[the whole] Ed Palermo Big Band Returns! The FALCON

Big Kahuna Ed is busting out the full big band for an Indian Summer Zappa/Beefheart tribute! The world's zaniest large ensemble re-forms the music...with comic diversions, because they can't help it!
.
"Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk

"[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world."
– Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, and six-time Grammy Award winner

"Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes

palermobigband.com

This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock.

This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.”

The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary.

Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny.

“I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.”

Bria Skonberg
Jazz
Emelin Theatre
Mamaroneck, NY   See Map
To most of us, the adventures of trailblazing trumpeter, vocalist and songwriter Bria Skonberg are borderline unbelievable.

“I play jazz because it’s the closest I can get to flying.…spreading joy, relating the human experience, and putting good into the world to counteract the negative. I want to make music that makes people feel, and think.”– Bria Skonberg

Described as “one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” (Wall Street Journal), she recently sang the music of Aretha Franklin alongside Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, played with U2 at the Apollo, sat in with the Dave Matthews band, was a featured guest with Jon Batiste and performed the Star Spangled Banner at Madison Square Garden for a NY Rangers game. A bandleader since her teens, Bria has performed at festivals and on stages the world over, including New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and over a hundred more.

Comedian, actor and best selling author, Jay Mohr has been performing stand-up comedy since he was sixteen years old. With a career that has spanned over three decades, Jay has become an artist that is very difficult to define. Never wanting to rest on his accomplishments, Jay has always pushed himself to be more than just a comic.
On June 15th, New York State lifted most Covid restrictions that impacted performances at the Paramount. Unvaccinated individuals must continue to be responsible for wearing masks, in accordance with federal CDC guidance. This is consistent with the State’s implementation of the recent CDC guidance.

Howard Gladstone
Singer-Songwriter. Contemporary Folk
Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online and on the radio, NY   See Map
Howard Gladstone, Toronto singer/songwriter, released “The Promise” - his sixth collection of original songs in October 2020 , recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. It is being followed by the “Concord Sessions” in October 2021.
Howard has found his unique voice and a style which he named “Hybrid Folk”, releasing five previous albums since his 2002 debut, “Sunflowers Light The Room”.

“The Promise” continues Howard’s musical explorations in a time where meaning and truth become ever more elusive and debased. The album is a balancing act, juggling personal and global concerns, reflecting the angst of the times.
“Concord Sessions” continues in that vein, holding a mirror up to human nature, in an age of environmental and humanitarian crisis, and a future we have limited time to shape.
If you heard this music in a crowded room, you'd suspect it was a lost gem from another time” –Toronto Star

" ...one of the hardest working Reggae Bands in the world."

King Yellowman
http://www.kingyellowman.com

In the history of Reggae music, King Yellowman's story is incredible - an upbringing at the Maxfield Home orphanage in Kingston, and being an albino in Jamaica - overcoming obstacles to become the biggest Reggae artist since Bob Marley.

After winning a talent contest at Tastee Patties in Kingston, Yellow went on to excite reggae crowds throughout Jamaica, and the rest of the world, with his boastful, bodacious lyrics. He demonstrated an ability to ride rhythm and engage the crowds. His work with the Ace Sound System in St. Thomas, drew immense crowds at dance hall performances.

Yellowman worked for a number of different producers, sometimes releasing as many as five albums per year. This led to a recording contract with CBS Records, with whom he recorded one album, before he was diagnosed with jaw cancer and was given six months to live....in 1986.

King Yellowman was featured on American group The Dubplates song “UH HUH”, which peaked at number four on the Billboard (2017) Reggae Album charts.

royalty - a beautiful spirit on and off the stage.

K'reema has earned her title - Princess of Dancehall - with an electrifying stage show. One of the fresh new melodic voices on the international music scene, sh is a powerful vocalist, creative songwriter and producer. Her sultry fusion of pop/r&b with hard core reggae leaves fans captivated.

K’reema created her own "family" label, Yellow Baby, inspired by one of her father’s hit songs, and released her father King Yellowman's first album in 15 years.

K’reema has released music of her own as well as her line of apparel branded ‘zunguzunguguzunguzeng’, a phrase made popular by Yellowman, and holds the title of the best dancehall song in the world.

Zunguzunguguzunguzeng has been sampled by local and international music stars, including the late Tupac; Queen Latifa, Buju Banton and Vybz Kartel.

Robbie Dupree began his music career singing on the street corners of Brooklyn. His passion for music flourished in the rich, creative atmosphere of the late 1960s. Moving to New York City during these exciting days, Robbie dedicated himself to songwriting and the pursuit of a solo career. He studied the work of R&B legends such as Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke. Their powerful rhythms and sensual melodies became the foundation of Robbie’s emerging style, which would take him through several ensembles in the city and eventually to Woodstock, where he garnered national acclaim with his songs "Steal Away", "Hot Rod Hearts", "Brooklyn Girls", and "When You're Down."

Robbie released his debut album in 1978, earning two Top Ten singles and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and has continued to record and perform through his new single Ordinary Day (2018).

In the ensuing years, Robbie has recorded and released ten studio recordings. His songs have been featured in TV and film, notably Donnie Brasco and most recently on the TV shows Better Call Saul and Orange is the New Black. Robbie appeared as the musical guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where he was backed up by The Roots. Jimmy is a long-time fan and, in fact, showed up at one of Robbie’s concerts and sang with him on Steal Away.
