 On this weekend in July, the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center in Poughkeepsie will be the venue for a swinging "More Sinatra, Big Band Style" show presented by The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra, including six vocalists and swing dance performers, and it will benefit the Sparrow's Nest local charity in a show spotlighting the music of Frank Sinatra and his friends. Sinatra started off singing with the big bands of Harry James and Tommy Dorsey and he then went on to his spectacular solo career where he was often backed by other famous big bands. This original "More Sinatra, Big Band Style" show will highlight the best of the tunes in the Great American Songbook that Frank Sinatra and his friends brought into our lives, all in the most exciting setting of a live big band. Performances are Friday, July 19th at 8 p.m., Saturday, July 20th at 8 p.m. and Sunday July 21st at 2 p.m. Admission is $20 with proceeds benefiting the Sparrow's Nest charity.

 Michael Gorlin’s Jazz Trio is based in Westchester County, playing mostly jazz, as well as funk and blues. Michael is a student at McGill University, studying Jazz Performance. He gets inspirations from the saxophone greats, such as Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Michael Brecker. The trio shines in the “straight-ahead” style of jazz, which focuses on the connection of bass and drums, stylistic of 1930s and 40s jazz artists. The trio’s ultimate goal is to continue and expand upon the tradition of improvised jazz.

For Anat Fort, improvisation is a way of living; whether playing, composing or teaching her work is always inspired by the moment. A natural, life-long improviser, she discovered the depth of jazz in her teens. Coming to the US to study with Harold Mabern, Rufus Reid and Paul Bley, Anat developed the writing aspect of her creativity through the study of classical and jazz composition.
In December 2018 she received the prestigious Prime Minister Jazz Composers Award [Israel]; the first woman to ever win this prize.

The show will feature tracks from Friedman’s forthcoming third album including his most recent single, “Sun Never Sets,” which is based on his grandfather’s solo journey from Eastern Europe in 1907 at the age of 13. Friedman wrote the song in support of all immigrants past, present and future and is using it to raise awareness of groups that provide support to them.

It’s still there on Violet Avenue (Rt.9G) in Hyde Park, the place where it all began in the Summer of 1979. Kevin Becker and Gary Strait, two folk music performers, inspired by the liner notes of Peter, Paul and Mary’s In The Wind album, sought a spot for like-minded musicians in the Hudson Valley to gather and perform for themselves and others. He's been called "A rootless cosmopolitan and cultural radical who finds scraps of solace and inspiration down by the Roanoke River"--a wanderer from the Midwest, then the UK, and back to New Jersey, but now frimly rooted in Roanoke, where he lives a relatively normal life.

The first hour of the event is a guided warm-up and movement awareness workshop led by Ophra Wolf of Force & Flow, followed by free and open time and space for you to move or observe as you please starting at 3 PM and featuring live music with monthly guest musicians.
Kids of all ages are welcome to the jam portion with adult supervision, the workshop at the start is suitable for adults and teenagers.

 As a young child, Kazi Oliver tapped out rhythms on many a household item, including tables, counters, even a sister or two. When his mother discovered that a local after school program offered African drumming, Kazi was promptly directed to attend. Since these early beginnings, he has truly become the drummers' version of the Pied Piper, engaging children and adults in experiencing the energy and excitement of African drumming.
Kazi has been teaching for 45 years and performing for over 40 years. Professionally, Kazi has performed at the Village Vanguard, the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and on ABC-TV's "The View." Yet Kazi enjoys just as much, his appearances at community festivals, schools and events that bring together multi-generational and multicultural audiences to experience and enjoy the awesome power of the African drum.

Porch is the culmination of years of blood, sweat and tears. A native of central Pennsylvania, Rattie cut his teeth as the drummer for Vince Welnick (The Tubes: The Grateful Dead), and as drummer and prominent songwriter in The Rustlanders.

 Veteran musicians Joe Gil (trombone), Neil Alexander (organ and keyboards) and Nadav Snir-Zelniker (drums) have put together a new group called the "Thunderhead Organ Trio". The group is taking the concept of the organ trio in a new and different direction, drawing on many different influences and styles.
The group explores the grittier, rockier side of the genre referencing groups like the original Tony Williams Lifetime and mines the jazz standard repertoire for obscure gems and deep cuts.
The group will be playing original tunes, jazz standards, lost classics and rare gems.
