FIRE IN A DARK HOUSE is a poignant wartime romance about a passionate young woman who falls for the son of a powerful newspaper publisher who is waging a dangerous propaganda campaign against immigrant families, including her own. Drawing inspiration from historical events, the play explores themes that resonate strongly today and asks us to consider what it means to be an American, an immigrant, a young Dreamer, and a patriot. The play, created by Mona Z. Smith and Traci Mariano will be part of the Paramount Hudson Valley play reading series and is made possible through a generous Arts Alive grant. In honor of this year's NEA Big Read theme, we're asking artists who have Appalachian themed music in their repertoire to consider including it in their performance. It's NOT a must (cuz it's an OPEN mic, after all), but if you've got 'em, consider flauntin' 'em.

 As a young child, Kazi Oliver tapped out rhythms on many a household item, including tables, counters, even a sister or two. When his mother discovered that a local after school program offered African drumming, Kazi was promptly directed to attend. Since these early beginnings, he has truly become the drummers' version of the Pied Piper, engaging children and adults in experiencing the energy and excitement of African drumming.
Kazi has been teaching for 45 years and performing for over 40 years. Professionally, Kazi has performed at the Village Vanguard, the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and on ABC-TV's "The View." Yet Kazi enjoys just as much, his appearances at community festivals, schools and events that bring together multi-generational and multicultural audiences to experience and enjoy the awesome power of the African drum.

His CD, Live in Montreal, features the latest of thrilling partnerships, an utterly unique duo with the electrifying Japanese pianist Hiromi.
In addition to his acclaimed performing career as an instrumentalist, which includes Paquito D’Rivera’s Carnegie Hall tribute, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, among others. Edmar has also performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, John Scofield, Marcus Miller, John Patitucci, and Chico O’Farrill ‘s Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band.
Andrea Tierra, Edmar’s wife and a superb vocalist, will join to form the quartet.

Twin Kennedy has been described as "Nothing Short of Awesome!" (Cashbox Magazine). With Carli on guitar and vocals and Julie on fiddle and vocals, these sisters have toured extensively throughout Canada and the US.
3-time Canadian Country Music Award Nominee, Winner of two 2016 VIMA Awards and Grand Prize Winner in the 2015 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Twin Kennedy is known for their harmonies and high energy show that blends their classical training with their country roots. Most recently, Twin Kennedy released their debut holiday album, recorded in Nashville, TN with some of Music City’s best including the rhythm section from the Grammy award-winning group The Time Jumpers. The lead single from A Twin Kennedy Christmas was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, and their original holiday track “I’m a Child Again” won the 2019 Independent Music Award for Best Holiday Song.
