds they made.

When she grew up she sang in coffee houses, festival, colleges and she even sang at a world’s fair.

As the years went on, she recorded 6 full- length albums.

She has said, “a song doesn’t seem finished to me until it’s shared with others.”

She has so enjoyed these words and more written about her music: Beth is a real musician. She writes songs with melodic interest, and she plays a number of instruments very well. (We heard her on guitar, piano and accordion!) She has a a quiet intensity which I found captivating. Variety was the spice of the evening —Les Gerber, The Woodstock Times

James Brown Band Alumnus - Pee Wee Ellis (1941-2221)
https://www.facebook.com/OfficialPeeWeeEllis/

Pee Wee has been called The Man Who Invented Funk, joining James Brown in 1965, generating 26 recordings that define what we think of as Funk to this day. Pee Wee's effect on music led directly to George Clinton, Sly Stone and, in a circular twist, Miles Davis.

In 1979 Van Morrison asked Pee Wee to arrange his Into The Music album, an association that lasted for six years and five albums, then repeated for another five years and five more albums in 2013.

A reunited JB Horns - James Brown's original horn section ; Pee Wee, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker - made several albums and toured extensively.
Pee Wee had found world music, and has contributed arrangements for Malian singer Oumou Sangare, Senegalese singer Cheikh Lo, Cuban legends: Cachaito and Miguel CEAnga1 Diaz, and World Circuit Records, including work on Ali Farka Toure's last album.

Willi Amrod Band Live in Concert: https://youtu.be/jxnYKHr1FD8

Willie Amrod has been playing for decades with some of the best musicians in the world. He opened for Janis Joplin, and for Levon Helm at the old Lone Star NYC. His funk-based fare has roots rock and country flavors, and environmental themes long before it became fashionable.

His CD Children of the Earth was produced by renowned drummer Gary Burke (Bob Dylan, Joe Jackson Shania Twain) and featured the JBs-Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley- the famed original horn section for James Brown, members of NRBQ's Joey Spampinato,Terry Adams, Steve Ferguson and Frank Gadler joined in as well as John Platania, Ed Roynesdal, Ted Orr, Swampbat Sheehan and Rob Leon.

The Amrod Band currently plays in the Hudson Valley area, where it's built a solid fanbase the old-fashioned way, by relentless gigs and great shows.
