“Pete Malinverni is one wild cat…his playing can be dark, gritty and oddly rapturous…he digs into the piano and emerges with exotic treasure…” Karl Stark, Philadelphia Inquirer Pete Malinverni, a fixture on the New York City Jazz Scene since the early 1980s, has continued to develop his art, constantly finding more to discover in the works of composers of the Great American Songbook, like Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and Leonard Bernstein, along with his original compositions and music from the canon of the African-American Spiritual. Taken together, Pete’s music, while drawn from many sources, is an honest portrait of the artist/citizen he is. We’ll hear some of that on this evening of heartfelt, approachable jazz. A singular voice in an astounding range of musical contexts, Don Byron explores widely divergent traditions while striving for what he calls “a sound above genre.” As clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and social critic, he redefines every genre of music he plays, be it classical, salsa, hip-hop, funk, klezmer, rhythm & blues, gospel, or any jazz style from swing and bop to cutting-edge downtown improvisation. http://lvanhart.com/artists/don-byron-quartet/ His countless collaborations range from the Duke Ellington Orchestra to Daniel Barenboim and from Salif Keita to Allen Toussaint. He has composed and arranged music for chamber ensembles, dance, and film. A gifted teacher, he has led residencies at universities, including Harvard and Columbia. Byron’s discography comprises a dozen albums for mostly Blue Note and Nonesuch Records. Don Byron Quartet: https://youtu.be/hAqEfaezv_g | ||
