Saturday 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm | Ed Palermo's Chemistry Set | The FALCON & The FALCON UNDERGROUND 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
No Tickets | No Cover | Donations Encouraged | Reservations Required
The world's zaniest big band presents its "mini me" version, and re-forms the music of Zappa, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter...with comic diversions, because they can't help it!. "Wonderful, breathtaking, fantastic, exhilarating, great sound, great production, great musicianship...I run out of superlatives..." – paradoxone.uk "[Ed Palermo]...one of the greatest musicians and arrangers in the world." – Christian McBride, American jazz bassist, composer, arranger, and six-time Grammy Award winner "Palermo developed these charts during years of live shows with these musicians, and their mastery of the material shows in the performances, which turn on a dime yet feel fierce with spontaneous invention.... Palermo’s arrangements and these performances are precise, dedicated, raucous and incisive—just like Zappa himself." – JazzTimes palermobigband.com This eighteen-piece ensemble - five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass, drums, and vocalists throughout - has been performing jazz arrangements of Zappa’s music regularly since 1994. But what started out as faithfully antic versions of the composer’s complex, fiendishly clever music has expanded to reflect Palermo’s passion for Todd Rundgren, British psychedelia and progressive rock. This often entails head-spinning in-jokes, such as performing Traffic’s 1971 tune “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” over Zappa’s bass line for his composition “Chunga’s Revenge.” The Ed Palermo Big Band performs monthly at the Iridium in Manhattan and regularly at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, where Palermo often scripts elaborate thematic evenings. At one such event, vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock—a longtime Zappa vocalist who frequently works with Palermo—sang the line “I’m never getting married” (from Jimmy Webb’s “The Worst That Could Happen”) as Palermo stumbled onstage in prison stripes for an evening dedicated to his 34th wedding anniversary. Most of Palermo’s humor, however, lies in the music’s richly textured citations and juxtapositions. The scores themselves are funny. “I wouldn’t call my thing a comedy show,” he said, “but it’s got a lot of humor in it. I often think that jazz takes itself way too seriously. Maybe that makes my thing stand out a little more.” Happy Together: https://youtu.be/0Ft46dKsqvo

"Having visited the Falcon and loving the feeling of community that fills the air, I am honored and happy to perform there with my band. The Falcon reminds me of my favorite places in the 50s when I played in Greenwich Village with the bands of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Pettiford; when Jack Kerouac and I gave the first-ever jazz-poetry readings in NYC; when I played with Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Odetta and Pete Seeger in the 60s, and was composing for the Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Arthur Miller’s "After the Fall" and Joe Papp’s NY Shakespeare Festival, as well as creating film scores for "Splendor in the Grass" and "The Manchurian Candidate". I played with the great singer-songwriters of the time, with Middle Eastern and Native American musicians, and in the 70s, for many of the great Latin-jazz events." - David Amram 2017 Folk Alliance International Lifetime Achievement Award: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7iNryqB1TM

OPENER: Helen Gillet http://www.helengillet.com/ "With just her voice and a cello, Helen Gillet has created a new vocabulary" - Boston Globe Tonight Dayna's sets feature Continental Drifters' Guitarist, Robert Maché https://www.discogs.com/artist/585482-Robert-Mache... "Kurtz tilts her head back at an angle and spins melodic, earthbound poetry that sets loose demons only to dismiss them into the ether... Kurtz makes ordinary misery voluptuous." - L.A. Weekly Dayna Kurtz www.daynakurtz.com Vocalist/writer/musician/producer, Kurtz, has built a formidable body of recordings, won an international reputation as a riveting live performer, amassed an extensive file of rapturous critical raves and earned an equally devoted audience around the world. Dayna Kurtz is the kind of artist who inspires wild-eyed zealotry among her fan. Here are 3 reasons: -1. She's an artist's artist, whose whiskeyed, determined alto earns her comparisons with Nina Simone. -2. While Europeans adore her, she's obscenely underappreciated in her own country. -3. Her songs straddle a difficult space between jazz, rock, and folk, and are pure poetry. The Washington Post called her voice "a deep-hued garnet of lifeblood and beauty". Prominent Dutch op-ed writer Frits Abrahams recently referred to her as the "female Dylan." "There's no logical reason why Dayna Kurtz is not a full-blown star," - The Boston Globe Along the way, Kurtz was named Female Songwriter of the Year by the National Academy of Songwriters. Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt have raved about her in interviews, and she’s performed on World Cafe, Mountain Stage and NPR’s Morning Edition. She’s toured with and/or opened for Elvis Costello, Antony and the Johnsons, Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, B.B. King, Dr. John, Richie Havens, Keren Ann, Joe Henry, Olu Dara, Chris Whitley, Richard Buckner, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Kurtz's seventh studio album and collection of original compositions, is titled "Rise and Fall", followed by her recordings with Robert Maché, titled Here Vol. 1 and Here Vol. 2. “...one of the best guitarists in the country...” - Billboard www.scottsharrard.com SCOTT SHARRARD spent nearly a decade as lead guitarist and bandleader to the late Gregg Allman. While acting as Musical Director & Co-Writer for Allman and recording his record "Southern Blood" in Muscle Shoals, Scott has also been concentrating on the growth of his solo career while holding Gregg's legacy near and dear as a guiding light and a point of everlasting inspiration. Their partnership included the Sharrard-penned “Love Like Kerosene,” which Allman covered on 2015’s “Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA,” and again on Allman’s eighth and final solo album, the posthumous, GRAMMY-nominated “Southern Blood” (Rounder Records, 2017). Another “Southern Blood” track, “My Only True Friend” – co-written by Sharrard and Allman – earned a GRAMMY nomination for Americana Song of the Year. Gregg Allman, had high praise for the guitarist ---- “I know all about guitar players —I’ve seen the very best — and Scott Sharrard is the perfect guitarist for my band. He understands that you don’t need to play just for the sake of playing; Scott isn’t one of those guys who thinks they’re getting paid by the note. He never steps on the vocals, and leaves plenty of room for everyone else to do their thing, but when it’s time to solo, Scott delivers, boy.” The singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer and arranger earlier released three albums with The Chesterfields before embarking on a series of solo efforts. The Michigan natives latest, the top 10 Billboard blues charting solo effort and widely critically acclaimed “Saving Grace,” was delivered in 2018. In addition to touring all over the USA and the world with his band, Scott is the newest member of the legendary Rock and Roll Band Little Feat, stepping in after the passing of Paul Barrere back in November 2019. They plan to collaborate on more shows and a new Little Feat album in 2021. Saving Grace: https://youtu.be/mrtbWs2fzpk "High Cost Of Loving You" Behind The Scenes: https://youtu.be/_glh-ep93HQ
